A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t actively promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, writers, film and music when the mood takes us. We have some ARMY (BTS fans) among our regulars. Some of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others, admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We sometimes resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or favourite actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

It’s OK FedUp. We all know you have a major thing about Mr Gu and anyone unwise enough to get in between the two of you if he materialised at a kdrama addicts’ meet would be taking their life in their hands. 🤣

😁😁😁😁

I like Mr Gu, but I LOVE Boaty ❤️

AesopsMables · 09/05/2022 18:57

I'm absolutely gobsmacked. It's only today that I've realised Lee Min Ki is ML from BTIML🤯

Feeling bereft this week as have nothing to watch. My commute is going to be very boring unless I can find something tonight....

boatyardblues · 09/05/2022 19:08

That’s how I feel about the middle of the week Aesops. Tumbleweed.

Quite. I’ve taken to going to the pub with friends instead, so not a complete disaster. 😄

AesopsMables · 09/05/2022 21:52

I've found a new soap opera ! Complete with shakey sets, screaming Omma's and dysfunctional family situation comedy.
Our Gon Soon.
My guilty pleasure for the next few weeks hopefully as 61episodes 🤓

anonacfr · 10/05/2022 08:07

Ok so I am on episode 5 of Uncanny Counter and I am loving it!
Nice to see a non romantic show and it gets better by the episode.
They are such an adorable rag tag dysfunctional family...

MusiqueAutomatique · 10/05/2022 18:39

Anyone else at the korean translation talk? The main speaker helped put 'kdrama' in the OED! I'm v impressed.

MusiqueAutomatique · 10/05/2022 18:51

boatyardblues · 08/05/2022 20:27

I'm saving MLN for later this week.

How??? What’s the secret to your willpower? Are you one of those people that still has some of their Easter chocolate left in July?

I can only watch one episode of my solo kdramas a day because of having children who are under ten. I expect in a few years when they are teenagers and want nothing to do with me that I will be whipping through the episodes as well!

I did manage to watch one of last weekend's MLN, I loved the exploding frogs bit too. Surely there are memes of it by now?!

bettys · 10/05/2022 20:41

Just dropping in to say that I am really rather enjoying Woori The Virgin on Viki. Sung Hoon is on splendid naughty CEO form although they haven't managed to work in a swimming scene yet - though I am only halfway through the first episode so there is still time 😂

boatyardblues · 10/05/2022 21:43

No Sung Hoon drama is complete without a swimming scene. I’ll check it out. 👍

I’ve not watched the US version Jane the Virgin so I’d be interested to know how faithfully it follows the US script/arc.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 10/05/2022 22:05

Complete aside, but has anyone else noticed a recent and marked shift to “nam-chin” and “eo-chin” instead of namja chingu and eoja chingu, even when older adults are speaking? It’s not all teen speak? It seems to have caught on quickly. I wondered if SK has the equivalent of an Academie Française for Korean that dictates usage and permits new words to be officially added to the dictionary.

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 10/05/2022 22:16

OK, seeing as I’m on an uninterrupted roll, here’s a line from Woori the Virgin which tickled me:

”Kang Jae is your unicorn. Hurry up and ride him quickly!”

I like Woori’s writing sunbae. She speaks sense.

OP posts:
bettys · 10/05/2022 23:05

I haven’t seen Jane The Virgin either, so I’m just going to credit kdrama for all the fun interweaving of tropes. And possibly the most awkward proposal scene ever.

boatyardblues · 10/05/2022 23:47

Thanks for flagging it Betty. I’ve nearly finished ep 2. It is GLORIOUS! Makjang-a-go-go. I very much doubt the Americans had this much fun with the story. It’s totally floating my boat. In fact, I haven’t sounded the Boat-signal for a while but I think it’s called for here. ⛵️⛵️⛵️I also really, really want Hoon’s purple sports car with the red soft top. 🙏 Ideally with Sung still in it. I reckon he could teach me how to do tumble turns (and, no, that’s not a euphemism for jdrama sordidness).

OP posts:
boatyardblues · 11/05/2022 00:29

I’m glad there were only 2 episodes. I’d have still been up at 2am. The scheming MIL is awful. The scheming nearly ex-wife, likewise. The prim nearly fiancé is perfectly cast - he was similarly asexual in Live. It’s harder to buy him as a cop, but compromises had to be made somewhere. 🤷‍♀️ Oh yes, Chairman - run of the mill, cookie cutter chaebol bastard. Kindly matriarch? Check! Slightly wonky mother-daughter relationship? Check. Who’s the Daddy sub-plot? Check! All the elements are in place for a romping potboiler. I could not be happier chingus! And on that uplifting note I am off to bed. 🙌
