MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #35): Autumn - season of mists, mellow fruitfulness and Woolly Wookiee oppa

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We sometimes resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or favourite actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Quite Simply The Best 💜
I don’t read anything else on MN and I’ve been on here for 20 years 😱

Rowdy, do you have a link to the gay choir documentary?

100% agree with this!! It's very rare I bother looking at any other threads.

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 22/09/2022 18:02

@JinBhoot sending you virtual friendship vibes across the internet ❤️
Im finding that friend stuff has got a bit weird because we have forgotten how to arrange our social lives post covid. I'm trying to arrange a meet up with 3 friends that I haven't seen for nearly a year and we have ending up having to meet on a Monday day time due to not being free at the same time, due to work and kids stuff rather than exciting social lives

Ridingthegravytrain · 22/09/2022 18:30

I know nothing about Korea or their culture, but I watched singles inferno and was shocked at how different it was from western dating shows. All seemed to be very prim and proper like the relationships in the kdramas I've watched. Does anyone know if this was a true reflection of the dating scene?

Rowdythree · 22/09/2022 18:31

MigsandTiggs · 22/09/2022 17:51

Rowdy, do you have a link to the gay choir documentary?

Unfortunately not, I watched it through the Korean Cultural Centre, it was called Weekends

Andante57 · 22/09/2022 18:37

JinBhoot, sorry you’re feeling low. Would rewatching some of the best scenes from CLOY lift your mood temporarily?

Re. Korean life and society, there’s a bit about that in the exhibition which says that the country changed enormously in a short space of time and some of the older generations found it hard to adapt.
I can sympathise with young people, influenced by K drama, who go there hoping to find the man or woman of their dreams - if I was a few decades younger I’d be tempted to do the same.

Rowdythree · 22/09/2022 19:02

@JinBhoot I'm sorry you are feeling low, modern life can be very isolating. I'd love a friendship group like the Ahjumma's in Reply 1988, sending you a virtual hug ❤️

boatyardblues · 22/09/2022 20:39

The friend I turned has discovered Oh My Venus off her own bat. Several months in she is completely down the rabbit hole. (evil laugh)

I am also sending @JinBhoot soothing back pats and a supply of home cooked side dishes tied up in a cheery yellow satin cloth. It’s hard when your friends aren’t nearby. I think this time of year and the days shortening can be hard too. 💐

Is anyone watching Love in Contract? It has our favourite long haired assassin from 100 days my Prince and Park Min Young. Her gay husband reminds me of a young Dougray Scott, I think it has potential to be good 🙏🤞

MigsandTiggs · 22/09/2022 22:37

@Ridingthegravytrain Have a look at the reddit threads on Singles Inferno, where heated debates ensued on several aspects of Korean dating culture. Asians in general expressed surprise that Westerners were shocked by some of the behaviours/comments in that show. There is a dichotomy between how SKs behave when they are outside Korea and when they are home. Once again, on Quora it was explained that even though they might live with partners when studying abroad, once back home they can't do that because of social/parental expectations. So sexually active in private but not in public. The ritual of official "dating" with couple rings, matching clothes, 100 day anniversary etc probably provides an acceptable cover for a sexual relationship in modern times.

As an aside, Ji-a had to make a public apology for all the fake designer gear she was posting on her vlog while passing it off as original. People even tracked down where she had bought the fake Chanel outfits she wore in Singles Inferno and posted the price online! There is nothing like a pissed off Korean netizen!!!

@Ridingthegravytrain you might find this link useful Burning Sun scandal

I don’t know. There is a exhibition catalogue (is that the right word for the book accompanying the show) which has lots of details, photos and essays.
I’m sure it could be ordered.

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 23/09/2022 10:40

Ko Kyung-pyo's voice is 🤤 in Love in Contract

bettys · 23/09/2022 10:48

I really want PMY to be with long haired assassin & blank faced mystery man to be a serial killer but that’s not going to happen is it?🤷🏻‍♀️ (Love in Contract )
Also want a love interest for gay roommate
