DS2 (aged 10) wants to watch horror and won't be fobbed off by anything age appropriate. Help!

Pretty much as the title... he wants zombies, monsters, etc. Stuff that we watched as kids in the 80s doesn't seem to cut it, as it's old 🙄

Please hit me with your best recommendations for a boy who is currently lamenting loudly at the cruelty of me not letting him watch Squid Game the problem is, he'd LOVE it

It’s a bit tame but what about creeped out on Netflix?

MeghanThyStallion · 14/01/2023 16:33

My 10yo loved Wednesday.

Xrays · 14/01/2023 16:36

Wednesday
stranger things
Umbrella academy
sweet tooth
Greenland (the film with Gerrard Butler in it I think?)

My 10 year old loved all of those, he’s mad about scary stuff too. (As I was as a child - I used to love Jaws and the Gremlins around 6)!

Xrays · 14/01/2023 16:37

Oh - and Goosebumps?!

sevenoneseventhree · 14/01/2023 16:41

There's plenty of children's horror out there, but I'd be telling him no for adult horror.

Onnabugeisha · 14/01/2023 16:43

These are all intense but kid friendly:
Spirited Away
Howl’s Moving Castle
Coraline
Cruella
The Spiderwick Chronicles
Monster House
Snow White and the Huntsman
The House with a Clock in its Walls
Hugo
Princess Mononoke
Akira

Onnabugeisha · 14/01/2023 16:44

Oh, and the new Troll (2022) film

HippyChickMama · 14/01/2023 16:49

Dd is 9 and loves horror, she does like the old Hammer horror films though (most are PG) but sounds like they're out. She also liked Jaws, Edward Scissorhands and Goosebumps

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 14/01/2023 16:56

I let my twins watch The Woman In Black when they were 11. They found it scary, but not nightmare inducing. My 16 yo refused to watch it, he'd seen it before and never wanted to see it again!

My youngest watched Stranger Things at 10 - he loved it.

Your daughter has great tastes with the old hammer horror movies.

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 14/01/2023 16:57

Sleepy Hollow, the Johnny Depp one, they also really liked.

noimaginationforausername · 14/01/2023 16:57

I'd go for Stranger Things or Wednesday maybe although my 9 year old just watched it and didn't find it remotely horror like.

If he wants more how about something like Final Destination or Buffy? They might be too old for him though.

I'm a real horror fan and started early (8/9) thanks to a video shop near my house who didn't give a toss about age ratings and also a Dad that loved horror and didn't give a toss about age ratings!

PinkyU · 14/01/2023 17:00

Surely you just say “no”!?

Many horror films also have other adult themes such as sexual elements, drug use, and fairly offensive language, not to mention extreme violence. He’s 10, why would you entertain exposing him to that?

BusySittingDown · 14/01/2023 17:00

My DD aged 11 loves horror.

I'd let him watch Stranger Things and Wednesday. A lot of the kids I know have watched them.

My other DD aged 15 hates horror but will watch Stranger Things! 😀

This

Mustreadabook · 14/01/2023 17:10

I'm having this too with DS11! He loved stranger things, maze runner, hunger games. In fact hunger games might of started him off and I only let him read it because he came home with it from the primary school library. Shaun of the Dead was a hit and though violent no other scary stuff except Zombies!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 14/01/2023 17:13

How about the X files?

HippyChickMama · 14/01/2023 17:14

@frenchnoodle she especially loves the 'creature feature' ones and House on Haunted Hill (the 1959 Vincent Price version) is one of her all time favourite films. I love that she loves Cushing, Price and Lee despite the films being older than me!

@IScreamAtMichaelangelos forgot Return to Oz, that's quite scary and another favourite here

maeveiscurious · 14/01/2023 17:17

Our watched Lost Boys at 13 and found it scary

Onnabugeisha · 14/01/2023 17:22

I know it’s not horror but has wizards and goblins and orcs….Lord of the Rings and Hobbit

Love lost boys! A newer one is called Day Shift

BryanAdamsLeftAnkle · 14/01/2023 17:24

My 8 year old loves venom, carnage and recently zombieland. We have talked him through and he wasn't phased by any of them. He laughed at Shaun of the dead too.

They are as dark as I'm prepared to go.

But since it's posted in telly addicts and not parenting I'm guessing OP has said no and now wants tips on things to offer instead.
So I think you've kind of missed the point here.

riotlady · 14/01/2023 17:41

I wonder if more supernatural horror might be better as there’s less gore? The Others is a 12 iirc and I think I saw that around that age.

Actually the tv show Supernatural might work too- especially the early seasons where there’s a different monster every week.

If he would watch older stuff I would have suggested The Thing!

Cece92 · 14/01/2023 17:43

I let my DD9 watch Wednesday with me and she wasn't phased by it. She's desperate to watch stranger things which I've never watched. My sisters watched it and said she wouldn't let her watch it at 9. X
