Is anyone watching this? I couldn't see another thread. It's shocking how the family seemed to be able to stop the earlier murders being investigated due to being powerful/wealthy and having the right connections

I’m watching the trial , Alex Murdaugh is being cross examined atm live!

QuillBill · 23/02/2023 21:24

I'm also watching the trial and listening to Pretty Little Lies and Alibis. I've seen the HBO documentary which might be the same as the Netflix one. It was really good.

The podcast The Murdaugh Murders is excellent. It started long before Alex Murdaugh was arrested. Mandy Matney is the host

The BBC seem to have started covering the trial today.

This podcast is excellent, it’s over the course of 4 years so keeps updating

I was wondering if Alex's father knew about the fraud and murders/drunk boating/grandson expelled from Uni etc but it seems he died 3 days after Paul and Maggie were murdered so they may have been able to keep it from him.

I definitely think Gloria was murdered as well. Poor woman.
Such a corrupt family

Catmuffin · 24/02/2023 01:57

Yes it's a disgrace. I hope Gloria and Stephen Smith's families get justice.

im ill in bed feeling dreadful with covid. Just put this on Netflix.

NutellaEllaElla · 24/02/2023 06:17

Hello, I just watched this and can't believe how corrupt that town is! Thanks for the podcast recommendation. There's like 80 episodes and the trial is obviously current. I'm tempted to skip straight to the trial episodes.

Doublevodka · 24/02/2023 07:40

Does anyone have a link for the podcast please?

Catmuffin · 24/02/2023 08:29

I missed why Buster and John Marvin were trying to spend money in Las Vegas. Does anyone know?

I'm watching the live trial. If anyone enjoys legal commentary, I highly recommend Emily D Baker on YouTube - she used to be a district attorney and talks through the legal stuff as it's happening, and it's so interesting.

The case itself is almost unbelievable and complicated. I don't think he'll be found guilty at this point, but who knows what will happen!

Crimsonripple · 24/02/2023 19:09

I watched the documentary today. Slight off piste but anyone else think one reason Morgan was with Paul because of the status of his name? I can't see in any other circumstances why she would be with him!

Crimsonripple · 24/02/2023 20:51

Also watching the live trial, why isn't someone else helping find the footage that is played in court? The chap is constantly faffing about with it.

I got the impression that they were the popular crowd at school who were either beautiful or rich

They said Paul was fun and funny when he was in a good mood which she probably was attracted to initially as well as the wealth and lifestyle. He was obviously abusive though and she lived for his good moods but was trying to leave because of the abusive bits.

I have followed this since Mallory Beach was killed in the boating accident( we were holidaying in the Beaufort area at the time) and Paul Murdagh was charged with three felony counts. I remember thinking what a horrible family they were, trying to blame others and coercing witnesses.

Then it started to resemble a crime movie plot, mother and son murdered, failed suicide attempt, embezzlement, drug addiction, and then other deaths connected with the Murdaghs re investigated.

The Deep South 'good ol' boys' aspect of this case is very worrying, the Murdaghs have been very big fish in their little pond for decades and their name carried a lot of weight.

I hope justice will prevail.

Catmuffin · 25/02/2023 18:58

The absolute brass neck of Alex thinking he could get away with saying Connor drove the boat when there were that many witnesses on the boat!
Is it common for there to be untouchable families in the South? Obviously that is an extreme case and there were only so many deaths they could get away with, but to a lesser extent?

Perhaps but he wasn't exactly an Adonis. And she was really pretty. She didn't come from an affluent family so I do think the power and wealth paid a part to his attraction.

I think that type of power and bribery happens everywhere but probably more prevalent in those back water type of communities. Money goes a long way and most of the time they have or at least someone in law enforcement in their pocket.

Haven't watched any of the trial today. I was watching a live feed yesterday on you tube. Other than the snap chat record they have no strong evidence to convict him of the killings. It seems so likely that he did it - probably in some sort of drugged up paranoid state that they were going to stop his drugs or discover his fraud. What a sad sad ending!

PuppyMonkey · 25/02/2023 21:42

Did I understand it right - not one official police or etc ever made contact with Mallory’s parents? They heard about her being missing and presumed drowned from friends parents?
