What are your favourite Jane Austen adaptations?

Mine are the BBC Emma series and the BBC Pride and Prejudice.

I am not very well at the moment and just watching the 1940 Pride and Prejudice on iplayer.

I'm very happy to get the opportunity to see it, but can't say it's going to knock my favourite version off its perch.

Any other gemsI may have missed?

Oh yes, adore Clueless 😍

Haven't seen a period costume version of Emma that I like tho not seen the 2020 version yet.

There's an adaptation of Mansfield Park that merges bits of Jane Austens personality and life with the character of Fanny Price that's just wonderful. Usually I like a faithful adaptation but it's such a great blend and fabulous cast, and breathes life into Mansfield Park in ways some of the other adaptations dont.
Johnny Lee Miller as Edmund is so lovely, score and setting so brilliant, it's just a great film! It has Frances O Connor as Fanny Price, came out in the 90s.

Mine are the BBC Emma series and the BBC Pride and Prejudice.

Love those two the best.

I like the Emma Thompson version of Sense and Sensibility too.

So do I.

I love the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice and also Love and Friendship ( based on Lady Susan ) , of the two the latter would be my favourite .

AnotherEmma · 07/01/2023 20:22

Those of you who haven't watched the 2020 Emma yet - you're in for a treat! I was skeptical at first but really loved it.

Squirrelsnut · 07/01/2023 20:24

Persuasion with Amanda Root. Incomparable.

Persuasion with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds. Best ever.

Without question, this one.

PermanentTemporary · 07/01/2023 20:28

Persuasion with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds is number one.

The 80s BBC Mansfield Park is absolutely excellent as well. Long and slowly revealing.

PermanentTemporary · 07/01/2023 20:30

The one with Sylvestra Le Touzel

FizzyStream · 07/01/2023 20:31

Not Austen but the adaptation of Rebecca with Charles Dance and Emilia Fox is excellent IMO

SenecaFallsRedux · 07/01/2023 20:34

I do like Rupert Penry Jones, but for me, Ciaran Hinds is the definitive Captain Wentworth. He and Amanda Root have great chemistry in that film, but in a restrained early 19th century kind of way.

I also love the 2020 Emma. What a treat in every way, especially visually. And Bill Nighy as Mr Woodhouse alone is worth the price of admission.

Hbh17 · 07/01/2023 20:40

BBC P&P from 1995 is the absolute best (altho I fondly remember watching the 1978 version when it was broadcast.... David Rintoul!).

The most recent Emma, plus the Gwyneth P one are both good.

And lovely Alan Rickman as Col Brandon (but Emma T & Hugh Grant were miscast).

verdantverdure · 07/01/2023 20:40

I think I'm going to order a secondhand DVD of both the Persuasions from somewhere and have a massive binge. Smile

I really enjoyed 'Lost in Austen'

LordEmsworth · 07/01/2023 20:44

Persuasion is my favourite Austen novel, and the Amanda Root version absolutely does it justice.

The Sally Hawkins one was good, other than Rupert Penry Jones having the sex appeal of a wet lettuce - until the ending! That was appalling and ruined it for me.

[Whispers] I actually quite liked the Billie Piper version of Mansfield Park.

Difficult to get hold of but the Persuasion version with Amanda Root. <swoon>

It's available on Youtube. I may have rewatched several dozen times 😁

Bill Nighy is my favourite Mr Woodhouse.

I liked that all the young characters were actually young.

The only thing I don't like about Sense and Sensibility is that Alan Rickman's Colonel Brandon is said to be about 35 but looks about 50 and we're told that Kate Winslet's Marianne is a teenager.

I know actors have a range of ages they can play, but credulity can be stretched only so far.

I've got the Amanda Root version on DVD but nothing to play it on <sobs>.

I had no idea you could watch from YouTube !!
Thank you pp

I'm the reverse, I don't rate Bill Nighy's Mr Woodhouse at all - he's far too flamboyant and dramatic. Mr Woodhouse is a worrier and a hypochondriac who likes to live quietly, no way would he jump down the stairs! Johnny Flynn is TOO young, he's supposed to be the older brother not the younger.

SenecaFallsRedux · 07/01/2023 21:02

Persuasion is my favorite Jane Austen novel too. It's such a gift when filmmakers manage to turn your favorite Austen novel into your favorite Austen film.

I agree that Johnny Flynn looks young, but he was the exact age of Mr Knightley when the film was made.

In several of the adaptations, Knightley manages to look younger than his brother.

@Farmageddon thank you! just popped it in now. that's my Saturday night viewing sorted.

Persuasion is my favourite Jane Austen. Don't mind the Sally Hawkins version, but keen to see how this compares.

Notonthestairs · 07/01/2023 21:16

I love aspects of most of the adaptations and regularly watch all of them Blush

But I particularly enjoy the Romola Garai version as I think having an extra hour gives all the characters (not just Emma and Knightley) a bit of space to develop. Ditto the BBC Sense and Sensibility with Hattie Morahan and Charity WakefieldI was sure about David Morrissey as Brandon but I've come around! Dominic Cooper played Willoughby very well.

Really didn't warm to Emma. initially but thoroughly enjoy it now.

Enjoy! I may have to watch it again soon.

Also really like the Sense and Sensibility 90's version with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet.
