Anyone watching? I haven't got round to Call My agent but I thought I'd give this a go.

So I know it's been made by the team behind twentytwelve and W1A but literally the first 5 mins had the same speech patterns and manner right down to the PA having the unspoken crush on the boss like Olivia Coleman and Hugh bonneville.

There is an arch campy young assistant just like in W1A

Honestly is Call my agent like this? I can't imagine it is?

I don't dislike it, it just doesn't seem too
original.

It’s more or less the same storyline and characterisation as Call My Agent, but CMA is a million times more chic and stylish. Have watched a few episodes of Ten Percent and it is a very poor imitation.

thefemaleJoshLyman · 29/04/2022 07:10

Call My Agent is amazing.

This was the same storyline but based in London. (I wonder if it will diverge at all). So it fell a little bit flat for me. I might go back and watch the original.

One funny thing was naming the dog Mathias!

Mooserp · 29/04/2022 07:52

I've watched the first couple of episodes. It's ok but not a patch on the original which just has so much more style. And the characters don't seem as likeable - particularly the assistant with the crush.

There's also an Indian version of Call My Agent, which has identical storylines to the original. Why bother making these?

Notonthestairs · 29/04/2022 08:51

I've just started watching CMA (I'm forever behind the times!) - I love all the characters. Might not bother with 10% if it's not as good.

Mooserp · 29/04/2022 09:10

Was there an equivalent of the Tim McInnerny character in the original? I can't remember.

IcedPurple · 29/04/2022 09:10

I could understand taking the concept and transferring it to another setting, but why just remake the same series which is already freely available on Netflix? With the same characters and plot lines?

For an audience that wouldn't watch the original?

I guess they hope with these remakes that it'll prove as successful as the American Office.

I don't really see this remake being a big hit.

I don't think people are 'scared' by subtitles in the way they used to be.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 29/04/2022 11:46

I watched the first two episodes last night. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, but it doesn’t have that x factor that CMA has.

The madly in love with ‘Matthias’ assistant in 10 percent is so rubbish compared to Noémie. I love bonkers Noémie.

Misha – bit dull. But then so is Camille her French counterpart.

I can’t remember the name of the character who plays English Andréa. But ya know, Andréa is my fave so I was never going to be convinced.

They've done well with attracting big names to do their 'turn'. I thought Kelly McDonald, Olivia Williams and Helena Bonham Carter were v enjoyable. I see Dominic West coming up so will look forward to that.

But it’s just missing all that Parisian zhuzh and glamour and the gallic shrugging.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 29/04/2022 11:50

Jean Gabin's English counterpart was splendid!

PortiaFimbriata · 29/04/2022 11:57

It's not just about the subtitles - although that's always going to cut out a large chunk of the viewing public. It's about the cultural references. Something like CMA will play on French viewers' shared cultural knowledge and their existing perceptions of the famous guest stars. English viewers who've never heard of Sandrine Kiberlaine or Line Renaud are going to miss something, especially in the first series which was entirely aimed at French audiences and mostly didn't have guest stars with an international profile.

I suppose part of the appeal of Dix pour cent for french people is that the 'stars' are played by actual french famous actors. But I don't think it necessarily takes away from the overall enjoyment of the show, remakes for me normally always fall flat

sansucre · 29/04/2022 12:17

Watched a little more and am on episode 7 now. There’s a few tweaks to both the storyline and characters, but no real changes. Am still at a loss as to why they’re remade this as with each episode, the differences between this and Call My Agent grow greater still (and not in a good way).

It is impossible to watch this and not compare it to the French version - possibly a series for those who have not watched the original.

HappyCup · 29/04/2022 12:31

I stuck with it (there’s only 8 or so episodes) and liked it overall. It was a good ‘I’m at home ill and need something on the TV’ show.

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 29/04/2022 13:50

I watched the first one last night and just couldn't warm to it. It's so lacking compared to the original. It feels like a very poor imitation.

Yes that's true. We may have heard of Juliette Binoche or Isabelle Huppert but most of the guest stars will be pretty much unknown to most people outside the Franophonie. I think the fact that the French speaking celeb world is much smaller than the English speaking equivalent kind of adds to the charm of 'Call My Agent'. You feel like you've been invited into an intimate little world where everyone knows everyone.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 29/04/2022 15:31

I don't think I recognised any of the guest stars in CMA until half way through series 2. Might have been Isabelle Adjani's episode.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 29/04/2022 15:32

After that it seemed all the French actors who'd done a spell in Hollywood started to appear.

Oddbutnotodd · 30/04/2022 09:17

Shame they haven’t changed the plot line. Didn’t recognise the famous French actors in the original series but I was swept along by the surroundings and general tone.
It’s interesting that people think subtitles reduce audience numbers but that didn’t stop Squidgame.
Only watching the first episode now.
The office itself seems a bit shoddy.

I think it will go down well but definitely helps if you haven’t seen the original.

over2021 · 01/05/2022 13:09

Just finished it- enjoyed every episode!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 01/05/2022 13:15

i loved call my agent, but initially had no clue about the famous stars.
i might give 10 % a go but am not confident i will enjoy it

MrsLargeEmbodied · 01/05/2022 13:23

i spose it's a bit like Extras?
with real TV stars/film stars?

might give it a go
i also loved Noemie, and Gabriel, and Nicholas

Andylion · 01/05/2022 17:49

the PA having the unspoken crush on the boss like Olivia Coleman and Hugh bonneville.

She was really irritating, spoke exactly the way OC’s character in Twenty Twelve did. The storyline was taken directly from CMA but, although Noemie was somewhat flustered, if I recall, she was nothing like this.

I really enjoyed the first episode and the cast was great. However, once it became apparent that they were doing exactly the same plots, I didn’t see the point of it.

I recommend the original, but for those who can’t read subtitles, Ten per cent looks worthwhile.
