Awww latests episode was so good tonight! Def resonates with me and DH when kids were young, and we went through tough times. It’s hard and they portrayed that so well. We are all fine now but could just have easily went like Kate and lovely Toby. Team Toby for me though despite totally feeling Kate’s frustration!

XelaM · 15/04/2022 00:44

Totally on Toby's side in this episode. Kate was childish and didn't care one bit that Toby was miserable in his new job in LA. He said "I will take the job in LA even though it's a huge step back in my career" and Kate just said "OK". Hmm Not what a caring wife would say. I totally agree with Toby about the Jack comparison and that's what put Kate over the edge. It just proved Toby's point. Kevin must end up with Sophie!!!!!!!!

MadisonAvenue · 15/04/2022 01:41

It was Jack’s wife at the concert, we’ve already seen her a few times.

AnnesBrokenSlate · 15/04/2022 02:13

I think it was quite vicious of Toby to make the comment about Kate not being paid well and then try to backtrack and pretend he was getting at the school and not her. But everything he said about Jack, family Pearson and Kate being late to appointments was right. Kate checked out of the relationship as soon as he moved to SF.
Did anyone else laugh when Phillip was listing all the calamities that had befallen him in his previous relationship or am I just a terrible person? It felt so ott and was the only bit of this episode I thought was completely misjudged. The IVF storyline had enough impact without the fatal car crash added on at the end.

JustDanceAddict · 15/04/2022 07:40

Can’t get behind KaPhilip either - they don’t ring true for me as a couple. Maybe it’s cos we didn’t really see it develop.
I was more team Toby than team Kate, although I could see why she got frustrated with him too and she also wanted to better herself.

diddl · 15/04/2022 08:53

@Cafog

Wait, Sophie was at the engagement party?! How did I miss that??!
She was there with her husband.

When kevin looked across Kate said "are you OK?"

I'm thinking Jeez-it has been about 20 fucking years & he cheated!!!

SapatSea · 15/04/2022 09:20

I actually think the Phillip actor did a good job (especially in the scenes with the children). For me it is Kate that is the problem. She just seems so detached - we had no indication she was excited by him, just sort of accepted that if he wanted her then that was okay. Kate just seems so detached from everything really.

It was pretty awful that Kate was often late to the counselling (considering how much it costs and showing commitment to resolving things). I think Toby really stepped up to try to salvage things - giving up his shiny, exciting new job and life in SF, going to counselling, helping with the kids, making dinner. IIRC as it is a long time since I watched the early series(I stand to be corrected)it always seemed that Toby went along with what Kate wanted - she wanted to try for a baby, quite early into their marriage then when Jack was found to be blind and Toby still hadn't come to terms with it (or his own demons/health issues), he was swept along into the adoption situation aggressively pursued by Kate. When Kate first met Toby I thought he was a creep and exhausting. I like "new" Toby better.

Does Kate not get paid for her job or did Toby mean that teaching paid so little?

I agree with everyone, the episode was back on form.

FinnRussell · 15/04/2022 09:26

Would be such a let down if Kevin ends up with Sophie. He's tried twice and it didn't work.

@SapatSea Agree with you about Kate and Philip. She just seemed really meh about it all. I don't think the Philip actor was the problem. Kate is a pain but TBF I think adoption was Toby's idea. I think he took her to the hospital on jacks birthday or something.

SapatSea · 15/04/2022 09:40

Thanks FinnRussell I didn't remember that Toby suggested adoption.I just remember thinking that KaToby even back then wasn't that stable.

Yes! Blush Wayyyy over the top. She was also blind on top of unsuccessful IVF and then killed by speeding car

Flawedless · 15/04/2022 10:18

The Kate/Phillip hook up is so weird. His big dramatic speech was unintentionally hilarious and insulting. The "oh well my first wife was blind so of course I'm cool enough to date someone fat" was insulting. The whole "and then and then" speech was hilarious. I also felt like the 3 rounds of IVF wasn't even that much. But I was a bit hazy as to whether they were in the UK or US at that point so maybe if they were paying for it all.

AnnesBrokenSlate · 15/04/2022 15:53

I'm so glad it wasn't just me that laughed Grin

Phillip has no rapport with Kevin or Randall either which is odd considering Kate lives her life around them. Unless that lack of rapport is deliberate and is meant to be a sign that Kate is finally cutting the apron strings.

@diddl Kevin and Sophie dated again as adults. Just after Katoby got together and just before Kevin went to rehab. But your point still stands that Kate shouldn't need to check in on him.

diddl · 15/04/2022 16:15

"@diddl Kevin and Sophie dated again as adults."

I'd forgotten that!

AnnesBrokenSlate · 15/04/2022 20:57

I was late to This Is Us. I binge-watched in Covid isolation at the start of the year so the early seasons are still fresh for me Grin

EasterIssland · 15/04/2022 21:10

I was reading some comments. Sophie’s dress is green in the wedding. Some say the dress on the chair is green as well… but it does look different colour to me ..

Daisy03 · 16/04/2022 00:01

Does anyone know how many episodes are left? I'm dreading it ending

diddl · 16/04/2022 07:47

I have a "timeline" question!

How old are Jack & Hayley when Philip & Kate get engaged?

How many years ahead of that does anyone think that they are all meeting up at the cabin?

Do Kevin's kids seem to young to be Nicky & Franny or have Randall & Kevin been aged too much & I'm thinking that it's further ahead than it is?

FinnRussell · 16/04/2022 08:42

@diddl I'm wondering the same thing. I think it must be nick and franny given the ages of tess, Annie and deja. Hard to tell without seeing Jack and Hayley too. Which means the death bed scene is before Jack junior's grown up scenes. I'd always had the death bed scenes as the endgame but maybe not.,.

FinnRussell · 16/04/2022 08:44

I think Jack and Hayley looked about 6 or 7 at engagement?

diddl · 16/04/2022 08:53

It might be just me then!

Kevin looks so old at the cabin I can't help thinking that Nicky & Franny must be teens by then!

diddl · 16/04/2022 08:54

@FinnRussell

I think Jack and Hayley looked about 6 or 7 at engagement?
Yes that sounds about right.

Kevin & Randall both look a lot older at the cabin than at the engagement.

EasterIssland · 16/04/2022 08:55

I think it’s 6 left

ColdHappyBap · 16/04/2022 09:20

I was thinking the deathbed scene can’t be that long after the wedding? Rebecca seems to be in a bad way at the wedding, I don’t see her lasting until Jack Junior is as grown up as he is in the flash forwards.
