New ITV drama about a woman doctor not only battling with the demands of saving lifes in A&E, but also having to manage junior doctors, hospital bureaucracy - and her own addiction.

I have seen 2.5 episodes and am finding the plot twists and details of A&E really interesting.

Let alone that the Health service has its own (possible) crime investigation service.

But then it is called Malpractice.

Have seen it compared to This is Going to Hurt, but it is miles better.

Apparently written by a woman who did work in A&E for some time.

I think how she manages to convey the complexity of providing health care really interesting.

Watched episode two today
I was cringing at her speech tbh , it wasn't a good move really.
Dodgy Doc and his wife were definitely up to no good

louderthan · 24/04/2023 22:02

I'm really enjoying it. Good to see from a female perspective.

the80sweregreat · 24/04/2023 22:06

It is good so far. Fast paced and good acting
Having sat for fifteen hours in a and e with Dh a few months ago , I can see how stressed they were and the hours they all work are insane.
I couldn't do their job

morelippy · 24/04/2023 22:23

Well I've just watched episode 3 and it's definitely warming up!

HappyHourStartsNow · 24/04/2023 23:53

I’m on episode 4 and I am becoming confused.

How much money is there to be made from prescribing to a relatively small amount addicts on an individual basis? And for it to be worth the risks to every professional involved, it can’t possibly be lucrative enough to tempt a couple who are heads of a pharmaceutical company and/ or GP and consultant couple, they are unlikely to be poor to start with anyway.

morelippy · 25/04/2023 07:54

Good point @HappyHourStartsNow

IwantToRetire · 25/04/2023 17:05

Have now finished watching as it was only 5 episodes.

Depressing conclusion that the only way doctors can survive the pressure of A&E is to be doped up.

I thought it really interesting in terms of how medical staff relate to each other, and the hospital bureaucracy they have to battle with.

And of course, never having heard the hospitals have to get rid of "waste" medicines that it opens up the opportunity for criminal fraud. (That's how you make money. Get drugs for free. Sell them at inflated prices to wealthy addicts.)

And so depressing to see the young boy who said he felt safer in the hospital at home, was in fact part of the gang running the fraud scheme, and obviously had to prove himself of being capable of violence.

I thought the little girl who played the daughter was amazing! I keep meaning to look up and see if she is related to either of the people playing her parents. She was so natural and relaxed. And then that shot of her sitting there slumped.

I thought it reallly good in terms of the plot, how the scenes were shot, and being brave enough to have the lead character not very likeable.

My only problem was I worked out who would be the bad apple in the hospital as the actor playing him is always wicked. When he was younger he was always the wicked seducer. Now he is older he is the wicked

Dh and I found it quite depressing especially as it didn't have a definite conclusion.
I'd like to think she did get some help in the end
I thought Oscar was the dodgy one.
It was good, but a tough watch at times as well

Grimeduster · 25/04/2023 21:13

I'm watching episode 2 and the scene where she restarts his heart is amazing, is that actually possible?

tallcypowder · 25/04/2023 21:17

The awards ceremony was ridiculous. So contrived.

Enjoyed the rest but would have preferred more aftermath is she got help etc.

the80sweregreat · 25/04/2023 21:18

I've seen the same cardiac procedure on ' Holby city ' once. Years ago now.
I ( assume) it can be done in real life. I just hope I never have to find out ( or anyone I know)

Of he’s still the wicked seducer. Doing a very good job in Marie Antoinette of playing the old randy goat Louis XV.

I don’t think she is related to either of them but they are a couple in RL. So with them knowing eachother so well it was probably a calm environment as I presume, I don’t think they have children, that they are used to dealing with children as a couple with friends and family. They family scenes were very very natural. He prticularly was amazing with the little girl and I presume he is the main caregiver given her career. She shouts it at him at one point.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/04/2023 00:04

I binged it and really enjoyed it even though most of it was utter nonsense.Made very good telly though.

She probably does. She has a supportive husband and really I see her just giving the career up which is the sad point. Because she was good. But that’s what happens in the public service. You hit rock bottom and when you get there you decide how and what you can handle and for a lot people it’s walking away.

Of course, forgot that. Very convincing performance!

would have preferred more aftermath if she got help

I thought she agreed to get help right at the end. But also said the only way she good cope with the pressure of the job was to be on drugs.

Maybe I misremembered.

No one hats what happened. I think she’s done with the job. He was pleading with her to consider her other identities with the people that needed her. Career with the NYU maybe.

Quote from a newspaper:

Abi is played by Liberty Miller, who appears to be new to the world of TV as not much is known about her at this time.

Only up to episode 2 so won't read above too carefully yet.

It was mentioned on the TV pace thread but the prescription drug misuse reminds me of Happy Valley.

@IwantToRetire so far I liked This is Going to Hurt better (and Bodies even better, if anyone's seen that). But I'm interested enough to keep watching Malpractice.

I'm wondering if I will come back to liking the main character more again as she finds out what the GP and clinic were up to. I like the actress.

the80sweregreat · 26/04/2023 14:34

The actress has a lovely accent.
I do like hearing a different accent on tv

Grimeduster · 26/04/2023 21:02

I just read today that the actor playing her husband is her husband in real life.

TheChosenTwo · 26/04/2023 22:57

Just finished this, was really intrigued as to how it would end. From about episode 3 though I don’t understand why the police weren’t called there and then!

TheChosenTwo · 26/04/2023 22:58

The MIU people were like amateur sleuths obtaining phone records and handwriting samples. Bit crazy.
I also couldn’t quite piece together a time frame for anything. Overall though I did like it.

morelippy · 26/04/2023 23:13

Entertaining but really utterly unrealistic.

Not a patch on Maternal imo

OneFrenchEgg · 26/04/2023 23:14

At the end would she not have had a police guard?
