A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t actively promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, writers, film and music when the mood takes us. We have some ARMY (BTS fans) among our regulars. Some of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others, admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We sometimes resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or favourite actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

If anyone is feeling sad from all the finishing dramas this week, I highly recommend the little Japanese reality show Old Enough. 20 episodes, 10 minutes each. The perfect antidote 😊

I've finished FLAW, I liked the ending, it's just a shame that most of the series was such a misery fest.

What has happened to all the fun K dramas!? I want more like Business Proposal

Thanks for the nice new thread Boaty! Have your Internet issues resolved themselves?

Bea I am sad but unsurprised to learn the meteorology parts of FLAW are tosh.

I'm settling down to watch 25/21 but I have three episodes to go and I don't think I'll finish it tonight. I will probably then put off finishing Business Proposal because I really don't want it to end.

I dropped my phone in a rockpool earlier, I hope it survives. I'm burying it in porridge as I don't have any rice. I don't even know if porridge is an effective dessicant but needs must.

Finished 25/21 . I did have a few moments of frustration that certain things were not revealed. But overall a good ending 💖

Good straightforward ending to FLAW. Loved drunk Mr Penguin. Also liked the examination of women's careers and difficult choices throughout the series. Remained essentially unconvinced that PMY and SK were a match.
There's so much great stuff in 25/21 Betty's both in terms of writing and performances (I have massive girl crush on Kim Tae-Ri - actually all of them) that it's got to be 👍 but let's just say the show plays it straight. It's about the journey not the destination.

I agree.
It seems to be a thing with Kdramas that they start off quite light hearted then get darker or sadder. FLAW, Rookie Cops and Mr Queen spring to mind.
Nonetheless FLAW’s ending was very sweet. It was the first episode where Yuja actually smiled.

I haven't gone past episode 13 of FLAW. If I skip to final will it be a big loss?

😢 I just finished 25/21 and am not happy at all! 😢 I don’t want to spoil it for anyone yet to watch the finale… but it definitely wasn’t the ending I wanted!

@Andante57 - yes! I feel like I’m tired of shows that start lighthearted and fun, then end up miserable. Maybe not so much 25/21. But the Kim WooBin (uncontrollably fond?) one - which was so jolly and high jinks, then ended up an absolute sob fest and there are several other ones where a lovely romance ends up going horribly wrong. I feel like life is hard and depressing enough without kdramas depressing me too. 😢

It won't be a big loss, there are a few of funny/sweet moments with the 🐧 couple but you won't be missing much else.

I’m all caught up, finally!

25/21 - a mixed outcome but probably a more truthful one. Some lovely bits in there and I adore NJH and Kim Tae Ri.

FLAW - a good outcome all round.

Nice finale cameo for Search WWW FedUp 😁
My main problem with watching final episode was spending too much time waiting for elaborate twist reveal rather than just enjoying the flow. Can't work out how much I was actually played by the writer/show and how much by my own wilful descent down fevered Netizen rabbit holes.

Barro rules! 😁

Yes, as said upthread, this one was all about the journey, not the destination.

And the friendship between Hee-do and Yu-rim was actually the most satisfying part. I loved those two.

I was still expecting something right until the end.

For anyone who hasn't seen 25/21, I would stop at Episode 9. To me, that was perfect.

@boatyardblues - yes probably a truthful ending, but it felt unsatisfactory that we didn’t see what their lives were like now. I think I misread the series and it’s actually meant to be about the development and growth of the daughter, but I didn’t really engage much with that storyline as we so quickly moved on from her. 🤷‍♀️

@sakura06 - yes! I thought the bit after the credits, or the changing job (orchestrated by her mother to get him to SK!) or their tearful interview was going to lead… somewhere. Even something about who the husband/father was (did she settle for Cutie Pie?), what her life was like now or if she was still good friends with the gang would have been more satisfactory for me.
