2023’s final trilogy of films will find Endeavour and Thursday entering a new era of change both professionally and personally.

Set in the spring of 1972, the final season’s opening episode is directed by none other than Endeavour star Shaun Evans.

The synopsis for the story reads: “Two unexplained deaths turn up ties to the Oxford Concert Orchestra, while a body discovered in a derelict warehouse stokes fears that ‘London business’ has yet again found its way to Oxford.

“Thursday and Endeavour’s investigation unearths some unsettling connections to cases the duo believed were well and truly behind them.”

Loved all of it except - the previous programme had overrun and the recording cut off before the last two minutes of the last Endeavour....

Oh no! Unless I'm trying to record something else immediately either side, I always add a minute before and a couple of minutes afterwards to reduce the risk of that happening. It's not always foolproof, especially if the sport overruns, but I've lost count of the number of times doing that has saved my bacon. At least these days you can still catch the end online.

Maybe Morse TV series appealed to those who read the books originally? Which, tbh were quite "high brow" and had lots of very specific Oxford college Classic/Greats allusions?

JaneJeffer · 14/03/2023 00:15

I read a couple @Feministwoman they're really not that highbrow

Feministwoman · 14/03/2023 00:16

And very specific "Town and Gown" Oxford allusions, so quite appealing if you'd gone to an Oxford College

Feministwoman · 14/03/2023 00:17

Disclaimer.
I didn't go to Oxford.
My husband did.

I've read them all.

Imo, yes they are

Compared with similar period books.

Nearest are PDJames

Feministwoman · 14/03/2023 00:24

If anyone wants similar, The Dauglish novels, by PD James, are fabulous.
And for an American slant, Sue Grafton The Alphabet series are amazing

ILikeDifficultSums · 14/03/2023 01:20

PD James’s Adam Dalgleish novels.

They have been televised. The first ones on ITV had Roy Marsden as Dalgleish and more recent ones on Ch 5 featured Bertie Carvel.

The Roy Marsden ones are quite often repeated on ITV3 or ITV2. In my opinion they are not as multi-layered as Endeavour, but I still found them worth watching.

HilaryThorpe · 14/03/2023 06:08

We had the Roy Marsden Dalgliesh on DVD, but found them unwatchable a second time as they were so slow.... Endless shots of cars driving around Norfolk. I also have the early Endeavours on DVD, but because we are in France Amazon sent us the Dutch version and I have to work out how to get rid of ondertitelen every time. 😂
I did finally see the last two minutes of the last episode as it was in the documentary. 😊

I enjoyed the Morse novels, but the television series was darker and more intriguing. In the first book, Morse is nothing like the interesting melancholy John Thaw character. He's eyeing up the barmaid in a pub and joking with Lewis! Then Colin Dexter started writing the later novels to fit in with John Thaw's interpretation, and even started to include the tetchy " Lew-is!"

Love Den Of Geek and their spin off articles

Loved it. Such great actors. Would love a Thursday spinoff.

duc748 · 14/03/2023 10:48

Thanks for that, @Lalgarh !

If you love Roger Allam he is fantastic in Cabin Pressure on Radio 4. You can download it on Audible. I always listen to it while flying!

I liked that the silhouette of Endeavour mirrored the silhouette of Morse at the end of the first Morse episode. I also liked the change near the end to close ups of faces, especially when Endeavour said 'Is that all' to the conductor, very much in the filming style of Morse with lots of close ups. Made a nice visual transition.

Yes they are. They’re beautifully written

re the money Thursday gave to his brother. I am wondering if in fact originally it was just a straightforward "loan" but then as they seemed intent on bringing in as many characters as possible from previous episodes, they just added this bit about it being to get Thursday watchful of being exposed. Originally this didn't really came up. It was much more about the impact on Win. (We should have had more Win!)

And I wonder whether the Joan Endeavour sage never came to anything because it would have impacted the relationship between Thursday and Morse, the actual love story of the series.

They could see easliy have had them having some sort of affair and then Joan thinking I dont want the life my mum had, or more likely Endeavour thinking I dont want the domesticated cage of the Thursday. They tried to make out the Endeavour was envious of the Thursday household in the fan documentary, but as Morse made clear in the origianl series he totally despised the life Lewis had with Val, fish fingers for tea, caring for children. And he let Lewis know. Or retrospectively you could argue this was just his bitterness and never setting up home with Joan!

re. the bikers - if Endeavour didn't tip them off then how miraculously fortunate that they turned up just in time to stop him getting kicked to death. He certainly seemed to be expecting them, pointing out that they were in the woods.

I was never a big Morse fan, and haven't watched that much of them, but my recollection is that Morse was continually patronising and rude to young Robbie, especially at first. Is that fair? Still find it hard to see that in Endeavour.

Lalgarh · 14/03/2023 17:13

Endeavour had the start of that with his mentoring of George Fancy

WolfFoxHare · 14/03/2023 17:13

I don’t think I’ve watched many episodes of Morse - I was a bit young when it was on tv originally. Maybe one or two in the later 90s. I got into the Morseverse via Lewis, which I liked and Endeavour which I adored. I’m going to have to watch Morse once I’ve finished my Endeavour binge, but I’m worried I’ll find him disappointingly curmudgeonly!

I'm watching again from series 1 but haven't got to the bit about the loan yet. I shall pay particular attention this time. Originally I just saw it as causing a rift between Fred and Win without any further repercussions. In fact, I will pay more attention to a lot of things and then watch the finale. Then I'll watch Morse.

RaraRachael · 14/03/2023 17:24

I loved the Morse programmes but tried to read one of the books and gave up.

Funny how everybody has different tastes and interpretations of things.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 14/03/2023 17:27

I caught an early episode of Morse recently. The one featuring a very young Liz Hurley, set in a girls' school. Morse is a bit pervy over the girls in their hockey skirts. That wouldn't fly in 2023!

diddl · 14/03/2023 17:36

In some ways I think it's a shame that Joan & Strange married as it puts a connection between Morse & Strange that isn't there.
