There She Goes Special 2023

'Rosie Yates is now 13 and is starting to display increasingly challenging emotional and physical behaviour, veering wildly from joyous obsessions with the letter X, tigers with Xs on their nose, ticket barriers and Fedex lorries to sudden violent outbursts directed at both her parents and herself.
The family realise that Rosie is simply struggling to cope with the onset of puberty, just like any other teenage girl. Whilst the family deal with a teenage Rosie, their geneticist calls with news of Rosie’s condition.'

I absolutely loved this episode. Agree the mums rant was so well done. All so well acted and written.

angelicaelizapeggy · 23/06/2023 11:29

Just finished watching this special. So glad they made it, was wonderful.

Loved the differing reactions from mum and dad re the diagnosis. Emily’s rant was just beautifully done. Reminded me a bit of the unhelpful ‘advice’ and criticism often dished out here by non-SEN parents. The frustration is real.

Loved the bit with the mum in the park telling Emily she’s doing a great job, after Rosie had pinched her little boy. Such a stark contrast to how that scenario would be discussed on MN- whenever extremely similar situations are discussed on here theres always rage towards the SEN child and the mum for not controlling their child, all the emphasis on the poor nt child and parent.

But especially loved the ending ❤️ so beautiful and emotional without sugarcoating anything 🥲

Sad that there probably won’t be anymore episodes!

Very true it's always your child,s disabilities don't trump he right of my child,s safety etc, with little understanding or nuance ,sometimes it feels like some posters want disabled children to kept away from society
Unless the child is Very sweet natured with no.challenging behaviour and can be " a learning experience " about inclusion .

I thought it was a lovely scene (and programme) but the point of it was surely that Em was expecting a different reaction based on previous experience.

Oh yes definitely, and I was expecting the mum to angrily confront Emily when she started walking over (which made the scene even better!)

It just made me think of threads on here where almost the exact scenario has been discussed and posters are up in arms about the violent SEN child, the mum who has been irresponsible by ‘allowing’ it to happen and not controlling their child enough, or else having the audacity to bring their child to a space where nt children are present. I love how putting that scene in the series really showed you the bigger picture around these sorts of events. The mum’s understanding and kindness made a difference to Emily in that moment.

I could talk.about this all day I think think the character of Ben was really well played and Simons reaction ,they are not a perfect family they are just trying to.deal.with the realities. Of a having a child with Rosie's. Need,s

JustDanceAddict · 25/06/2023 15:25

I loved the series and the special. Amazing acting from all concerned.

friedgoldeggs · 27/06/2023 19:43

@x2boys my daughter has the exact same microdeletion as your son, have you joined the Facebook group? There's quite a few of us on there now Smile

friedgoldeggs · 27/06/2023 19:47

And yes the series is wonderful, very true to life. I couldn't stop myself sobbing at some of the scenes in the flashbacks, it's what I've experienced and so many other parents who have disabled and complex children. Brilliant! I read the writer said they will only write a series if there's a story to tell. His daughter getting her real life diagnosis after many years was the reason he wrote the special in the first place. So here's hoping there may be more of Rosie and her family in the future! It was oddly comforting watching a family similar to ours on mainstream TV. Brilliantly done.

Hi i used to be on it but I didn't find it particularly helpful.th
I came off it a,few years ago so.it might have changed niow.

Somethingintheattic · 28/06/2023 16:37

This is a wonderful series. As an often exhausted Mum of a young person with SN I can really relate to Emily. When she ranted at Ben talking about how her life had been ruined and he sat and listened to all her frustrations - you never usually see that on the television and those feelings often go unspoken.

Globules · 28/06/2023 16:41

The mum in the park ❤️

I cried.

When watching, I vowed to be that person the next time I saw someone struggling.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/06/2023 13:10

Absolutely brilliant and enjoyed

So glad they found out Rosie's condition and the fact she found a friend and could
Communicate

I think I shed a tear

Dontjudgeme101 · 30/06/2023 20:05

The friend was the real.life writers disabled daughter who Rosie was based on ,and the father was Shaun Pye the writer
He said that they had one take to get it right because his daughter would decide how it would go
It summed it up..because my son would be the sane 😂

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/06/2023 21:10

@x2boys I think it went perfectly

I did read it was their daughter and real and not like Rosie who was acting

theoddoneasalways · 02/07/2023 11:03

I finally watched the one-off. So brilliantly done. And having the creators real family at the end was wonderful. Everyone involved in this should be so so proud of what they have done and how it will make countless families feel.

Willmafrockfit · 02/07/2023 11:08

also tearful at the end, especially when it was the writer and his daughter and family

doubtfulguest · 04/07/2023 11:39

Wonderful series and this special was superb. This was so brilliantly written and acted. I don't think I have ever laughed while crying so much.

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/07/2023 17:54

I've just watched and am still in tears after the last scene. Also the woman in the park. Miley Locke is such a brilliant young actress.

purpleme12 · 04/07/2023 18:02

She's so good isn't she

Isn't she just
She captures Rosie's behaviour in such a,realistic way its ,not.at all. patronising,I wonder is she spent time with Joey ( shaun pye,s daughter ) ?
I.did read initially they contemplated using a disabled actress but didn't v think they would be ab!e to take direction, and tbf,it would be unfair to.use an actress with Rosie's disabilities. In real.life

ArcaneWireless · 04/07/2023 22:05

It was just marvellous.

The mam in the park…

Paul2023 · 06/07/2023 21:24

I haven’t seen the hour long special but just binged watch series 1 and 2.
Can’t believe I missed it the first time around.
Such brilliant acting.

It really gave me an insight into what it’s like for families with severely disabled children and how everyone else should really show a little more patience and understanding.

Normal families who are just trying to lead a normal life as possible with a child who’s disabled or who has severe learning difficulties.
