Stranger Things suitable for a 13 year old?

Just a quick question re Stranger Things, would it be okay for an emotionally mature 13 year old to watch?

I'm quite easy going with regards to language but it would be sex scenes or abusive scenes that would be a no for me .

I don't know anything about it. Her friends watch (of course 🙄) it's something I'd quite like to watch with her!

Thank you

My almost 13 year loves this programme. I don't watch it but his dad does.

Morello339 · 17/06/2022 12:15

Season 1,2 and 3, I would say are OK. 4 is dark, I would draw the line there. But I know people feel differently.

EpicMugs · 17/06/2022 12:18

I'm only up to Series 3 but there are limited sex scenes (just two people lying in bed and kissing before the scene cuts, that kind of thing) and they are infrequent. Can't recall seeing any abuse other than the way the scientists originally treat the children (isolation tanks, some brief flashbacks of beatings if I remember right) and some bullying scenes between teenagers.

A fair bit of gore in places.

Again, if I recall correctly it's about the same level of adult material all the way through so you could watch the first episode or so and get a good idea of how mature the whole thing will be.

If I think back to myself at 13, I think I'd have been fine watching this.

Intriguing! I am only halfway through S3.

No sex A bit in series one with Steve and Nancy. But it's not in any way graphic. It's get increasingly violent and gory as the series moves on tho so if your child could
Handle horror like 'it' I'd say it's fine but the last series is particularly horror like. But I'd say 15 certificate horror rather than 18.

Ds is 10 and we watched season 1 with him. We have said he needs to wait till he’s older for the others - but I intend to watch season 2 before him and see if it’s suitable. He was fine with it, so I would think season 1 is fine at least for your 13 year old!

alonglongshot · 17/06/2022 12:38

I ( and I'm 53 ) had to watch the end scene of ep1 series 4 through my fingers. I found that pretty scary.

SchoolNightWine · 17/06/2022 13:19

My 13 year old loves it! Watched the first 3 series by herself, but we're watching series 4 together. I'm hiding behind my hands at some of it, but she's notGrin

Kerrrmieee · 17/06/2022 13:25

Thanks all for the replies. I think we'll start watching it together and see how we go.

I did have to chuckle at adults watching through fingers and kids fine... We watched Jaws last year, and she didn't batt an eyelid - that film left me scarred for years 🤣

Thank you. We shall see how it goes!

Yeah, fine for 13 I’d say. Enjoy it!

My ds is 10 nearly 11. We watched 1,2 & 3. Glad I decided to watch 4 before we allowed him as that was a bit too much.

I've said maybe next year.. but I aren't sure. It's quite a jump from 3 to 4!

Kerrrmieee · 17/06/2022 13:29

And thanks @whenwillthemadnessend it is sex and toxicity / abuse that I don't really want her to be seeing (even though she understands the issues).

Gore is fine. We were watching Casualty years ago and some bloke coughed, burst his stitches and they showed his intestines bursting out 🤣 shouldn't laugh 😕🤣

Ah thanks @AllThingsServeTheBeam I shall keep it in mind. We're not going to binge so she'll probably be married with kids by then 🤣

Not the last series imo.

54isanopendoor · 17/06/2022 13:35

I watched S 1-3 with my Ds (now 17) 1st time around.
My dd, 14, ASD is now watching with me from S1.

She is fine with gore (having watched ER together) and also with limited sex & some tricky social issues (it's amazing what ER covers, & pretty responsibly too, which is why I initially suggested we plough our way through, now on S15...)

greenacrylicpaint · 17/06/2022 13:37

1 and 2 yes. if not easily scared

3 and 5 are definitely for older children. it's quite explicit both in gore and violence

We went to Wales on holiday and once we'd got in and had tea we all stopped up and watch a few episodes a night. I wanted to rewatch 1 to 3 so I could watch 4. DS was excited for 4 so was a bit gutted when I told him it was too much. There was some tourture scenes as well and I think that along with the other scary bits would have been too much for him.

54isanopendoor · 17/06/2022 13:49

Going to have to pre-watch S4 though
(she saw a kid in school watching a bit on their phone & said it was scary)

Kerrrmieee · 17/06/2022 13:49

The general consensus that 4 is too much is fine by me.

We'll see how we go. She's very open and will tell me that it's too much.

Or, I'll decide it's too much!

Thank you

My 13 year old has seen it all and enjoyed it. He started watching at 11 or 12 I think. I've only seen the first 2 series but I can't remember anything very extreme in it. If she doesn't like it, surely she'll just switch off. I would say it's actually a teenage programme made for this age and the rating is just a guideline.

IggyAce · 17/06/2022 14:06

DS is 11 and he’s watched all episodes. He was 10 when I allowed him to watch the series 1 I did check his comprehension after a couple of episodes before allowing him to continue.

How did he find 4? My ds is desperate to carry on but I think it will play on his mind

Season 4 is very dark and I have up after episode 2. Seasons 1 -3 were fine and better imo.

Kerrrmieee · 29/06/2022 11:42

Hi all, just thought I'd update.

We are on season 2, just watched the one where Bob saves the day then gets erm mauled and eaten.

DD thinks it's brilliant and it's nice to have something to watch together, but I did say if this is 2 and it gets worse we may have to review. She was more upset about the cat tbh!

Loving it though, we shall have to see.

No nightmares, worried about going to bed, or lights off which is good.

We went up last night, had a hug and said nn - then she decided to tell me there was a huge spider behind me - cue screaming, dancey hug into opposite room - get off me! (That was me 🤣) it was on the blummin ceiling and only an inch wide.

That was our scariest episode 🤣
