MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #33): So much good content airing just now our Filthy Noonas’ hearts are fit to burst like squashed frogs on a country road

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We sometimes resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or favourite actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

@boatyardblues isn't it interesting that ultimately Giyeong ended up being the 'soft' one given how she came across for much of the series? Just one of the many many realistic aspects of this drama

polkettle · 29/05/2022 14:00

A happy ending really doesn't have to mean being partnered up after all! This was never a romance drama. It's about them being comfortable in their own skins. I think Kijeong is going to end up happy to be single and that's a great outcome. I'm interested in all the parallels that have been developed throughout the drama and the fact that we have two sets of two sister/one brother siblings makes me wonder if there will be a co-parented child for the Yeoms in the end...

polkettle · 29/05/2022 14:01

Giyeong! (I have a mental block on her name)

Quirkycarrot · 29/05/2022 14:06

Also been thinking that they need to tread carefully with handling the Gu situation otherwise at risk of romanticising the fact that he's an alcoholic. Ok deep breath and I'm almost ready for it

AesopsMables · 29/05/2022 14:20

Watching it at 3pm sharp. Just need to finish it now.
Totally agree with comments about not needing to be in a relationship to be happy or certainly'Liberated'
I fear what that word will mean for Gu though. 🥹

AesopsMables · 29/05/2022 14:22

Oh. I should add that I will feel very pissed off if FL's ex gets away with the 6m Won 😡

Quirkycarrot · 29/05/2022 14:39

@AesopsMables same here!

AesopsMables · 29/05/2022 16:35

Ep 16 not dropped yet!?! We are leaving in an hour to visit friends for the evening. I'm not impressed. Wonder what the delay is? That means I will have to wait for tomorrow 🥲 DH suggestion is I drive not him (it's so his turn) so I can watch it much later. That's not happening as I want 🍷.
Will try again tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile OB had v cute scene with the little girl in the market 💕

polkettle · 29/05/2022 17:27

Aaaaaaaaah. Completely wrong in my predictions but it's a 10 for the series from me. Just a beautiful thing that I will rewatch nuggets of forever.

polkettle · 29/05/2022 18:11

In other news I am reading Book Lovers by Emily Henry and 100 pages in the ML is giving the drunk FL a piggyback home while also sharing a single umbrella so I think we can say author is one of us...

Quirkycarrot · 29/05/2022 18:43

Just finished MLN. Definitely going to be an all time favourite of mine.

(But outside the convenience store at the end, how easy it would have been to have Changhee call out 'Hyung!' and their eyes meet. I will just imagine that it did happen)

JinBhoot · 29/05/2022 21:42

Just about to start ep16 of MLN.

From ep15 this dialogue - I felt it - Youcame back as a different person in just 1.5hrs

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 29/05/2022 22:51

Also just finished MLN . Such a good drama! Really beautiful ❤️

boatyardblues · 29/05/2022 23:07

Another 10/10 for me for My Liberation Notes. What an outstanding drama! Everything about it was wonderful. Their almost mute father giving a barnstorming performance with so few words. I can’t think of a single bum note or performance. Even the mad swivel-eyed eonni had her place. Each of the sibling’s trajectories were compelling. Their enduring friendships with their childhood friends were realistically drawn. I just adored Changhee’s acceptance of the path that suddenly unfolded before him. Top 3 for me.

And the enigmatic Gu. 👌

AesopsMables · 30/05/2022 10:02

Just finished MLN. It didn't disappoint and I agree it's 10/10.

JinBhoot · 30/05/2022 10:46

What a treat MLN was. In the end (to my surprise), brother’s journey is my favourite.
Finale was satisfying too, really enjoyed watching this drama. Took me a while (google) to understand Mr. Gu’s end and coin metaphor.

Which drama will cover this time slot now?

boatyardblues · 30/05/2022 10:50

Can you give me a clue or a link jin?

Coin meaning. But lots of good threads on Twitter to nerd out on/agree/disagree with if you're so inclined.

I can't open the link Pol
My understanding is that whilst he is with FL he will be lucky always?

polkettle · 30/05/2022 12:30

Oh annoying Aesops. I recommend losing a working day to going on Twitter and searching hashtag #myliberationnotes
This is the bird reference.

Up there with My Mister as an all time great. No surprise there.

boatyardblues · 30/05/2022 12:53

Wow. That is wonderful. I expected nothing less of the writers. MLN is a total class act.

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 30/05/2022 12:54

This is genius. I felt throughout the series there was religious iconography etc (some more overt than others I.e. the billboard) but this articulates it perfectly.
