@OneMorePieceofCheese

The music is really irritating. They play the sickly sweet musac refrain at any opportunity. It's really intrusive and noticeable.

Prediction: Shelagh is found to be runnjng a prostitution wing. But, in a happy turn of events, she donates the proceeds to Nonatus House. Dr Mansplain tells her patiently why Prostitution Is Wrong. They hug. Her children shout YAY!

🤣🤣🤣🤣

The fit posh guy is Shelagh's pimp

vjg13 · 04/01/2022 09:34

It's cheesy, nothing like the early episodes but perfect Sunday telly!

TitsInAbsentia · 04/01/2022 10:03

I used to cry at every episode of CTM, so either I've now got a swinging brick for a heart or the writing has changed seriously. Is it that they've now used all of the original (hard hitting) material? Is that why we are now twee as f....

orangesandlemons3 · 04/01/2022 11:50

I miss the old episodes of CTM. They were much more realistic and tugged at the heartstrings.

Akire · 04/01/2022 12:01

There is also the over sickly representation of Disability. Reggie is good character but seems unrealistic for the time and even now to be honest. At that time Disabled people did not have legal right to live in community and unless your family could fully support you more likely to be in institution.

Lol at Sheila the pimp

OnlyTheTitosaurusOfTheIceberg · 04/01/2022 13:14

I agree that the storylines are more twee and neatly wrapped up these days, but I think some of that is inevitable to a degree because of rising living standards, so there is less of the grinding poverty, the NHS and welfare state are well established by now, fewer people around of childbearing age who would have experienced things like the workhouse first hand (as it’s getting on for 40 years since they were abolished by this time). So the environmental factors that led to many of the hard-hitting storylines are diminishing.

It’s definitely a little bubble of progressive attitudes. I can understand why they don’t want to offend modern sensibilities - I doubt anyone wants to watch Lucille encountering racism or Reggie being teased every week - but it does make it very unrealistic/anachronistic.

TrashyPanda · 04/01/2022 17:56

Wasn’t it shown that Reggie would have had to go to some institution if he wasn’t taken in by the Buckles? And that is what changed Violets mind?

I could be making this up!

Back in the 1960s I had a great uncle who had a club foot and was known as “an innocent”. He lived in a small village with his sister, and everyone knew him and looked out for him. He was a sweet man, very shy and quiet.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/01/2022 18:11

Didn't he live in some sort of supported living in the countryside, and just come home for the holidays?

JakeyRolling · 04/01/2022 19:38

I think originally it looked like he was going into the old-fashioned home (St Gideon's) but he then came to live with Fred and Violet.

He then ended up at the much nicer supported living-type community but can't remember how that came about.

balalake1 · 04/01/2022 21:00

I gave it a miss. Should have ended a long time ago, has become unrealistic.

triballeader · 04/01/2022 22:34

Re: Reggie- in the storyline spent time at a Camp Hill Movement Community. The Movement started in 1940's. Reggie's mum had done everything for him. EVERYTHING. Time at the Camphill Community would have allowed him to learn self help/care skills he had not had opportunity to learn before. Familiar with them as my eldest son spent three years at one of their colleges.

Had a relative born in the 1950's who had autism and prader-willi and moderate LD's She was a bit scary when she wanted food. Her mum fought tooth and nail to keep her at home after seeing the 'homes'. Meant her mum could not work [working class] but the rest of the family rallied round with help with care, food and when they had it- money.
