MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #38): Where we’re still reeling from the 2022 top 5 scoring Jdrama First Love v Alchemy of Souls kerfuffle. What can I say? Takeru Satoh broke our scoring rubric.

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our shows are on Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Sounds interesting Boaty

I want to finish off UTQU this week, I'm still only half way though it. I MUST NOT START A NEW DRAMA until I've finished it 🙅‍♀️

polkettle · 10/01/2023 08:03

This conversation sent me off down a The Living Soap reminiscence rabbit hole...

Do you remember The Real World on MTV in the 90s? I'm sure that was the concept of that show, it just followed people getting on with their lives. I used to think it was fascinating

Yup!!

I remember the San Francisco one being on because Puck was the baddie (I don't think I was allowed to watch it though!)

How times have changed 😁

I finished part 1 of The Glory yesterday. Loved it! Can't wait for part 2 in March. Now I know how you all feel waiting for new releases 😃

I just saw the theswoonnetflix's Instagram post about the finale of SI. As I think is clear by now 😁 I have never seen an episode and I have no idea about the qualities and talents of any of the contestants. Nearly fell off my chair at the surgically-enhanced thumbnails though 😱 a couple of them look like they were created by AI 😳 The guy in photo F somehow has the vibe of a premier league 80s footballer 😂 And the guy in photo A must be the small-but-perfectly-formed ex-marine (or whatever he was), right? Maybe I do need to watch it after all 🤔😁

Saram13 · 10/01/2023 10:21

Oooh and the Yet To Come cinema tickets have been released! 🥳 Have booked one date. Very likely to book a second one with a different friend in a different city 😁🤘🏻

MigsandTiggs · 10/01/2023 14:08

No spoiler
The SI2 finale was very satisfying even though I didn't see the surprise coming. Can't believe that in the end, the person I cheered for the most was So-e.

All I can say is Dong Woo is an ass and I hope he learns something from watching the playback.🙄Even after the show, the competition with Jin Young remained.

I was thinking I'd have to go alone like a creeper as well, but the kids have agreed to come with me 😂 DD & DS2 are up for it, DS1 said he'd come under sufferance (had to be bribed with pizza).

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 10/01/2023 16:10

I’ll go with you @TheLoupGarou!

TheLoupGarou · 10/01/2023 16:26

FedUp I can only find the Victoria Sq Odeon showing it so far - it would be fun to go together! 🚨 Mini meet-up klaxon!

I'm hoping my shifts are out for February - am away to log in and check 🤞

TheLoupGarou · 10/01/2023 16:40

Gah! Shifts not released for that week yet, but I'm in work tomorrow so I will ask my manager for a sneak peek and pm you 🤞

polkettle · 10/01/2023 18:21

Have had to break off SI watch after episode 9 to cook supper for various people but thought the feels in that one were top notch. SO many more butterflies than Love Island.

Wildflower13 · 10/01/2023 18:33

I also really enjoyed the ending of AOS. Very relieved too. I have booked my tickets and have been lucky to have family offered to come with me. If you went to other screenings, can you tell me if it is all a young audience. Will I feel out of place?

Cineworld Odyssey also showing. Let me know what you can do 👍

Saram13 · 10/01/2023 19:08

@Wildflower13 When I went to PTD (alone, in a European city) I only saw one other person around my age (a very friendly Filipino lady called Ginger 😃). The vast majority were girls/women aged say 16 to 25. But I didn't feel remotely out of place. We were all there for the same reason, it was sold out, and there was a party atmosphere 😁

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 10/01/2023 19:21

I've booked to see Yet to Come in the cinema by myself! A couple of twitter acquaintances are going on the Saturday to see it on the 4D screen but I'm on shifts then so just going to go on my own 😆

Wildflower13 · 10/01/2023 19:28

Thank you, it makes me feel better. I think if my family hadn’t offered I may have gone on my own too. It’s just that I have never met any other army irl !

It was a real mix at my screening. Yes, lots of youngsters but also a smattering of 25-35 year olds and filthy noonas of greater vintage. I sat next to a woman my age(ish) who was there with her daughter. The ARMY did us proud and sang us through the bits where the sound dropped.

I have booked tickets for Yet to Come and will drag DH along if my kdrama mad friend doesn’t fancy it.

I just booked Yet to Come and so glad that where I live we are being advised to wear masks in public places so no one would be able to see how old I am 😂So far only about 5 tickets sold ...

MigsandTiggs · 11/01/2023 07:17

Trolley (Netflix) Up to ep 7 now and the ramifications of sexual assault allegations are being explored more widely within Korean family, society and judicial protocol. The cultural advantages (or not) of family background sit like fog, obscuring justice. It's not a fast paced drama, but this enhances the seriousness of the subject matter. There is much to recommend to anyone interested in self sacrifice vs the greater good, and if you've studied or are interested in Moral Philosophy, this is definitely a show for you.
Oh, and there's a bit of a mystery surrounding a pregnant female who approaches the FL's family. It's a kdrama, after all!

Cobol · 11/01/2023 10:37

Morning all. I finally caught up with the season finale of Alchemy of Souls last night and it didn't disappoint at all 👏. I'd been avoiding all social media until I'd watched it in fear of spoilers but having now caught up with the thread I see I needn't have worried too much as you've all now discovered the King of Clubs in Alice in Borderland and have been far to excited about that to talk much about AoS 😂. I started watching Alice last week and was going to mention him but then decided it was better not to ruin the surprise 😉.

MigsandTiggs · 11/01/2023 13:27

Saram how on earth did you guess that photo A was the ex UDT bit of rough?? I'm well impressed 👏🏼
