Mr Selfridge?

gogohm · 01/03/2022 21:44

Was about to say good karma hospital too. For more comedic we are currently watching Agatha Raisin.

dreamygirl25 · 01/03/2022 21:48

Watching. I need something too.
Boardwalk empire was quite good but not really like downton/call the midwife as its about gangsters.

Madmen also similar 50s/60s feel which might hit the spot. Got a bit silly towards the end but great insight to life in those days in America!

What about the marvellous Mrs maisel? Prime.

Id love something like call the midwife. Was gutted whenbibsat down for it on Sunday and realised last one was last week!

titchy · 01/03/2022 22:02

Good karma is on itv. Four series.

Wordlewobble · 01/03/2022 22:11

From a previous era maybe try the Durrells or All Creatures Great and Small. No idea which channel they are on now sorry.

For Community Nursing family theme easy watching but more recent but still older UK series maybe try Where the Heart is or in a Midwifery more modern day theme try Offspring a very funny Australian series.

MangyInseam · 01/03/2022 22:49

I was also going to say All Creatures Great and Small. Or maybe The English Game?

It's tricky because CTM is both generally positive but, at least at one time, could be quite stark in the realities it depicted. Most shows tend to lean more one way or the other.

Or maybe The Royal would be a similar feel? The first season in particular is a bit low budget but if you follow it along the stories are actually very of the time and compelling.

Doc Martin
All Creatures Great and Small

PriamFarrl · 01/03/2022 22:53

I feel your pain. I rewatched all of it over lockdown, followed by Downton. I’m now watching Father Brown which is different entirely but ‘Sunday evening’ level of TV.

AllLopsided · 01/03/2022 23:07

DH and I recently watched and enjoyed all 9 series of Foyle's War (ITV) having missed it when it was on (2000s). Tip: download them so you don't have to sit through the ads! We also like Father Brown and think it deserves more prominence than it's daytime slot (though as everything is on catch-up it doesn't really matter). And watched Doc Martin last year and the original All Creatures Great and Small (I was about 10) - seems like I've found my people!

jay55 · 01/03/2022 23:30

Is House of Elliot on BritBox or anywhere?
That would get my vote, women lead, lots of social history.

DowntonCrabby · 01/03/2022 23:32

Lilies (I can only find it on YouTube) is also written by Heidi Thomas.

headlock · 01/03/2022 23:36

@Wordlewobble the Durrells is so good.

Catcrazy83 · 01/03/2022 23:54

The gilded age, set in New York but oldie worldie, big houses/servants, or new all creatures great and small

StarbucksSmarterSister · 02/03/2022 01:45

"A Place to Call Home". On Amazon Prime or the Drama channel app.

Glamorous and glossy, about prejudice and social change in the 50s. Working class nurse with a mysterious past meets rich Aussie landowner.

It's one of the very best 20th century period dramas I've seen and is totally addictive .

A place to call home

Currently watching a place to call home seems good so far xx

Land Girls?

EthelTheAardvark · 02/03/2022 18:32

More comedy-based but fairly gentle - Shakespeare and Hathaway.

BirdOnTheWire · 02/03/2022 18:38

Ah I love everything mentioned on here except CTM.
Good Karma Hospital is lovely and A Place to Call home is one of my all time favourite series.

The Coroner is good, the one with Claire Goose not the American one. Sunday evening tele.

sluj · 02/03/2022 18:40

I got addicted to "place to call home" during lockdown, I don't know how it passed me by before. I'm missing CTM too though

waltzingparrot · 02/03/2022 18:40

High Seas and Cable Girls on Netflix (Spanish with English dubbing)

AnneElliott · 02/03/2022 18:41

The gilded age on sky is also good. Written by Julian Fellowes so some similarities to Downton.
