Did anyone see this? So much unseen footage of the Queen's early years. I found it fascinating, especially the Queen's voice over (some edited together from her speeches and her recent voice over for the Platinum Jubilee).

I must put out my bunting!

I enjoyed it.

toomuchlaundry · 29/05/2022 22:36

It was so lovely seeing her relaxed and having fun

yesbutnobut · 29/05/2022 22:37

Excellent viewing.

Her father seemed really good fun and it was obvious that they were a close family.
They also got to live their lives without the media glare that the Royals have today.

Seeing Prince Charles as toddler..he was a normal human being then 😂

gaggiagirl · 29/05/2022 23:02

I really enjoyed it. It was so lovely to see them having fun and being like any other family.

leotardrock · 30/05/2022 08:18

I thought it was amazing!
The footage of George V & Queen Mary was fascinating, you got the real sense of the history of it all and actually what a big deal 70 years on the throne really is!
And the Queen mum looked like great fun.

I found it amazingly moving, especially the queen’s voiceover. We truly won’t see anything like this again in our or our children’s lifetimes. And wasn’t Anne the smiliest baby!!

Inkanta · 30/05/2022 08:44

Oh wow very moving the footage of Elizabeth and her dad (touching his head) - at three quarters of the way through.

Maireas · 30/05/2022 09:58

I thought it was lovely, very charming. George VI was obviously a loving dad and grandad. It was nice to see them all unguarded and natural.
They love their dogs and horses!

I really enjoyed it. Also the wise quotes that she delivered so well. I remember her when she was young. I went to school just a short walk from Buckingham Palace. Our class would be playing rounders in the park when the call would go out “the Queen is coming” and we would run to the side of the road and this lovely young woman with the most beautiful pink complexion would smile and wave at us kids. Also we were going swimming in the Victoria Baths when a shooting brake car stopped to let us cross the road. Sitting in the front was Prince Charles on his Nanny’s lap ( no seat belts then) and as we waved to him he sat there waving back. The chauffeur was in uniform but it was very informal. Prince Charles was a lovely little boy. After the Coronation she toured the country and then the Commonwealth. A film was made of both and we were so proud of our pretty young Queen as she greeted the elderly leaders. While in the UK it became usual for us to cheer dust carts, road cleaners etc as we waited by the roadside.

The early footage of Philip was lovely. When she said, "right at the very end, he had that twinkle in his eye, just like when we first met", I thought it was touching.

@HappydaysArehere - what great memories!

Inkanta · 30/05/2022 10:19

Yes the commentary and wise words from the queen were so poignant and comforting. Have not heard all these hearfelt words from the queen before - so this is an important documentary.

leotardrock · 30/05/2022 11:11

Her absolute devotion to Public Service really shone through!
It was in such contrast to the rhetoric coming from the Govt atm!

Until she was 10, when her grandfather died and then her uncle abdicated, the Queen's father was the Duke of York and it was never expected that he and his daughter would become monarch. Comparisons of coverage of the Queen and her sister should be against the coverage of princesses Beatrice and Eugenie (and even that is tricky as you have to factor in the likelihood that Andrew would have been keener to have his children in the limelight than the Queen's parents were).

They do look like a close family and so sad to see the King waving her off on the trip to Kenya, knowing he may never see her again and what a different life she could come back to.

That was a poignant moment. He knew he was dying.

I wonder if she knew? She probably did.

On one hand not that different to many of us saying goodbye to a parent for what we suspect might be the last time, but on the other hand a million miles away from anyone else's experience.

I loved it. Lovely to see footage of George VI having fun. And what a close family they were.

I understood that he actually died of a pulmonary embolism rather than cancer, and that his death was a real shock as they thought he was recovering.

That's interesting. I saw an interview with his former private secretary who said that he was aware of how critical his illness was, even singing an old Scouting song about reaching the end.
Maybe he thought he had longer. Difficult to know.

You should write these memories down for future generations!
