MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #42): Where we weigh up two smokin’ hawt chaebol hotelliers, one tortured by loss and the other crippled by abandonment issues

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here
but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

After seeing a clip on Insta just went straight in to first episode of Not Others on Viki and it was GREAT. Total filthy noona territory with 1000 Roses playing cop living with her very identifiable with mum (who was a high school student single mum). It's an 18, first episode featured daughter walking in on her mum having a wank and it's a hoot.

I love love love it already. It better stay good or I'm throwing things.

Dragonrock · 18/07/2023 08:28

polkettle - must have seen the same clip as I added it to my list. Might move it up the viewing list based on your comments. I am dropping in and out of random C-dramas at the moment as well.

I NEEEEEED episode 2 NAI!!!

Saram13 · 18/07/2023 18:56

AmVa ooooooh that's a GOOD look 🤩 Quite takes me back to the 90s! (= personal Leeds era 😁)

JinBhoot · 18/07/2023 18:57

@Dragonrock any Cdrama recommendations?
I have finished Hidden Love and I don’t know what am I going to do? Deema (Insta) is watching it and currently on ep7.
I have enjoyed watching it, only but I didn’t like was award ceremony in last episode. It was her achievement & it ended up with audience drooling over handsome BF.

Cdramas are massively improving (or I am getting better at picking them). I can easily recommend Find yourself & Hidden love

Dragonrock · 18/07/2023 19:08

JinBhoot - I enjoyed Love over Galaxy, Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace - both historical. Love in the Kitchen - a bit older man young woman trope but still amusing for me. I am dipping into The Outsider at the moment - women in business, rich boss but her making sure she is independent.

JinBhoot · 18/07/2023 19:16

I have seen Love over galaxy, FL’s mum was same one from Hidden Love. I will check out the rest.

At a very slow pace, I am watching two Jdramas, Map for the wedding (contract engagement/marriage) Prime & Lets get divorce Netflix.

Any recommendations on Prime?

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 18/07/2023 20:49

A whole week until the next episode of Not Others? This is BULLSHIT!

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 19/07/2023 19:28

Oh and another thing! Who is Netflix only releasing one episode a week of My Happy Marriage?

THIS IS VICTIMISATION I TELL THEE!

<throws more things>

Saram13 · 19/07/2023 21:55

TheLoup that is particularly goady timing 🙈😁

FedUp I have the extreme fortune to live within half an hour of several major music venues, plus have a whole network of chingus flagging interesting stuff to see. Two of the venues are cultural foundations rather than purely commercial operations, so are partially funded by various sponsorship/grant partnerships. So that keeps the prices down (I rarely pay more than 30 euros for a ticket, usually it's closer to 20). Otherwise I would not go so often 😬 This is partly why MrSaram is so horrified by big venue K-pop ticket prices - we're just not used to it. Though they probably better reflect the actual cost of touring.....

It's great, you are fortunate but also have a very keen eye for spotting cool gigs and new talent I think!!

FedUp why thank you [does a curtsy] 😁

And yes, I like the look of that creepy mask thing too [surprises nobody]

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 20/07/2023 12:01

I was going to look up the cast for that creepy mask thing but kinda don't want to spoil it?

Very Japanese vibes.

MigsandTiggs · 20/07/2023 14:08

I finished Hidden Love and now reflecting on how such a gentle show about a first love could have been so unputdownable. Well written, well directed and well acted. There was an innocence about the characters that you don't often see in k-dramas. Heartwarming!
