And looks like we finally have The Gold On for next Sunday

Been waiting for this

Seen ads. Looks great

So the loss of hv gains something good on a Sunday night - well hopefully

Based on a true life story

The drama explores one of the most remarkable true crime cases and its impact on the world after the event. Taking place on 26th November 1983, six armed men broke into the Brink’s-Mat security depot near London’s Heathrow Airport.

What was supposed to be a 'routine' armed robbery, actually ended up being one of the seminal events of British criminal history because the six men inadvertently stumbled across gold bullion worth £26m.

Known as the "Brink's-Mat robbery" or the "Brink's-Mat bullion heist", the largest gold heist in British history happened on 26th November 1983, like in The Gold.

At most, the gang of south London criminals thought that they would come away from the robbery with £3 million. But in reality, they actually ended up finding £26 million worth of gold bars, uncut diamonds and cash.

After the event proved even more wild, with the gang having to onboard the help of an expert jeweller to dispose of the gold, counterfeit stolen gold bars, the collapse of Johnson Matthey Bankers (where the bullion was stolen from) and the so-called "curse", which refers to the fact that several of those involved were shot and killed.

It was just supposed to be "a typical Old Kent Road armed robbery", according to detectives at the time. But it soon went on to be a massively remarkable event, not only due to the scale of the theft – at the time, the biggest in global history – but for its wider legacy.

The cast for The Gold is a star-studded one, to say the least. It's written by Neil Forsyth (Eric, Ernie & Me) and directed by Academy Award-winning Aneil Karia (The Long Goodbye) along with Lawrence Gough (The Last Bus, Snatch, Misfits).

The cast is led by Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey (www.radiotimes.com/going-out/best-downton-abbey-tours-uk/)) as Brian Boyce, Jack Lowden (Small Axe (www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/small-axe-release-date-cast-trailer-bbc/): Mangrove) also stars as Kenneth Noye, Dominic Cooper (The Preacher) as Edwyn Cooper, Charlotte Spencer (The Duke) as Nicki Jennings, Tom Cullen (Becoming Elizabeth) as John Palmer and Emun Elliott (Guilt (www.radiotimes.com/programme/b-6qlfuh/guilt/)
, Old) as Tony Brightwell.

The cast also includes Sean Harris (Southcliffe), Ellora Torchia (Ali and Ava) and Stefanie Martini (
Prime Suspect (www.radiotimes.com/programme/b-jtsagk/prime-suspect/)
) in the real-life drama.

Hugh Bonneville is also Mr Brown in the Paddington films
He is in a film on Netflix where he plays a horrible ex MP , but I can't remember the name of it
I didn't watch Downtown Abbey.

Bit about the production there.

I also found it slow, but a lot of that was introducing various characters.

To me the lighting and production seemed to have a more 70s style about it than early mid 80s and I was expecting an 80s storyline with modern production values. I could easily believe that this had been made 25 years ago if not more.

martinisforeveryone · 13/02/2023 10:18

On a separate note DownTOWN Abbey is making me smile. Autocorrect? Or a Lidl version of the quasi aristocratic goings on in a period McMansion? 😂

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2023 10:59

Downton !! I said that I didn't watch it and this spelling faux par confirms this ! Lol

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2023 11:01

Faux pas ! I think I'll stay off this thread for a while now after doing two of them

martinisforeveryone · 13/02/2023 11:24

Absolutely no need to hide @the80sweregreat it tickled me 😁

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2023 11:31

I often get things wrong on this forum though !! 😂
Then I try to rectify it and it still goes wrong..

No.
Just a rushed post. Smile

I liked the main lady detective , although it wasn't fair she could wear trousers and warm clothes whilst part of the police uniform for the women was a skirt ! I don't know when that changed , but so unfair back then. Must have been hard chasing criminals around
I remember Kenneth Noye on the news and how violent he was.

And jailed due to his murder of Stephen on think j3 m25

Ha ha - I know who HB is, what I meant was it took me ages to place him. Drove me nuts until I got it - now I can't understand why it took me so long Blush

Agree with others, it's a bit slow. Also Kenneth Noye didn't come across as especially evil, but maybe that was deliberate.

Peachy2005 · 13/02/2023 16:07

Is it just me or does the Slow Horses actor (playing Kenneth Noye) look like a younger Simon Pegg, probably due to the hairstyle as he didn’t look like him in Slow Horses?

daffodilandtulip · 13/02/2023 20:14

Yes he's Mr Brown for me too.

