Has anyone started watching this? I’ve just watched the first episode and found it utterly chilling. It’s been a long time since a TV show has impacted me so much; I felt myself physically recoiling. Excellent acting from both the chap playing Dahmer, and his victim, Tracey.

I'm also enjoying the music too ... a welcome few seconds of distraction!

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 23/09/2022 18:17

I got a bit into episode two and had to turn it off, it was too bleak. I love serial killer stuff usually but it was too tough for me, emotionally. Well done to the makers! I'll give it a try another day.

TidyDancer · 23/09/2022 18:26

I'm not sure how I feel about this tbh. I was planning on watching it but at least one of the families are less than happy about it being made. It's a difficult one.

Mochudubh · 23/09/2022 18:27

I gave up after about 20 mins too but only because I found it slow, dark (as in low light) and the dialogue mumbly. It was like something made by the BBC in their dark, mumbly period about 5 years ago.

I preferred the Nilsen one with David Tennant, even though that was mostly him just sitting there telling his story.

I might give Dahmer another go but fast forward like a PP.

foxlover47 · 23/09/2022 19:08

@tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz it helps I think break up the intensity
I did wonder @TidyDancer if the families are against this

@foxlover47 I saw a clip on Twitter, it was a cousin of one of the victims who was commenting on it. Clearly there's a story to be told and I think everyone can understand the interest but it must be difficult for the families to relive it.

mackthepony · 23/09/2022 21:06

Yeah I won't watch anymore of this. It's too gory.

I prefer documentaries about serial killers, rather than re-enactments.

As a PP said the Den one was better

stillvicarinatutu · 24/09/2022 00:43

I'm on ep 2 .

1 was almost too much. So prolonged.so uncomfortable.

2 is just d of back there ....it's uncomfortable viewing

stillvicarinatutu · 24/09/2022 00:48

Ep 2 is worse than 1 , the police had a chance to save a 14 year old.

dutysuite · 24/09/2022 00:52

I watched the first episode tonight and was feeling extremely anxious, I almost stopped watching it.

queenofarles · 24/09/2022 10:43

I couldn’t get pass the first episode , it made me feel nauseous 😖,

foxlover47 · 24/09/2022 12:00

@TidyDancer I can understand why, it must be so hard and completely devastating to see someone who murdered someone you love become so iconic and receive "fan mail " etc
I don't think I've ever watched anything that has quite bothered me yet sent me down Google after to research the real events

MermaidEyes · 24/09/2022 14:58

I've watched it and really enjoyed it. Bit surprised by everyone who says it's scary and nightmare inducing 😄 Maybe I'm just desensitised after years of reading and watching true crime. Jeffrey Dahmer was one of the first serial killers who really got me interested in true crime when I was a teenager.

Exactly the same here. I’m always a little bit surprised by how much interest anything about Dahmer receives. There are far more horrific serial killers out there - I feel incredibly odd saying that because clearly they are ALL horrific but I wonder what captures peoples imagination so much about Dahmer as opposed to the Toolbox Killers or Dennis Raider for example.

I love Evan Peters. Such an amazing actor. He’s so good in Mare of eastown I think it was with Kate Winslet too. Everyone always links him with American horror story and yes he’s brilliant in that but he’s got a lot more depth to him as an actor.

I think it’s a very good series. Incredibly well researched, even down to the reconstruction of his apartment.

mycatisannoying · 24/09/2022 18:38

I've been binge watching this a bit today. I have no problem with watching stuff like this.
God, what a freak of nature. My heart broke for the kid in episode 2. Imagine being taken back there! Just beyond awful.
I was a bit thrown when I started watching though, as I thought 'oh, but he was supposed to be good-looking'.
Then I realised I'd mixed him up with Ted Bundy Blush
Great acting though.

Penggy · 24/09/2022 19:18

I'm on Episode 2 and had to fast forward most of the end of the episode. It was stressing me out so much that he had a child and the police did nothing and took him back to him, just horrific.

Evans is so creepy

Thank god someone said they didn't find it scary. I was starting to think there is something wrong with me, I don't usually watch gory stuff but I didn't find it too bad. I actually thought it dragged on a bit and was a bit boring in places though.

Whoever said he was supposedly charismatic it was obvious to me that they were acting his character as autistic which he is said to have been. The whole monotone voice thing had me googling to see if he was autistic before the end of the first episode.

whythou111 · 24/09/2022 19:30

@The2Omicronnies okay, not wanting to derail, or be a downer here -but I’ve been thinking about this a lot. I am into creepy disturbing stories to a certain degree, even some true crime, especially podcasts and especially is the crime is in the far distant past.

The thing is there’s something about a very high production value and excellently acted retelling of real life serial killers which feels some how immoral to me. I saw the trailer and though wow, then I thought I really wish they hadn’t made that. I tend to especially feel that way if they have very graphic depictions of the acts of sexual violence in them, I can’t shake the feeling that this has to be arousing an appetite for this sort of thing in someone who’s watching. It also feels like a bit of an exploitation of the victims, especially if the crimes are in living memory and the families are alive to watch people “love” the series and “admire” the depiction of their family member’s death. Do you get that sense watching this series at all? Or would you say it’s actually pretty respectful if grim and horrific

30hoursfreechildcare · 24/09/2022 19:30

I love scary stuff but Ive watched 2 episodes and don't think I can carry on with it.

RoachTheHorse · 24/09/2022 19:50

I got part way through ep 2 and had to stop. I've watched AHS and loads of true crime. Lots of stuff that's violent and horrible. But I think I've had my fill.

Too much awful stuff is going on in the real world. I don't know that I can relive Dahmer right now.

I’ve never read he had autism. He had borderline personality disorder and a psychotic disorder but was found to be sane at trial.

(My son aged 10 has complex autism. I hope this doesn’t become about Dahmer having autism or not).

Friendofdennis · 24/09/2022 20:07

I watched all of episode 1 but 20 minutes in to episode 2 I realised that it was making me too anxious so I’ve abandoned it

The2Omicronnies · 24/09/2022 20:28

I have watched until the end of episode 3 and have made the decision not to watch anymore.

@whythou111 you’re right. It’s easy to forget that this was a reality for the poor victims and their families, and it’s too easy to forget that and think of it as “just another horror story”.

Bemyclementine · 24/09/2022 23:03

I've watched all of it now. I already knew the story, as such, I remember his arrest and the details coming out then.. If you're interested, abd have got past the first 2 episodes, I'd say carry on. The first 2 are the worst, imo.

Amarette · 24/09/2022 23:12

I'm interested in other people's reactions to this. I get super scared at anything and can't watch any horror movies at all but I found this so interesting I didn't find it scary at all. Horrifying yes. But so intriguing as to how someone can behave like this, what he thinks and feels. Perhaps I'm just approaching it in a very analytical rather than emotional way. I really enjoyed the Ted Bundy one as well but that did leave me feeling much more scared when walking places alone etc!
