In bed with a nasty bout of Covid so have given myself permission to binge 😂

Loved Kerri Russell in the Americans so fingers crossed. Rufus Sewell as the Husband also great casting.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I thought it was awful. Terrible dialogue and some bad acting from actors I usually like. I also hated her character - I'm sorry, but you don't rise through the diplomatic service high enough to be given a major ambassadorship and be under consideration for the vice presidency while loudly proclaiming and displaying your disdain for social graces. The scene where she takes off her gown and lies on the steps of Winfield House did it for me. Verging on manic pixie dream ambassador.

Yes, quite 🙄

Totalwasteofpaper · 24/04/2023 14:17

@Wallaw
100% yes.
I got to that bit and was like wtaf? Why am i bothering... and gave up

species5618 · 24/04/2023 14:36

I hope there is a second series as that was the most annoying cliff-hanger ever.

Annasgirl · 24/04/2023 15:18

I binge watched at the weekend. I loved it, even if it was a bit OTT.

at the start I liked Hal (he’s beautiful) but I agree with @Viewer23 - he’s a total narcissist.

I was shocked at the ending . I also wonder how they are going to progress - I mean she either stays as a diplomat or she takes the VP job, in which case she is no longer a diplomat. I think that was the one clanger in the plot - if the programme is a success you can’t string it out for 9 seasons if she becomes the VP - or you can but it goes downhill like the ok at the start but then dire ‘Madam Secretary’.

tribpot · 24/04/2023 16:58

Right, I've finished as well! Shall I start a spoiler thread?

Viewer23 · 24/04/2023 18:24

Yes please!

tribpot · 24/04/2023 18:27

Spoiler thread here:

tribpot · 24/04/2023 18:28

Oh man. Mumsnet even blocking links to their own site??

Spoiler thread is here or you may need to go to the Telly Addicts section and look for it.

I thought it was dreadful and tried too hard to make her a hot mess. I was disappointed that the fabulous Pearl Mackie (Bill Potts in Doctor Who) had such a tiny role. Even the brilliant Rory Kinear couldn't save it for me.

BrandNewBicep · 25/04/2023 20:44

I've just switched it off midway through ep.3 - awful.

Yes, I'm afraid I didn't make it past episode 2.

Watched about 5 so far, will keep going as DH is laughing along and enjoying it. I think it’s ok, I don’t like the lead female which is a big stumbling block. Script is witty but it’s all too ridiculous and farcical in places. Enjoying Rufus Sewell but that’s in spite of everything.

I had read several reviews likening it to The West Wing. It is not fit to clean West Wings shoes.

The Ambassador’s black cross body bag is very smart, anyone know the brand?

I'm also glad to see I'm not the only one who couldn't get into this. Normally I have a 'two episode rule' with Netflix, whereby I give a series two episodes to decide if I want to continue with it or not. I gave this a 3rd because it got such rave reviews but have given up on it now. The dialogue was trying so hard to be witty and clever but it just seemed stilted and a bit cringey to me.

I agree that someone who rose so high in American political life would no way be so indiscreet. She'd also be much more ruthless. You just don't get anywhere near that level without being hard as nails.

Rufus is very lovely however. But I prefer him with his own accent.

Willmafrockfit · 27/04/2023 12:45

i have seen three but am seriously contemplating whether i should bother finishing it
it is so manic
so odd the situation with Rufus
so cringy

LemonSoap1 · 27/04/2023 21:10

Just finished watching it, agree it’s cringey edging towards dire. Waste of Rufus S.

KimberleyClark · 29/04/2023 21:06

Couldn’t get over how awful Kate’s hair looked most of the time. Really needed a wash and a trim.

CatherineCawoodsScarf · 29/04/2023 21:19

I enjoyed it, though it tried to be too many things. A bit Veep, a bit West Wing, a little of Homeland. And the ‘woman’ stuff was just cringe. Like they’d never had a woman sit at a table before FFS. It reminded me of Inventing Anna where the journalist was the first woman to have given birth and got a male colleague to rub her back.

Especially when you consider the hair of her Felicity days!

I'm up to ep 6 and it's a bit silly but I'm enjoying it overall. Rufus Sewell is always welcome though it's a bit strange to hear him with an American accent and David Gyasi is 🔥 !

hopeishere · 30/04/2023 08:54

I though it was ok. I hated how they made her "quirky" the messy hair and the eating and the "witty" banter. The odd English assistant in the house and the other one in the bow tie jarred with the drama.

She was very unprofessional at times - having a fistfight with your husband during a presidential visit - yeah right.

Rufus Sewell looked very odd as well. He's fixed his eye but his eyebrows were very dark.

It felt like it was trying to be be witty and dramatic but never got both bits in sync.

GinAllAround · 30/04/2023 09:11

The bow tie staffer! The actor is non-binary apparently, but I don't know why they took inspiration from Pee Wee Herman.

Was that done to show how disdainful of fashion and fripperies she was?

hopeishere · 30/04/2023 10:54

I definitely think the messy hair was characterisation. But it was a bit obvious.

2Rebecca · 30/04/2023 22:16

On episode 2 and it's yet another Netflix series with a constantly overemotional female lead.

Men are allowed to be cool and cynical, powerful women have to be constantly in a tizz
