DI RAY. ITV 9pm mon to Thur - tv pace. NO SPOILERS

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/05/2022 18:22

looks good. On 4 nights starting tomorrow mon 2nd may

DI Ray is a new ITV crime drama that has been described as "fresh, relevant and thought-provoking". The four-part series is written by Line of Duty actress and screenwriter Maya Sondhi and is produced by Jed Mercurio's HTM Television. Jed serves as executive producer for the new series.

The four part series will follow DI Rachita Ray, played by Bend It Like Beckham and The Blacklist star Parminder Nagra. The synopsis is as follows: "Rachita achieves the promotion she’s been waiting for when she’s asked to join a homicide investigation.

However, on her first day she’s told the murder to which she’s been assigned is a ‘Culturally Specific Homicide.’ Rachita’s heart sinks – she suspects she’s a ‘token appointment’, chosen for her ethnicity rather than her ability.

"Never one to shy away from a challenge, Rachita sticks to the case, determined to both find the killer and call out the obvious biases her colleagues are bringing to the investigation. And it’s far from easy. The case isn’t a run-of-the-mill murder; it involves delving deep into the dangerous world of organised crime."

Who's in the cast of DI Ray?
Parminder Nagra leads the cast as the lead role of DI Rachita Ray, a Birmingham based police officer who is originally from Leicester.

The Tower and Gentleman Jack star Gemma Whelan stars as DCI Kerry Henderson, who clashes with DI Ray as she believes she's been given a "bump up" too soon.

Speaking about this, Gemma revealed: "In Kerry’s view, everyone else has worked their way up through the ranks and earned their place in the team, whereas Rachita has had a ‘have a go hero moment’ as Kerry sees it, and hasn’t earned her job title."

Thanks
im somewhat over it and I feel the sea change since blm. But blimey it’s been a long time coming.

Think that’s why I found this an interesting watch

RampantIvy · 06/05/2022 13:35

Thank you for your point of view @Rummikub. When ealier posters thought that the racsim portrayed wasn't realistic I felt I couldn't comment because I am white British. As it was written by Maya Sondhi I assumed that she probably used some of her personal expereinces of racism in the script.

SpindleInTheWind · 06/05/2022 13:55

I thought the situation with the front desk PC Knott was bang on. I'm glad I watched all four episodes.

Rummikub · 06/05/2022 14:00

@RampantIvy

It’s one of the reasons I love mn as can see different views. And offer a different pov which I (probably wouldn’t do in real life.

parents taught me to keep head down and don’t speak up to avoid backlash!)

Gilmorehill · 06/05/2022 14:51

I didn’t understand why she was treated so
badly in the end. It was a depressing ending. It was great though to have a writer from
an ethnic minority use her experiences to help understand more about racism.

BIWI · 06/05/2022 15:40

I think they had to find some way of getting rid of her, because she was only brought in as a token to start with. They never expected her to do what she did.

Worse, in solving the original crime, she also exposed not only another police officer, but a whole potential layer of corruption in the police force/Organised Crime Group. So now she has publicly embarrassed her white, male superiors.

It's a bit like when whistleblowers get the push, I think.

Rummikub · 06/05/2022 18:31

Ah yes that makes sense.

RampantIvy · 06/05/2022 08:53

I got the impression that her team had started to accept her by the end when they were all having a drink in the pub.

I didn't like the ending. I hope there is a series 2 where she gets a chance to redeem herself.

I checked and was told that there's no current plans for another series but to check social medial accounts and also on the ITV Hub. 🌹

purpleme12 · 09/05/2022 23:03

I liked the programme
But the ending really pissed me off.
And yes I found it sad

I would have rather she'd shown more emotion but I get that's the point of her character

BIWI · 10/05/2022 08:55

But the bit where she was dancing in the pub with Tony Khatri was emotional - she really was letting her hair down and being much more 'herself'.

I thought that was a great contrast with how she felt she had to behave in her professional role/life.

purpleme12 · 10/05/2022 09:02

I didn't say there was no emotion at all. There obviously was.

But her character was meant to be quite stoic I think. I would have preferred less stoicness, if that is even the right word in this context

BIWI · 10/05/2022 09:03

Well it's a word now! Grin

I think it demonstrated just how careful she felt she had to be in the situation she was dropped into - not only because of her ethnicity, but also knowing that she was really there just as a token.

angstridden2 · 23/05/2022 13:09

Not about racism but watching police series recently (apart from Midsomer Murders and the like) I’m not surprised people leave and the real life clear up rate is so poor when all the bosses seem to be pretty unpleasant, even the lovely Gemma Whelan is horrible in this!

RaraRachael · 23/05/2022 21:07

We've ploughed through two episodes. OH really likes it but I'm finding it slow and dull. I wish they'd stop saying somebody would "reach out"

happygolurkey · 24/05/2022 16:23

I really enjoyed this. there were a few dips here and there where i was less into it but it kept pulling me back in. Got stronger as it went on. I really liked the main character and thought her acting was superb. Also loved the Tony Khatri character.
