Blondeshavemorefun · 01/05/2022 18:22

looks good. On 4 nights starting tomorrow mon 2nd may

DI Ray is a new ITV crime drama that has been described as "fresh, relevant and thought-provoking". The four-part series is written by Line of Duty actress and screenwriter Maya Sondhi and is produced by Jed Mercurio's HTM Television. Jed serves as executive producer for the new series.

The four part series will follow DI Rachita Ray, played by Bend It Like Beckham and The Blacklist star Parminder Nagra. The synopsis is as follows: "Rachita achieves the promotion she’s been waiting for when she’s asked to join a homicide investigation.

However, on her first day she’s told the murder to which she’s been assigned is a ‘Culturally Specific Homicide.’ Rachita’s heart sinks – she suspects she’s a ‘token appointment’, chosen for her ethnicity rather than her ability.

"Never one to shy away from a challenge, Rachita sticks to the case, determined to both find the killer and call out the obvious biases her colleagues are bringing to the investigation. And it’s far from easy. The case isn’t a run-of-the-mill murder; it involves delving deep into the dangerous world of organised crime."

Who's in the cast of DI Ray?
Parminder Nagra leads the cast as the lead role of DI Rachita Ray, a Birmingham based police officer who is originally from Leicester.

The Tower and Gentleman Jack star Gemma Whelan stars as DCI Kerry Henderson, who clashes with DI Ray as she believes she's been given a "bump up" too soon.

Speaking about this, Gemma revealed: "In Kerry’s view, everyone else has worked their way up through the ranks and earned their place in the team, whereas Rachita has had a ‘have a go hero moment’ as Kerry sees it, and hasn’t earned her job title."

OK here we go again ...

KillingMeDeftly · 03/05/2022 21:46

Ooh is her boyfriend dodgy?

lazymum99 · 03/05/2022 21:49

Is that her boyFriend on the cctv footage? And did he attack her in the bath?

SpindleInTheWind · 03/05/2022 21:59

Well that has really picked up. Harrowing stuff at the end.

KillingMeDeftly · 03/05/2022 22:00

I thought it looked a bit like him on the footage and he turned up at her flat most conveniently after the attack 🤔

Glad I stuck with it. Today's episode was a vast improvement on yesterday's!

burnoutbabe · 03/05/2022 22:04

I think it's good, nice to see a different take on the police drama. I am wondering, like ray, whether things are being said /done due to her race. Which we don't really see much on tv. Micro-aggression I think?

But it's never quite clear so nothing can be said, it's well done in that respect.

(The mum's comments at the dinner party when she abruptly stopped herself did example)

cheeseisthebest · 03/05/2022 22:10

I like it!

Forestdweller11 · 03/05/2022 22:15

I think it's too obvious that fiancee is a baddy.

They all seem to drop balls don't they though. The guy with the cctv at the petrol station and then the woman hadn't checked something (can't remember what! ) .

Forestdweller11 · 03/05/2022 22:18

Think the Sargent is dodgy. Is he a single parent? Fiance's parents did not look like his parents!

whimsicalwillow · 03/05/2022 23:22

Have watched it all - no spoilers! Stick with it, it's worth watching.
My home city looks bloody good tooSmile

SpindleInTheWind · 04/05/2022 01:46

Yes I agree it's worth sticking with. It is very good in the 2nd half.

willstarttomorrow · 04/05/2022 19:56

I have watched it all and found it really tiresome. Like all ITV drama's the trailer promises so much, they involve respected actors, writers and producers yet never deliver. It is predictable and so unsubtle. The premise is good in that it examines racism in the police force and wider society but it executed so clumsily that it is like a school production. At least it is only a few episodes, I easily got on with other things and came back and I had not missed anything or could quickly catch up!

maryandtrees · 04/05/2022 21:20

I watched episode 2 and thought it was better. Half way though episode 3 and it’s shit.

BIWI · 04/05/2022 22:04

I'm actually really enjoying this! Just watched ep 3 and really looking forward to the conclusion tomorrow.

youngestisapsycho · 04/05/2022 22:09

I knew Martin was dodgy!

BIWI · 04/05/2022 22:12

Yes, I said that to DH yesterday, but he dismissed me!

Forestdweller11 · 04/05/2022 22:15

Looks.like I was wrong!

Can't wait for tomorrow . Having to watch episode 4 on ITV hub now ...

Hoolahulahoop · 04/05/2022 22:18

I'm loving this. The actress playing DI Ray is so likeable. Knew Martin was dodge since early on. Can't wait for tomorrow

SpindleInTheWind · 04/05/2022 22:19

Yes, the DI Ray actor is good - she really grew on me.

RampantIvy · 04/05/2022 22:26

I'm really enjoying it. I don't understand what is so "tiresome" or "shit" about it TBH.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/05/2022 22:40

I’m glad you all are enjoying

maybe I need to give it another go

@RampantIvy I am guessing this is directed at me. The references to racism are just so heavy handed, unsubtle and frequent I felt insulted as a viewer in that I could not be trusted to pick up a more nuanced dialogue as an intelligent adult. The plot is cliched and nothing to write home about and an accomplished actor in the main role is left with an cliched plot and poor dialogue. One of the professional or personal relationships are believable. I was recently travelling for a few weeks and downloaded the original Killing and also Happy Valley to re-watch in the evening. ITV keeps churning out this rubbish which is incomparable to really good, original drama available elsewhere.

Xmasbaby11 · 04/05/2022 23:13

I agree the racism focus is very strong with so many scenes involving micro aggressions. None of them are unbelievable on their own, but one scene following another destroys credibility and I do feel like it's way too heavy handed.

Felt like it was too obvious Martyn being a baddie. It was enough he was controlling in the relationship.

I don't find DD Ray a strong enough character and she lacks authority for the role she's in. I agree it's another ITV drama that overpromises.

But I am enjoying it to an extent and going to watch the final one tomorrow!

RampantIvy · 04/05/2022 23:21

Clearly I am not a TV critic so I didn't notice most of the points you have made @willstarttomorrow, or maybe I am just easier to please. I am really enjoying this, although we both thought early on that the boyfriend was a bad 'un.

It was written by Maya Sondhi, so it is possible that she may have written about her own experiences of racism, so I don't feel qualified to comment there.

maryandtrees · 05/05/2022 08:07

RampantIvy · 04/05/2022 22:26

I'm really enjoying it. I don't understand what is so "tiresome" or "shit" about it TBH.

I didn’t find the acting strong. The lead actress was fabulous in ER but I didn’t rate her in this. I found a lot of the acting from all the cast quite wooden. I didn’t find the story gripping as I have done in series such as Line of Duty. While I won’t give anything away, I hate when ITV have loads of adverts and then cram so much in the last 10 minutes of the last episode.

In the end, it was ok watching. Nothing else was on. I wasn’t gripped. It was just ok.
