Marie Antoinette! Where's her maid?

Just watched the first episode of this new series on BBC, and while I enjoyed the programme generally, I couldn't help wondering why the programme makers decided that Marie should travel to France completely alone but for her little dog. She would never have travellled that distance from Vienna (500miles?) in those days without a lady's maid to attend to her needs and keep her company. Was it just that they wanted to emphasise her isolation or what? What were they thinking???

I watched it tonight too. I agree with you! There were a lot of inaccuracies- such as the meeting of her carriage in the woods. The king and the dauphin were both actually there to meet her and accompany her on the final part of her journey.

QueenSmartypants · 01/01/2023 01:39

I don't think historical accuracy is what they're aiming for lol

Mykittensmittens · 01/01/2023 01:39

It’s not meant to be in any way accurate - it’s a dramatisation.

its made by the same production company (Canal) who made Versailles, which was a very enjoyable and fairly tenuous historical romp.

Celia24 · 01/01/2023 01:40

Also the part where she gets up in the night to comfort the crying baby sleeping in the room. I don't think so!

DrCoconut · 01/01/2023 01:42

What happened to the pug? I've just got to the episode where the old king dies.

AmazonPrim · 01/01/2023 01:50

I'm loving this series! I was especially intrigued with the dental braces she was forced to get by her mother in the first episode. I had to google it and the procedure. All I can say is how truly horrific! 😬

AnnieSnap · 01/01/2023 01:59

I have just finished episode three and I’m loving it. @DrCoconut Louis had her Pug brought back and gave him to her in episode two.

The actual MA haad a huge entourage of carriages and attendants on her journey to France (and an exhausting programme of celebrations), but as someone said, they're not going for historical accuracy here.

OneInEight · 01/01/2023 13:53

It may not be historically accurate but very enjoyable nevertheless (I usually hate period dramas which might be a clue that the purists might not enjoy this one).

Stillamum3 · 01/01/2023 14:27

Yes, I agree with all those who say it's very enjoyable and interesting and not going for historical accuracy. It just struck me as very odd. Otherwise, excellent. Watched three episodes last night and had to go to bed eventually as it was 4am. Looking forward the the rest. Amazon Prim agree - the braces were horrific!

@Stillamum3 yup - I’ve been saying this too? No lady in waiting!

PinkFrogss · 01/01/2023 20:19

I agree, but also really enjoyed it.

Would love to see a season 2 closer to the Revolution

charabang · 01/01/2023 22:19

I've watched the first two episodes and am throughly enjoying it. Can see that it was made by the same company that produced Versailles; a programme that was cancelled prematurely in my opinion. Only trouble for me is that I'm constantly Googling the characters to fact check.

Redtuckshop · 04/01/2023 09:40

As a bit of a courtesan fan girl, I think they got Madame du Barry spot on. She did love that randy old man!

AnnieSnap · 04/01/2023 13:26

I’ve finished all episodes. I enjoyed everything about it. Brilliantly written, acted and produced. A feast for the eyes. I do hope they do a second series that takes us through to the end of that Monarchy.

ouch321 · 04/01/2023 13:32

Also finished it.

Surprised it stopped after she had had the baby boy. Expected it to go through to the revolution.

I mentioned this on the other thread but there is a film of thr same name that's a fun watch from a few years back on one of the streamers.

AnnieSnap · 04/01/2023 17:13

@ouch321 off to look for that

What happened to the pug? I've just got to the episode where the old king dies.

Keep watching - it's OK.

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/01/2023 17:20

I really enjoyed it and hope there's a second series. I was also watching with Google to hand and they really did take that long to consummate their marriage.

Robin233 · 05/01/2023 13:57

Loved this.
Also watched until 4pm on the first sitting.
Still got the final episode to watch.
There was a very good film with Kirsten Dunst I enjoyed , when she played Marie

WednesdaysPlaits · 05/01/2023 14:04

They'll definitely do a second series. Most of the drama in the story is still to come!

WednesdaysPlaits · 05/01/2023 14:19

For those who have enjoyed it, The Empress on Netflix is about the Hapsburgs (Elizabeth of Austria in particular) and is fab.

fucketyfuckwit · 05/01/2023 18:27

What was with the throwing small balls at them on their wedding night? Anyone know? very odd!

WednesdaysPlaits · 05/01/2023 18:36

Apparently they were sweets. I’m not sure why they threw them though

LlynTegid · 05/01/2023 19:04

Given the scriptwriter, I was expecting nothing historically accurate at all. Even though it seemed reasonably well paced.
