Has anyone watched this tonight? I loved the book so much and was actually nervous about how well the adaptation would be done! Just watched part 1 and dying to discuss!

I agree 100 per cent with LuluBlakey1

I live very close to a lot of the locations....and spotted instantly the errors. Plus all film in balmy summer weather.
The relationships between the guys in the 80's...totally fabricated. In Ayrshire....yes, great mates, but not the hugging / deep conversations etc.
Noodles wife/ partner - good actress but again badly cast. No depth at all.
Noodles himself, too young. Casting totally inaccurate.
A lot of the dialogue, particularly in the first episode seemed to be lifted word from word from the TV Series 'Still Game'.
With regard to location.....it flipped from Girvan to Dunure to Irvine to Horse Island in Ardrossan. Very poor continuity.

Why would the changing of location be an issue except for the 0.1% of people from the area who would recognise the locations?

TheSproutOfWrath · 01/01/2023 19:29

I live in the area too and some local people took to Nextdoor and were up in arms about the caravan there. Apparently (until they found out it was a film set) it was the start of an influx of people they didn't want.

Really opened my eyes to some peoples bigoted views round here.

So far enjoying it.

Kontiki · 01/01/2023 21:57

To those that flagged the fact that varying the locations wasn't an issue if you weren't local - you are all correct!
It was just annoying me because I recognise them in detail. If it was a series filmed elsewhere in the UK, I would have no knowledge or no issue.
Mea Culpa!

Oh no! I can imagine how all that went.

Did not like it at all.

Also sick of seeing Martin Compston.

ToooOldForThis · 02/01/2023 08:53

I didn't think location changing was any kind of new thing! It vaguely entertained me when if they faced one way they saw greenan shore but turn around and there's Ardrossan. But surely that's normal in TV/films? Glasgow isn't really Gotham City!

I honestly don't think he's a great actor at all, dh and I always used to laugh at his woodenness on Line of Duty so I'm really surprised that he keeps getting all these roles.

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2023 10:23

One of the TV reviewers wrote about what a revelation MC was in this...that he suddenly revealed he can act and how much he suited this role. Not sure I agree but a few people seemed to think he was perfect for this role because he is so ordinary.

However, and I know I bang on about this, he really IS good in Sweet Sixteen.

He's good to work with, and takes direction well, apparently. He also has become rent-a-Scot!

The book is beautiful, lyrical and incredibly well written. The TV programme is travesty. I expected to cry and didn’t shed a tear. What a waste.

I'm definitely going to read the book now. Watched it and actually wondered if there is something emotionally wrong with me as folk were raving about it online and I didn't find it moving at all. Something was just "missing" and I suspect I'll find it in the book. Also made me think I'd love to see more of Ashley Jensen in things as she did so much with what little she was given in the programme (IMO).

Ginger1982 · 04/01/2023 22:14

Watched this tonight and pleased to see the age discrepancy also irritated others! I also felt as though they could have done with one, if not two, more episodes just to explore the issues with family etc and a bit more of the flashbacks.

I'm all for assisted dying. My father died with cancer in excruciating pain 27 years ago. If he could have ended it, he would have and I wouldn't have blamed him.

MotherofGoddess · 05/01/2023 08:13

Just finished this. Episode one was better than the second. Really thought it would be emotional but as it was I just thought it was really shallow.
so questions - what was the significance of Manchester?
why is that character called Noodles?
And forgive me, as much as I don’t want to see pain and suffering, I didn’t think Tully seemed “that” ill? Being sick twice isn’t a realistic portrayal of cancer.
Sounds like the book is better!

Giraffy · 05/01/2023 13:53

Does he call him Noodles constantly in the book too? I felt that it was shoehorned in at any opportunity!

2Rebecca · 09/09/2023 20:44

We listened to the audiobook on the way to and from our holiday and enjoyed it although I didn't warm to Tully and his character as a boy didn't fit with him being an English teacher and Anna never seemed like a lawyer in the book and I wonder if the author changed the occupations of the real people in the book
In the BBC drama Compton is too young and the guy playing Tully too old and not handsome and charismatic enough. Anna just looks like an actress not a lawyer and seems too ditsy.
Iona is miscast. Little chemistry and as in the book they went on about Angie who Noodles fancied in Manchester being black I do think the book would have mentioned Iona being black. It's the BBC diversity quota thing. Iona never seemed real in the book though but none of them did except Noodles.