Bit slow but interesting and enjoying the nostalgia.

Southeastdweller · 13/02/2023 22:33

I agree it was slow. I don't think I'll be watching any more episodes - the remaining five are on iPlayer but I'm not interested in watching them.

I also think that from a dramatic perspective it maybe wasn't the right decision to focus on the robbery fall out and investigation, and not feature the build-up to the robbery, for a six part series.

ClaribelLowLieth · 14/02/2023 13:27

I quite liked it but am worried it's going to be a bit speechy.

Jack Lowden is good - I haven't seen him in anything before. Lady detective also good. And I also enjoyed the South London/Kentish-ness of it.

I'll definitely keep watching - I'm finding looking back on that era quite poignant for some reason

butterpuffed · 14/02/2023 17:13

Just seen it. I didn't think it was slow , thought it was really good.

Never did watch Downton Abbey , but I did like Paddington ! Hugh Bonneville is Mr Brown's arrogant twin in this!

lazymum99 · 14/02/2023 18:00

We really enjoyed it. I love watching things of that era. Brings it all back.
@Blondeshavemorefun must have been a while ago you knocked on his door. I hope he is still in prison for murdering some poor bastard in a road rage argument.

Netaporter · 14/02/2023 18:15

@Blondeshavemorefun thanks for the thread. I too have had the misfortune of dealing with one of the robbers completely mischaracterised in this as a loveable rogue.he isn’t. Nasty piece of work.

Sashimiandhisthunderpaws · 14/02/2023 19:08

@lazymum99 no he was let out in 2019. It's so sad. Stephen Cameron's mum died in 2017. Then his dad committed suicide last year after the death of his dog.

lazymum99 · 14/02/2023 19:25

I didn’t realise that. Thought he had to do at least 30 years. But I suppose it all happened in the mid nineties.

Sporty2022 · 14/02/2023 19:27

Haven’t seen this yet but watching soon.

I forgot that Kenneth Noye has been released, for the murder of Stephen Cameron. I remember this well and used to live in the area, Swanley in Kent.

I have no insight into Noye, but I used to know the family of Stephens girlfriend. Not Stephen himself though.

When I say knew, I didn’t know them particularly well, but Danielle’s dad was a boxer in the 80s and I knew some of his other kids. I didn’t ever meet Danielle though.

Aixellency · 14/02/2023 19:38

I suppose it was a little slow, at the start. But I must have enjoyed it anyway - started episode 1 after Love Island last night, fell asleep halfway through Ep 5 around 4.00 this morning. Then finished the series this afternoon.

It was all quite absorbing, but, no spoilers, I agree with the main objections in all the reviews.

Enjoy your TV pace viewing!

Noye murdered an undercover cop that was carrying out surveillance, im sure Noye was acquitted. He's a bad bastard and utterly ruthless.

nicetoseetgesunsout · 15/02/2023 08:54

My uncle (aunts husband) was involved in this robbery. I'll watch it on catch up. I was 12 at the time but it was spoken about freely at their house. I didn't follow the news then so I only knew what I heard being talked about. Can't really remember but I think he / they hid some of the gold in their house and garden in Bromley. Weirdly, I didn't think anything of it at the time. Think mum may have told me not to talk about it. They looked after the dogs -Brinks and Mat so I met them. My uncle was never arrested.
My aunt and uncle are both dead now and have been for 15-20 years so I can't ask them anything.
Also, my friend's dad was in the Hatton Garden heist in 2015. Brian Reader. I was brought up in SE London / Kent and met his daughter in a local pub (Bexley) when we were both 17 and we shared a love of horse riding. Her dad bought her stables which she ran as a business after leaving school and I stabled my horse there. He used to take us out to all of the big London clubs, that was fun. He told me to wear a nurses uniform when I took my driving test as that would make me more likely to pass!
Their house was huge - my friend had a large bedroom, en-suite and lounge area so I used to stay a lot. Her 21st birthday party was amazing - that was in 1992. They had one of those massive champagne bottles alongside jellied eels and pie and mash on the buffet table. I've not seen her for about 25years now, after a stupid falling out, so only heard of the robbery through the news ....and my mum ringing to tell me! I haven't watched any of the films though.

lazymum99 · 15/02/2023 10:24

Mumsnet never fails to amaze.
Also this article is interesting and mentions the dogs
