And looks like we finally have The Gold On for next Sunday

Been waiting for this

Seen ads. Looks great

So the loss of hv gains something good on a Sunday night - well hopefully

Based on a true life story

The drama explores one of the most remarkable true crime cases and its impact on the world after the event. Taking place on 26th November 1983, six armed men broke into the Brink’s-Mat security depot near London’s Heathrow Airport.

What was supposed to be a 'routine' armed robbery, actually ended up being one of the seminal events of British criminal history because the six men inadvertently stumbled across gold bullion worth £26m.

Known as the "Brink's-Mat robbery" or the "Brink's-Mat bullion heist", the largest gold heist in British history happened on 26th November 1983, like in The Gold.

At most, the gang of south London criminals thought that they would come away from the robbery with £3 million. But in reality, they actually ended up finding £26 million worth of gold bars, uncut diamonds and cash.

After the event proved even more wild, with the gang having to onboard the help of an expert jeweller to dispose of the gold, counterfeit stolen gold bars, the collapse of Johnson Matthey Bankers (where the bullion was stolen from) and the so-called "curse", which refers to the fact that several of those involved were shot and killed.

It was just supposed to be "a typical Old Kent Road armed robbery", according to detectives at the time. But it soon went on to be a massively remarkable event, not only due to the scale of the theft – at the time, the biggest in global history – but for its wider legacy.

The cast for The Gold is a star-studded one, to say the least. It's written by Neil Forsyth (Eric, Ernie & Me) and directed by Academy Award-winning Aneil Karia (The Long Goodbye) along with Lawrence Gough (The Last Bus, Snatch, Misfits).

The cast is led by Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey (www.radiotimes.com/going-out/best-downton-abbey-tours-uk/)) as Brian Boyce, Jack Lowden (Small Axe (www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/small-axe-release-date-cast-trailer-bbc/): Mangrove) also stars as Kenneth Noye, Dominic Cooper (The Preacher) as Edwyn Cooper, Charlotte Spencer (The Duke) as Nicki Jennings, Tom Cullen (Becoming Elizabeth) as John Palmer and Emun Elliott (Guilt (www.radiotimes.com/programme/b-6qlfuh/guilt/)
, Old) as Tony Brightwell.

The cast also includes Sean Harris (Southcliffe), Ellora Torchia (Ali and Ava) and Stefanie Martini (
Prime Suspect (www.radiotimes.com/programme/b-jtsagk/prime-suspect/)
) in the real-life drama.

Did anyone feel that Boyce was very misguided in sending Fordham in unarmed? Even if they thought Noye was just a fence?

So odd to see police apparently weaponless, fences with dogs, knives and guns!

nicetoseetgesunsout · 02/04/2023 16:26

Just an update... I saw my BIL yesterday and we were talking about this programme.
BIL saw Kenneth Noye in his local last Sunday. Dreadful how he can walk freely now locally. Seemingly Untouchable.
This is a semi rural pub in Kent.
Awful that he's raking in money from his book. Who buys this rubbish and further funds him?
Locals Feel so much for his innocent victims.
My Dad (80) asked my BIL if he said anything to KN. BIL said 'no, I didn't want to risk being stabbed' - this was in the pub my BIL has been a regular in (only ever two pints and only ever on a Sunday early evening) for over 20 years.
I wonder if it's going to be KN's new local and they take over what is a regular, nice, community pub with a tea room and garden? Bloody hope not. That's what happens though.

nicetoseetgesunsout · 02/04/2023 16:44

BTW I still haven't watched it. I probably won't.
I know the story and just a bit concerned that KN is in my area and drinking at the local like he's a normal person. No one I know would ever confront him.
Just hope my BIL and his friends don't get managed out of the pub that they've had their peaceful Sunday get together for several years.

Meanwhile, KN makes money.

@Goldpaw "....I'm almost always put off by people moaning and groaning between the sheets because it seldom adds to the plot."

Me too.
I record most things and skip the bed bits.
But then there can be post coital mutterings and I've to go back to hear what was said. 🙄

Finished episode 4 and really glad I stuck with it. It's a great show with a brilliant cast and I love shows from a time before mobile phones had taken over the world.

Did anyone find the actors who play the Cooper and Noye characters had an amazing screen presence and charisma about them? Like a simmering, barely contained fizz of energy.

Also have a girl crush on DI Jennings! Love a strong female lead and her smile lights up the room. I want to be her when I grow up. (I'm 41).

@Blondeshavemorefun
Did you watch, and did you do a thread early last year for The Curse?

It’s a Ch4 comedy crime drama based on the robbery, which is returning for a second series starting next week.

First series is on All4.

One of the stars is Emer Kenny who’s just been on the radio. She says all the cast contribute to the writing.

Just thought I’d mention it.

Yes, I understand this is a tv pace thread, so I avoided making any reference to the content (unlike others). I meant I was surprised at the number of people who said it was boring and slow. So I expected a greater level of love, not necessarily more of it.

I couldn’t get into it first time and stopped after e1 I think

I watched e1 again last night and enjoyed it more

guess I wasn’t in the right mood last time

Jack Lowden was on Graham Norton chatting about it and saying he never gets to use his Scottish accent in anything.

He's a very good actor, but he always seems slightly stilted to me, which I'm sure is just because he's concentrating on doing an accent as well as acting. He's actually quite good at accents, I think, though.

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2023 09:36

I liked the main lady detective , although it wasn't fair she could wear trousers and warm clothes whilst part of the police uniform for the women was a skirt ! I don't know when that changed , but so unfair back then. Must have been hard chasing criminals around
I remember Kenneth Noye on the news and how violent he was.

My main issue with this programme is that, much as I enjoy watching Jack Lowden, I think he's inherently very likable as an actor, which makes Kenneth Noye more likable he should be.

Bobbieiris · 03/06/2025 20:39

Is this the second series?! I absolutely loved this!! One of the best series I’ve watched in a while

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/06/2025 20:54

Yes second series starts this week x
