I've just binge watched it and wish I hadn't! It's very slow. Michelle Dockery is great in it but gets nowhere near as much air time as Sienna Miller. The book was much better I think, quite disappointed as I was really looking forward to it.

portionplate · 16/04/2022 07:34

I enjoyed it. Haven't read the book though

portionplate · 16/04/2022 07:43

I was surprised by the lack of emotion, crying & fighting between James & Sophie when his betrayals were exposed. Is that how poshos just react to scandals?

Panicmode1 · 16/04/2022 09:13

I binged it yesterday....the book is much better. Too much style over substance (as per with Netflix I find).

TinyPrettyThing · 16/04/2022 20:00

I watched this over two evenings and liked it - I hadn't read the book but have just ordered it.

Tronkmanton · 16/04/2022 20:26

I started watching but lost interest. The two main characters couldn’t act their way out of a cardboard box and it was incredibly slow. I remembered that I had read the book, the book was much better….

Franklin12 · 16/04/2022 21:50

Agree it was slow and didn’t like the ending.

Lavenderlid · 16/04/2022 22:35

I've watched it all in a day so I must have been enjoying it!

StrawberryPot · 17/04/2022 12:12

Also watched it over 24 hours. Acting was quite wooden from 3 main characters; dialogue was contrived in a lot of places (nobody's that articulate when they're in emotional turmoil).

But on the whole enjoyed it!

Praxoulla007 · 17/04/2022 12:29

I thought Michelle Dockery was brilliant. Sienna Miller not so much. The Oxford uni party exposures are pretty much true to life in my experience.

I enjoyed it because it is pretty relevant to what is going on today. That certain people in government can get away with their awful behaviour simply because of where they went to uni, who they know and their fortunate positions in life.

Stravaig · 17/04/2022 12:51

I thought the casting was a bit odd. Most of the main characters seemed like lookalikes for other, better-known actors. Add the glossy presentation, and it felt like Netlix intended a starrier cast, who said no. (I kept wondering about this, not great really.) Michelle Dockery is fantastic though, she does multi-layered characters ever so well.

This.

I didn't find it slow. I liked the fact it wasn't just about the plot but about the reactions of the characters to the events that were unfolding. I was interested in how the past informed the present in terms of the sense of inviolability of the Libertines.

The funny thing is that ten years ago it might have seemed ridiculously implausible. Now, not so much.

I kept wanting to scream at Sophie for doing the Tory wife stand by her man routine (never sure how they can actually stomach this) but delighted to see the worm turning eventually (although that bit is the least plausible part of the plot, apart from Kate actually prosecuting her rapist, which was ridiculous in real life but essential to the overall plot).

Rupert Freind is a bit disappointing, I loved him in Homeland, I'm quite enjoying it though

Pennox · 17/04/2022 13:04

Hmmmm the dialogue was terrible I thought!

Stravaig · 17/04/2022 13:06

I also disliked the way they centred the politician and his wife onscreen. The experience of the rape victims is peripheral. I wish they'd found a way to subvert that, or at least draw attention to it.

ginislife · 17/04/2022 13:13

I watched it back to back on Friday and enjoyed it - but I don't think I've read the book. I found the casting of the young and older Holly odd as Michelle Dockery is way taller than her younger persona and she wouldn't have grown !!

grotsnags · 17/04/2022 13:19

It did a good job of demonstrating how the privileged are blind to their privilege & the security it gives you but in real life the privileged very rarely get their comeuppance.

BlindyPeakers · 17/04/2022 19:34

I think Sophie and James'amazing house and her wardrobe stole the show slightly!

cherrypiepie · 17/04/2022 20:01

I quite like it for the inside parliament, chambers, courtroom, privilege life of those in power and how so far removed from the hoi polloi. I like legal dramas set in the uk. Some of the locations are lovely. Wonder how true it is (suspect it is very close to the bone) Michelle dockery is great. Seen 2.5 hours. Not gripping but looking forward to finishing ep 3

Blossomtoes · 17/04/2022 20:09

I loved the book and was surprised how much I enjoyed this, it exceeded my expectations. I watched it over two evenings and was completely engaged by it. As a pp said, it would have seemed far fetched ten years ago, now it’s entirely plausible.

bagsforlife20 · 17/04/2022 21:07

I enjoyed it but would say it’s a 5/10. Wouldn’t rewatch it and found it a bit cheesy. I haven’t read the books, so felt like the story was all a bit coincidental and the twists were predictable. Something was off.

SueblueNZ · 17/04/2022 22:39

I agree that the casting of the young actor as Holly just didn't make sense.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 17/04/2022 23:04

All the plot twists were really telegraphed. I guessed all of them way before they happened. I enjoyed it though.

Hels20 · 18/04/2022 00:02

Really enjoyed it - even though far fetched. The “twist” was ridiculous. Pretty sure others would have guessed before the “reveal”.

Agree with a PP that the Oxford scenes were true to life.

Didn’t think it was slow and it maintained my interest. Pleased that Sienna (at least in this) had not succumbed to Botox.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 18/04/2022 08:59

I was at Cambridge in the 90s but so much of the language in the party scenes was familiar. I think I'd wiped some of that stuff from my memory.
