Started a spoiler thread purely to discuss 'Loch Henry ' as I want to know what people thought of the ending. I was a bit confused , it was the mum who did the murders wasn't it ? Why did Davis look at the BAFTA award so oddly at the end ? Maybe I need to rewatch it.
I liked 'Joan is awful ' , but I had no idea who the main actress was , so I think some of that went over my head too.
Not seen the others.

The mum was involved along with his dad, I imagine that coloured how he viewed winning the Bafta along with losing his girlfriend. A bit of a hollow victory situation.

the80sweregreat · 17/06/2023 16:22

Ahh, I see.

I saw the twist in Loch Henry coming almost as soon as I saw how beige Davis' mother was. When I realised she was played by Monica Dolan, I knew she would be the killer. Dolan played Rose West in an ITV's Appropriate Adult, and there were quite a few parallels between some of the West's murders and those in Loch Henry.

it was the mum who did the murders wasn't it?
It was Davis' parents as well as a third man, Iain Adair. Once Adair was shot and killed, the bodies found, the murders stopped.

Why did Davis look at the BAFTA award so oddly at the end
Because he was still processing that his parents were living a double life and were sadist, voyeuristic murders.

marshamarshmallow · 17/06/2023 16:26

*murderers

And yes, a hollow victory - Davis won a Bafta and the price? His girlfriend's death and finding out his parents were sadist murderers.

Thanks
I wondered where I had seen the mum actress before ! She was good.

The BAFTA award is in the shape of a mask and his Mum was wearing a jaunty mask in the video and had hung in the wall at the house. That’s what I took from that scene.

the80sweregreat · 17/06/2023 16:43

The mask on the BAFTA made me start thinking that Davis had been involved too ! Which I know he wasn't going by these answers.

Definitely a comment on the true crime industry and the morbid fascination many people have - people do not always think of the victims and the families.

Davis and co started the documentary as they thought it would bring fame, wealth and tourists and whilst it did just that the price was very high for Davis.

Willmafrockfit · 17/06/2023 17:31

yes also came on to say about it being a MASK

Willmafrockfit · 17/06/2023 17:32

poor bloke

SocksAndTheCity · 17/06/2023 17:36

I thought of the Wests when the videos in the torture room were revealed, although I didn't recognise the actor and haven't seen the thing she was in. I don't like the true crime things either and didn't switch Netflix on for weeks at one point when the first thing that filled the screen was the Ted Bundy programme they made and then later the Jeffrey Dahmer one.

I thought the scene where they were all cheering in the pub watching the BAFTAs (with a handful wearing sparkly masks) was particularly horrifying, mostly because that's exactly what would happen.

the80sweregreat · 17/06/2023 18:00

I knew that the tapes she had would be significant, but was still surprised at the content
I did wonder if she would try and poison the girlfriend !

I figured that Davis's parents were the instigators of the murders and roped Iain in as he was disturbed and vulnerable and probably had SEN.

Allmyghosts · 17/06/2023 18:43

I thought it was really good and I agree with the sentiment. I used to like true crime but tbh grew tired of the fact 95% of victims seemed to be women. I view it less now through the lense of wtf was going on with the killer, but of innocent women brutalised and tortured. It's ghoulish and awful, especially the vapid women putting on make up whilst talking about some poor persons awful trauma on YouTube.

It kind of reminded me of Dear Zachary, a documentary started with one purpose, which then veered off course and was totally heartbreaking. I bet Charlie Brooker has seen that.

Yes, that's what I took from it too.

Mammyloveswine · 17/06/2023 21:29

Ive just watched Loch Henry and thoroughly enjoyed it! On to the astronaut one now!

ColdMeg · 17/06/2023 22:19

I took from the end of Loch Henry that he'd won the Bafta but at extraordinary cost. It was all a bit Monkey's Paw, be careful what you wish for.

I also got the impression that they still hadn't uncovered the whole truth of the story. The publican at the end was still grim and solitary, as though there was something else.

And the mum only selects a few of the Bergerac videos to put on the table. It makes you wonder what's on the rest.

It's probably worth a rewatch to pick up clues and hints you don't see the first time round.

For example, the dad comes out of hospital but dies "later", supposedly of MRSA, but he's cared for by the mum at home for a while. That seemed a bit odd, and I thought the son knew something was not quite right because the dad, we learn, apparently shot himself in the shoulder as a cover for killing Adair and his parents.

Demon79 - I'm going to watch this again but at the end they said 'They've done it' and it was alluded to earlier about the Russians?

GoneAway227 · 18/06/2023 23:16

I loved Loch Henry and Under The Sea, but thought Joan Is Awful was well... awful. One of my least favourite Black Mirror episodes.
The end of Under The Sea was fairly predictable but didn't stop it being heartbreaking. Great acting too.

the80sweregreat · 19/06/2023 06:28

I enjoyed Demon 79 as the whole 70s look was pretty well done and Gaap was funny.
Mazey Day was thought provoking.
Beyond the sea was strange , but the ending was just so sad.

Loved the first half of the season, tailed off from Beyond the Sea for me (still enjoyed). I think Joan is Awful was my favourite, so funny. Enjoyed the horror side of the season but missed some of the more sci fi/tech elements, could have had fun with Generative AI I think but appreciate that's only really hit the media in the last 6 months or so.

falsepositivenervous · 19/06/2023 11:20

I think Stuart's parents (the alcoholic dad who own the pub and deceased mother) were also in on it, considering how against the documentary the dad was, and how he essentially freaked when he saw that Stuart gave David the box of what his mum collected about it.

I haven't watched all other episodes, but I also really enjoyed demon 79 even though it wasn't very "black mirror".

glib · 19/06/2023 11:23

Yes I think that's why I am voting it down against the others even though I enjoyed, I love horror so could happily watch a series of episodes like that.

the80sweregreat · 19/06/2023 11:32

Gaap was horribly funny.
I preferred Demon 79 to the Joan episode

I think Beyond The Sea could have gone a few ways - I wondered whether more of the cult members would have come for Cliff's replica and family (maybe tipped off by the lady in the shop) and possibly arrive at a time when David was there. I daresay he'd have just let them get on with it. As a study of male violence I thought it was really well done.

I also wondered whether he would lock Cliff out in space even though it would be suicide, since he had nothing to go back for. Or whether Lana would decide she liked David better? I don't think it was too long, but I like a slow build up and I think it helped build the claustrophobia of their situation (I liked Jackie Brown better than Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs too 😊).

I thoroughly enjoyed Demon 79 in the end, too 😀
