MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #38): Where we’re still reeling from the 2022 top 5 scoring Jdrama First Love v Alchemy of Souls kerfuffle. What can I say? Takeru Satoh broke our scoring rubric.

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our shows are on Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

I passed on the Inside Asia recommendation to a friend who is planning a trip to Japan. We really should be on commission!

I actually looked twice because I thought surely EAW must be there... Agree hard to categorise...

There's an argument for a group discount boaty!

Hi all! I've just started Crash Course in Romance and think I will enjoy it. ML in the first episode saying he doesn't thing romantic relationships are productive / have any utility??? I love that kind of set up for him now falling in love and realising what a fool he was :D

Just finished Fight For My Way - loved, loved, loved it and agree, probably my favourite PSJ character. I really liked him in Itaewon Class but his terrible hair in that pushes it into second place 😅

polkettle · 18/01/2023 21:52

Finished The Makanai and it was just lovely soothing January telly. Highly recommend for a gentle mood.
Going to read the Manga now.

Isn't it great to have a proper Netflix Saturday release rom-com to watch? We've missed those!

MigsandTiggs · 19/01/2023 11:43

Re InfoAsia, I think that we could well have enough people on this thread interested in a self-guided group tour of SK next year. And we could use pol's itinerary as a starting point!😁

I'm now watching Juji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre on Netflix. So disappointed to discover The last of us wasn't released in one drop so now I have to wait.
The Mandalorian S3- coming soon!!!

Saram13 · 19/01/2023 12:38

Oooh Migs Junji Ito! That's going straight on my list!

Speaking of Junji Ito 😁 Last year I invested cough in some BTS fan-made photocards and squirrelled them away as bookmarks in recent acquisitions carefully choosing books no-one apart from me is going to open. Look what I found when I picked up Cat Diary to read the other day. I think I did quite a good job of matching the colours with the other book too 😂 THIS people is why I have all the nutty dreams. Full immersion 😂

Saram, I call that well curated!

TheLoupGarou · 19/01/2023 15:30

I saw Junji Ito on my netflix list this morning, I'll definitely be checking it out.

Haha, good work Saram - I've just dropped some cash on a pile of BT21 merch for dd's birthday. When I asked her what she wanted she said 'Jimin' - as he's probably not available for 7-year olds b'day parties at this stage in his career, Chimmy is going to have to substitute!

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 19/01/2023 20:39

Woo hoo Junji Ito on the watchlist 👍

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 19/01/2023 20:41

More Gen Hoshino on Netflix too!

Have been watching "Doom at Your Service" today - it feels like a bit of a guilty pleasure, but I'm enjoying it - I do like a bit of the old 'supernatural boyfriend' trope 🤣 although the bad dye job on the ML's hair is a bit immersion breaking at times ....

boatyardblues · 20/01/2023 17:44

I’m still watching Terrace House, the Nagano one. The youngest guy is a prize plum. He can’t read a room at all and keeps annoying people. I feel really sorry for his housemates.

MIU404 on Netflix is great craic. Worth checking out.

I really enjoyed that Loup ☺️

TheLoupGarou · 20/01/2023 20:04

Oh TheGirl, the more I watch the more I realise it is right up my street - its getting a bit sad though! I've got VERY invested & I hope it doesn't end tragically. The two leads have great chemistry - I really love their dialogue and banter with each other.

AmVa · 20/01/2023 20:07

I really enjoyed DTYS and I love Seo In-Guk - I feel like he always has great chemistry with his co-stars even when the show they're in is a bit dodge... Looking at you Cafe Minamdang

TheLoupGarou · 20/01/2023 20:19

I like him too - I couldn't get past episode 2 of Cafe Minamdang but I might soldier on and give it another go after this.

AmVa · 20/01/2023 20:26

I really liked the core gang in Cafe Minamdang and thought when they were all bouncing off each other it was great, but the plot was a bit convoluted and there were more than a few plot holes by the end...

boatyardblues · 20/01/2023 21:52

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 20/01/2023 19:38

Me too. I love Park Bo Young. She makes everything she is in better.

Yes! boaty I really like her too.

DH and I watching Train to Busan, continuing our zombie theme. Even though I've seen it before more than once, I am grinding my teeth with stress!

Super interesting long read article on BBC this morning re: Japan. Not the usual "they still use fax machines!" analysis.

Watched the first two episodes of Strangers Again last night - yet another law show (they're obsessed with them!) but quite a fun take with divorced divorce lawyers.
