There are some blokes (because this is essentially blokes) who are amazing in a war and totally dreadful out of it.

I heard a really interesting talk from a forensic psychiatrist a while ago who talked about how there’s probably a societal/evolutionary reason why humans suffer from sociopathy and psychopathy - in pretty much all of human existence we’ve needed the kind of people who would be excellent at fighting, and they would be the war leaders, the heroes.

That's really interesting about psychopaths filling the fighter requirement.

Yes, and then if there is a genetic component to passing sociopathy etc on, the Big Bad War Hero is actually more likely to have lots of women and lots of children

My mum was telling me a story about Paddy Mayne arguing in a

Oops sorry, in a pub. He lifted the lit fire grate and beat the other bloke around the head with it. He often drove his sports car at full speed through the town whilst drunk. He was drunk one night and hit a tractor (?) and died.
He's buried in the graveyard across the road from me, there's always been a lot of interest about him.

It’s also interesting that his true, quite privileged, background was altered in the tv series to create more tension between him and David Stirling.

TigerDroveAgain · 06/11/2022 22:56

I'm loving this series and have just got the Ben Macintyre book on Kindle

flowerycurtain · 09/11/2022 21:19

There's a good Obsessed with podcast on BBC sounds about this. They have a historian who explains some of the stuff eg with the disastrous parachute drop they couldn't have delayed it if they wanted to achieve their mission.

Nicking the piano was real!

HermioneWeasley · 09/11/2022 21:21

Really enjoyed this series

Oblomov22 · 09/11/2022 21:30

I was so so sad when he sat in the bar in Cairo and he told him that Eve had died and the next minute he was captured and apparently he stays there for the whole of the war and I was .... this is just so so sad for me.

Loving this so far, 3 episodes in and wishing I hadn't seen the last post.

I just watched the first two with DH last night and enjoyed it. Although I’m a bit “Wtaf” about what they did with Paddy Mayne’s character. He came from a very well to do family, was the Irish Heavyweight boxing champion and played rugby for Ireland and the British Lions (and these were in the days when players didn’t get paid, so you needed £££) and was a solicitor before and after the war. Like there’s no doubt he was a headcase when he came home but let’s not pretend he was some class warrior with an axe to grind. Also the inference of a romantic relationship with Eoin McGonigal, which I don’t think adds to the story.

The three leads do an excellent job though, great performances so far. Alfie Allen does “man on the edge just about holding it together” very well.

I as a Jane Austen fangirl also liked the fact that there was a scene with Mr Wickham (1995) and William Martin (Emma, 2020).

I loved his character. Just mesmerising, like you say how on the edge he was but so clipped and polite. I was strangely upset at his final scene in the desert with the plane Shock.

yes, a bit unnecessary ☹️

Mosik · 12/11/2022 22:26

Yes, shame I saw that massive spoiler before I finished it.
Brilliant series. They should give it a better title. I've recommended it to everyone.

Notsympatheticenough · 13/11/2022 08:54

“Also the inference of a romantic relationship with Eoin McGonigal, which I don’t think adds to the story.”

I think it really did, it added another layer of humanity, and seems to have some basis of some kind. He did go out and search in the desert for the body when everyone else went on leave.

maranella · 13/11/2022 10:59

“Also the inference of a romantic relationship with Eoin McGonigal, which I don’t think adds to the story.”

Agreed, but there has to be a gay character now in every drama, even if there is absolutely no suggestion that this person was gay IRL 🙄

I finally watched the rest of the series and it was pretty good. The first two episodes were rather dull, but the scene had to be set, so were necessary. The massacre scenes were grim, but that's war and that shit actually happened, so fair enough.

JimmyGrimble · 13/11/2022 11:26

A quick Google of David Stirling reveals that he was a bit of a right wing nut job. I’m enjoying the series though.

TheOtherBoleynGirls · 13/11/2022 13:39

Theres quite a bit of discussion in the original book about whether Mayne was gay but couldn’t be open about it, and which might have been the cause of a lot of his rage and moods.

Still got one episode to watch, got distracted when I realised I’d never watched The North Water so went back and watched that. Still loving it, though wish we’d had a bit more of the little expedition with Randolph Churchill. I did enjoy Mayne shooting at the new French troops for “extra motivation”…

I didn’t realise Jack O’Connell is playing Mellors in the new Netflix Lady Chatterley #fansself

AnnaMagnani · 13/11/2022 15:05

If you want to know more about David Stirling, and right-wing nutjob barely covers it, can I recommend Adam Curtis' early documentary series The Mayfair Set which I think has all the episodes on Youtube.

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 16/11/2022 22:36

I've just watched episode 4 (am watching with teen DS (so wish it had slightly less sex)) and bloody Alfie Allen got me again. I've only just recovered from Theon Greyjoy's death in Game of Thrones.

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 16/11/2022 22:40

Also, We Have Ways of Making You Talk, Al Murray's WWII podcast did an interesting episode on Rogue Heroes.

It’s a great show, hope it gets a second series and I am also enjoying the bbc sounds obsessed with podcast so recommend that.

Rhondaa · 17/11/2022 14:34

I wish they'd use a different actor for Paddy. Jack O'connell made him seem unlikeable and when you read all the articles about him he was popular and well respected even if unpredictable and wild.

Cocolapew · 17/11/2022 16:46

Jamie Dornan should have played Paddy, at least he has the accent.
