Well this is boring.

@UnicornsReal

Yes I think now they are t following the books it doesn’t ring true anymore. I met someone yesterday who had been asked to write for the show. She’s a young person without a great deal of life experience. I wonder if this is the problem. Lack of continuity with different writers, some of them with little historical perspective or life experience.
Oh, that's really interesting.

I find a lot of younger people now seem to have a very poor grasp of how people from earlier times, say even as recently as my grandmother's or even mother's generation, thought about things. They see their views as actually quite alien and can't really put themselves in their frame of mind or see why they thought a particular way.

It would be very challenging to write about such people from that kind of limited view.

UnicornsReal · 23/01/2022 01:15

Yes, I agree. I notice the same thing myself.

SarahAndQuack · 23/01/2022 16:23

I finally caught up - oh my lord, that bit with St Patrick in the meths drinkers' hide-out was hilarious! I thin his line was something like 'There's not much I'm afraid of, but on my own I couldn't protect Nancy, so it's a good thing Fred's here'.

Like ... what?! 'I brought along this pleasant, bumbling, not notably macho retired bloke, because there's a Young Gel that needs protecting.'

Sometimes you can really tell his wife runs the show.

Was anyone else a bit confused by the manager character, for the pregnant woman who was a singer? They gave him masses of screen time and seemed to be building him up for something, then ... nothing. I'd like to think that's going to be an ongoing story of some kind, because otherwise it was really unfinished. I kept expecting some revelation that he was really the baby's father or something.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 23/01/2022 20:01

I don’t know if I can bear to watch Dr Mansplain tonight. Last week I was almost throwing cushions at the TV . Head cocked to one side, arms wide, mansplain. Aggghhhhhhhhhh

Why was he explaining labyrinthitis to Sister Julienne? She’s a nurse.

MinglingFlamingo · 23/01/2022 20:02

That's got to be a record. 5 seconds in and we have the first birth of the night

anon12345678901 · 23/01/2022 20:17

maybe a pregnancy announcement coming in this episode

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 23/01/2022 20:25

They are getting worse at pretending there is a baby in the bundles of blankets. That woman with the red sheets clearly just had a scrap of fabric in her arms.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 23/01/2022 20:27

And Fred is an idiot. His wife might be annoying but spending money on produce and lying about selling it is horrible when she is the one who successfully built a business and he is just tagging along.

Pebble21uk · 23/01/2022 20:28

Costume had a malfunction with all those day-glow extras walking by!

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 23/01/2022 20:30

The old fashioned feeding advice is killing me. I'm guessing they are not going to follow the program with a link to accurate advice!

Nevermindful · 23/01/2022 20:34

This is a glacially slow episode.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/01/2022 20:34

Apparently it's Holocaust memorial week this week. Hence the story line. Not sure having Dr Turner cure his PST is appropriate though.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 23/01/2022 20:39

They've not really done holocaust before have they? Yet of course there will have been many refugees so it won't have been new to them. Feels like they are not making as much of it as they could. Like everything in these newer series they are not getting into the thick of it.

Nevermindful · 23/01/2022 20:39

I was convinced the new dad was going to refuse the bris. This storyline could have been better without bloody Dr Turner.

jay55 · 23/01/2022 20:47

Social distancing doing my head in tonight.
Phylis would have been right in there for a hug at the pregnancy news.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/01/2022 20:49

He's allergic to the fur. Can't believe st Turner hasn't worked that out yet.

OP posts:
OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 23/01/2022 20:50

I actually wanted Cyril to take it badly, would have been more interesting.

Mr T of course being all forward thinking on the homosexuality laws.

The Turner couple of the forefront of holistic care.

Nevermindful · 23/01/2022 20:50

Social distancing is also really pissing me off.

I think you can tell Helen George is pregnant in this episode. Her face has filled out. I wish I looked that good when pregnant.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/01/2022 20:51

The date where Matthew and Trixie were no where each other was hilariously bad social distancing.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 23/01/2022 20:54

Poor woman with obvious pnd. Pnd wasn't new at all. Can't believe they've not got her diagnosed and sorted yet. Shouting at her for leaving the baby outside! Ridiculous!

Nevermindful · 23/01/2022 20:54

Cyril and Lucille find out they are having a baby and do some joyous handholding across a massive table.

RainbowConnection1 · 23/01/2022 20:54

The social distancing is a joke. Lucille tells her husband she's pregnant and then they clasp hands across a table?! It's almost as bad as their wedding! How did she actually get pregnant given their never closer than half a room from each other?

vjg13 · 23/01/2022 20:55

It is in fact Holocaust Memorial Day on 27th January every year, a reminder to think about all those who died.

Immaculate conception?

That blue crocheted blanket which was handed to the grandfather was even worse. It was soooo floppy
