Best Jane Austen adaptations?

What are your favourite Jane Austen adaptations?

Mine are the BBC Emma series and the BBC Pride and Prejudice.

I am not very well at the moment and just watching the 1940 Pride and Prejudice on iplayer.

I'm very happy to get the opportunity to see it, but can't say it's going to knock my favourite version off its perch.

Any other gemsI may have missed?

Special mention has to go Death Comes to Pemberley though- Matthew Goode’s Wickham is the only portrayal of that character where I’m like “Ok I get it” when it comes to why he was supposed to have so many women falling over him!

Oh yes, this is the other antihero casting I would throw caution and stays to the wind for 😄

Those of you who haven't watched the 2020 Emma yet - you're in for a treat! I was skeptical at first but really loved it.

…the dance scene where Johnny Flynn becomes all flustered…oh my! 😊

AnotherEmma · 08/01/2023 14:05

Yep!

Nothing beats the Ciaran Hinds/Amanda Root persuasion.

The BBC sense and sensibility with Hattie Morahan is my 2nd favourite adaption of a Jane Austen book.

Im fond of the earlier BBCs: P & P with David Rintoul and Elizabeth Garvie; Northanger Abbey with Peter Firth and Katherine Schlesinger; Mansfield Park with Sylvestra Le Touzel and Nicholas Farrell. but these have not brilliant sets and costuming.

MissMarpleRocks · 08/01/2023 15:18

I prefer David Rintoul as Darcy than Colin Firth.

BBC Pride and Prejudice (1995) and Emma Thompson Sense and Sensibility. I really want to see the Persuasion version everyone keeps recommending (Amanda Root) but can't find it on a streaming service.

It's on YouTube.

I just watched the Emma Thompson S&S last night for the first time and thought it was excellent!

Not Austen but the adaptation of Rebecca with Charles Dance and Emilia Fox is excellent IMO

The recent Rebecca with Lily James and Armie Hammer is an abomination. Kristin Scott Thomas as Mrs Danvers FFS.
Lost In Austen is delicious 'Lizzie Bennett is lending me her mobile!'.

The House of Mirth with Gillian Anderson, wonderful though very sad of course.

You beat me to it! I went through a huge Wharton phase a few years ago. I think there's one book with a happy ending. (And some of her short stories are genuinely funny.)

I don't think you're alone in contemplating running away with Henry Crawford...I think most people prefer naughty Henry over good old safe Edmund Grin

I saw a great comment about Edmund and Fanny - that if your OH turned round to you and said we must invite the Darcys/Bingleys/Wentworths for dinner you'd probably be quite OK. If s/he said 'we must invite the Bertrams' your heart wuld sink and you'd say 'Must we? they are so virtuous I can't stand it.'

Northanger Abbey with Felicity Jones and JJ Feild is my no.1 comfort watch, its so funny and romantic. Also agree that Elizabeth Garvie is best Elizabeth although the production itself is rather staid.

Death Comes to Pemberly another comfort (?) watch. Plus it has a sex scene which immediately adds a few points ;)

verdantverdure · 08/01/2023 18:22

Is there any way to watch the 1980 Pride and Prejudice on streaming anywhere?

I've just seen that the Romola Garai Emma is on UKTV Play.

I think the 1980 Pride and Prejudice is available on Amazon and BritBox. Some scenes are also on YouTube.

How have you escaped/managed so long? I don't know how many times I've seen but you can be sure that it's staying on if I happen to flick on to it.

CrossPurposes · 08/01/2023 18:40

It is on Dailymotion.

Another vote for the Amanda Root/ Ciaran Hinds version of Persuasion - it's just beautiful.

How about Austen follow on books? Are any of them worth reading/listening to? There seem to be a lot of them on Audible.

Longbourne is SO good.

stickybear · 08/01/2023 20:29

I'm about halfway through Longbourne and really enjoying it, hope someone adapts it for TV!

ageingdisgracefully · 08/01/2023 20:51

I love 1995 P and P, 1995 Persuasion.
Also loved the 1996 Emma (Strong / Beckinsale) which I don't think anyone has mentioned yet.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/01/2023 20:56

BBC p&p and Emma with Kate Beckinsale.

I'll look that up. I listened to Mrs Wickham and wasn't overly impressed.

I liked the beginning of Longbourn because it gave the perspective of ordinary people working there eg the scene when Elizabeth heroically strides out to visit Jane who is sick seems very different when you meet the woman faced with getting the mud out of her dress at a time when laundry was all done by hand.

I went off the book half-way through but read it a few years ago so can't remember why.

I read The Other Bennett Sister by Janice Hadlow recently and loved it. It gives you a whole new perspective on Mary.
