Why would you put yourself forward for a TV quiz show when your general knowledge is APPALLING?

When you confidently proclaim that you know about geography/rivers then think that the Thames runs through Cambridge? Or when you think that out of "feline/cat" and "alpine/alpaca", that Alpaca is correct? Or that alkaline refers to frogs, and guillotine to gulls?

Fuck me. The producers are clearly testing people, discarding those of average intelligence or above in order to keep the budget down.

And the next superstar contestant in the team thinks that Oliver Twist was published after 1955.

Don’t think they’re going to win the money somehow!

FeltCarrot · 10/02/2023 17:13

Blimey! I stand corrected!

HufflepuffRavenclaw · 10/02/2023 17:14

A whole £500 between 4 of them.

I don't know how Ross Kemp keeps his enthusiasm up.

GlassBunion · 10/02/2023 17:22

I'm not watching tonight's episode but I've found myself shouting at the screen, before now, at how some people just don't know the very simplest of things.

I've had to stop watching Tipping Point because it's become so very embarrassing.
There was , notoriously, the question about Homer regarding which was the food of the gods... the contestants thought that the question was about Homer Simpson and answered along the lines of hot dogs or some such. Even Ben Shepherd seemed aghast.

Thinking of the paycheck, probably. They film it in Glasgow I think, we've been to see recordings of quiz shows there before and they rattle through them, 4 or 5 shows a day easy.

Hahaha

Im addicted to this show!

Thought the smug arse a estate agents who thought they were super clever but actually were terrible was very enjoyable.

Cant stand Ross Kemp. What a pompous, rude self indulgent twat. Every round he says something “That’s MY favourite drink!”. No one cares Grant!

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 16/02/2023 09:11

The estate agents kept banging on about “he’s the boss hahaha” - a 19yo who had to think if there was a million millimetres in a metre 🙄

Maireas · 16/02/2023 09:13

Those estate agents!!
"I just chose names I thought would go with Sir"
Dear lord. I did like Ross Kemp telling that man "Agatha Christie is the best selling author ever" when he'd clearly never heard of the works and thought she wrote "The Thursday Murder Club".
The celebrity ones are ok.

That made me laugh so much!
No wonder properties are so misrepresented!

The celeb one with Christian from Eastenders and other soap actors was excellent!

The chances of 4 categories where NO ONE had any knowledge is astounding, and the OP has it spot on about the bafflement of going on when no one has good general knowledge.

Maireas · 16/02/2023 10:22

I think you have to have some basic knowledge but also use process of elimination. Some get the idea that you can go back to obvious ones to clock up some money. Although there are some who just seem clueless.

QuietlyConfident · 16/02/2023 10:26

This is particularly obvious on Pointless, because the clueless contestants are then confronted with the fact that the things they didn't know were scoring 50/60/70 percent, so they're demonstrably less well-informed than the average person. Haven't watched Bridge of Lies but it sounds like a shocker.

Jojoanna · 16/02/2023 10:29

The estate agents were hilarious ! They didn't know much

Maireas · 16/02/2023 10:30

Pointless doesn't seem as bad, you often seem to get decent contestants. Plus people know that the periodic table comes up, so that's usually done ok.
This one actually gives you options.

HufflepuffRavenclaw · 16/02/2023 13:53

There was a funny look to camera from Ross yesterday when the numpty man was umming and aahhhing over whether "Murder on the Orient Express" was by Agatha Christie.

Money's better on Pointless. People regularly win £5k plus and split it two ways. Lots of people on there who should be well educated like students, lawyers, doctors.

Bridge of lies is lower prize money, split 4 ways.

I understand that not everyone has a good level of general knowledge. But WHY put yourself forward for a TV quiz show in that case? It'd be like me applying to go on Landscape Artist of the Year and turning up with a paint by numbers.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/02/2023 14:17

I saw that Bridge of Lies episode yesterday, open-mouthed. I've only ever seen the last few minutes before if I switch on early for Pointless. The estate agents proudly announced at the start that none of them read books, so were aghast that one round was about books! As mentioned above, it wasn't as if they were being asked who wrote the Iliad or Paradise Lost or anything even vaguely intellectual - the luckless man they sent to do that round just had to know if book titles were by Agatha Christie or not. I knew we were in for something special when he looked at The Girl on the Train and Murder on the Orient Express and hadn't a clue which one was the Christie novel. As he moved forward, more by luck than judgement, he got to the nursery rhyme titles and said he knew they couldn't be by Agatha Christie because he'd read those to his little boy. Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

The young woman trying to guess who might be a knight of the realm was good value too. She hesitated a long time over Donald Trump and I think she'd heard of very few of the names she was picking between - obscure nonentities like Ian McKellen, Paul McCartney, Alan Sugar and Michael Caine. Hmm

Best bit by far, though, was the final question - 'Japan has a larger land area than China' - truth or lie? By this stage, I imagine it was all getting a bit embarrassing so the last numpty standing just said 'Truth' to make it all come to an end.

Nice cheap show for the BBC if they've deliberately picked contestants who won't win any money!

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 16/02/2023 14:44

Yes the EAs were really arrogant werent they!

I apply for game shows (never been selected 😭) as I LOVE game shows, gonna see how to apply for Bridge of Lies, at least I have heard of Agatha Christie 🤪

JustDanceAddict · 16/02/2023 14:57

I’ve watched a few episodes and I always end up shouting at the TV!!
dh reckons people go on it for ‘fame’ as the money is so crap and they’re all thick.

Maireas · 16/02/2023 16:08

Exactly! @HufflepuffRavenclaw
The landscape artist comparison is a good one! Oh dear, the "which has a bigger land area, China or Japan?" and settling on Japan was just 🙄

Cleebope2 · 16/02/2023 16:20

I think if you are on these shows your mind can go blank. But thinking Kate Bush had a number 1 hit withJane Eyre is hilarious. I feel ridiculously clever when I watch this show. But some of the final questions are very obscure. Young people’s general knowledge is awful these days.

Some young people's general knowledge is awful, but there are plenty of extremely clever and knowledgeable young people on University Challenge and Only Connect. There are also lots of older people on quiz shows who also either know very little or freeze up from nerves.
