MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #39): February sees the Filthy Noonas warmed by the smouldering embers of Jin’s leather trousers

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

RM has posted pics of himself in Barcelona and the last shows him with a woman. Is this a big reveal or is she his sister?

polkettle · 06/03/2023 12:57

Twitter has answered my question - hols with his mum and sister. V wholesome. As are Dong Hwi and Hooyeon currently in Paris and Disneyland and posting French hotel cat pics.

TheLoupGarou · 06/03/2023 13:29

Those pics made me want a Barcelona city break!

Rowdythree · 06/03/2023 13:39

Park Shin Hye is also in London, it seems there's a mass idol exodus from Korea!

Inexplicably none of them seem to to have Belfast on their European itinerary 🤣

Does anybody use HiTV to watch kdrama at all? There are a couple of dramas on there I haven't seen elsewhere, but I don't want to use it if it's not safe.

Polkettle Suspicious Partner is my absolute favourite, I hope you enjoy it.

TheLoupGarou · 06/03/2023 20:59

I like Suspicious Partner a lot as well 🙂 Enjoy pol

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 06/03/2023 22:03

I'm up to date on Call it Love. It's a slow burner, got the same melancholy as MLN. Definitely cut form the same cloth!

polkettle · 07/03/2023 06:27

Very much enjoying uri Wookie in rumpled lawyer mode.
I've used HiTV Metheven with no problems. Minimal and non offensive ads. I mean it's got to be illegal given content but it's very useful! Watched lovely 18 Again on it recently.

bettys · 07/03/2023 08:27

Dammit I clicked on HiTV to try & find 18 Again as recommended by polkettle only to spot Moon Lovers which I haven't watched for aaaaaages. Bang goes my productive morning.....

Saram13 · 07/03/2023 10:04

Documentary on alleged (historic) abuse in the J-pop world. BBC2, 21.00 tonight.

Bea · 07/03/2023 15:32

HiTv fine... i've watched now and again...😁

Metheven · 07/03/2023 15:36

Thanks polkettle and Bea I shall definitely look at HiTv, I want to watch Scholar Who Walks The Night and that was the only place I could find it.

polkettle rumpled lawyer mode Wookie is just lovely, as is every other Wookie mode 😂

Anyone seen Zombie Detective and care to advise on level of violence/gore/scare for friend who is looking for funny zombies for his 13 year old?

I have, I'd say it would be classed as funny zombies. There's lots of Choi Jin-hyuk with no top on, but it's so we can see the zombie make up properly 😉. There's lots of silly slap stick as well as some gross zombie stuff.

polkettle · 07/03/2023 19:10

Excellent! Thanks TheGirl
I have started yet another endless identikit CDrama. I need an intervention.

The temptation to reconcile and let bygones be bygones must be huge when your sibling is global superstar and can bankroll long haul holidays for the fam. 😉😂

I had a Korean corndog today, one of the half beef/half cheese ones. The opportunity presented itself so it had to be done. It was pretty good and I’d definitely repeat the experience. I’m still a bit perplexed by the cinnamon sugar dusting under the ketchup and mustard drizzle, but it otherwise lived up to my expectations.

This article is interesting. Look at how low acceptance of homosexuality is in South Korea compared to England, Wales and Scotland in the chart. I can’t work out if there’s so much BL/gay content on Viki, bato etc because gay relationships are not represented in their mainstream/legacy media. It seems there is a huge market for it.

Britain now one of the world’s most liberal nations.

That's a very interesting article boaty - that 3% figure for SK is so low. I wonder what the sample size was? I'm sure repressed desires must work their way out in all kinds of social/cultural phenomena.

Also noted NI behind the rest of the UK in terms of social liberalism 🙄 this rings true today as a work colleague was telling me about some of the awful homophobic bullying her teenager is experiencing - stuff that would have been socially unacceptable amongst my peer group when I was a teenager nearly bloody 30 years ago. Progress is slow I guess

MigsandTiggs · 07/03/2023 22:42

That BBC2 J-pop sexual abuse documentary about Johnny @ Associates in Japan was an eye opener. I had to keep mumbling to myself "cultural differences, cultural differences". The accepting attitude of the few men they managed to speak to was heartbreaking, yet I could understand the transactional acceptance of the victims, who often came from poor families.

Is the political attempt to increase the age of consent from 13 the start of some tangible change? I fear that the answer is NO because in Japan the pressure to conform means that you neither challenge your superiors nor disagree with others. FFS (sorry again, I've been watching Chris Rock on Netflix) men couldn't legally be raped until after the 1907 law was amended c2017.
