Absolutely loved it!

My list of big house jobs includes 'declutter' in every room so I was hoping to put off doing it be inspired. Loved Stacey Solomon though would have liked more from Ivan on the cleaning.

It would cost thousands wouldn't it.

Team of 4-8 people for 7 days at an hourly rate, plus removal services x 2, skip hire, handyman materials if you did that bit. It would soon add up.

How much is a removals packing service?
Wonder if you could piggy back onto that.

@batmanladybird that's us too, people don't put things like torches and tape measures away, then when they do they sling them in the nearest cupboard or drawer then end up buying a new one because they couldn't find the old one or it has disappeared under other stuff.

That's why the sorting by categories works, I started trying to do that when the Marie Kondo book came out, I remember getting every container of pens and pencils from all over the house and being horrified at how many we had yet I could never find one when I wanted one.

I did chuck some recipes out that I have taken from magazines and never made.

I cannot find the ones I really like but there is less of them now

Just caught up with the Cornwall episode. I hadn't really come across Stacey before but I'm really impressed with how genuinely kind and empathic she seems, so very patient with Sue and all her belongings and stories. Loved it!

I think it would be too expensive to do this privately in the same format. Even taking just a modest profit, the amount of manpower required paying a reasonable wage would cost a lot. I think most folk needing this done would have modest budgets.

I think I have a few issues. I would grudge the waste of money in giving/donating/throwing things away but also have little inclination to sell stuff. If I did want to donate stuff then it's just too much to just pop to a local shop, so it's the practicality of getting rid that's a problem. I have a lot of memories built into DCs stuff and I was brought up in poverty and have nothing of my own childhood. I lack motivation as if I were to clear a room or cupboard, I end up putting the stuff elsewhere so it doesn't leave. It just feels too overwhelming to start.

I think it could be done in a different way but just not quite as comprehensive. If the house had outdoor space then a person could erect a gazebo and do it room by room on-site. It could be done one day a week with the person and the homeowner working together. The person could have a van and take the stuff away to charity shop/tip/recycling centre. An assistant could be cleaning and doing minor maintenance on the empty room while the sorting was happening in the gazebo. Then you'd be looking at a daily rate and disposal fee for 1.5 to 2 people, you'd need a van and a decent outdoor gazebo type thing, cleaning equipment and tool kit. Or any repairs/work in the room could be for the home owners to arrange/do.

So, if you were paying each week it wouldn't feel like as much money and you could pay to get things started and maybe tackle the last few rooms yourself.

House clearance companies exist, I think they generally will resell anything of value and take it it off their fee.
So if you could put all the unwanted stuff in one place, you can certainly pay someone to take it away.

Do they? I always wondered how they work. I always feel like you are paying them they are win win

I can’t see how it would be a viable business idea in terms of profit but I bet it’s something lots of people could benefit from/would like. 🤔

Can I join? Dd2 who is 9 and I really love this programme!

I do think though they don't show the methodology or reducing - ie marie kondo says do this in a specific order. Dd2 keeps saying they could keep their random nick nacks if they got rid of loads of crap. The show doesn't explain the order iyswim

Honestly my dream would be running a charity that declutters for people who are referred - who can't afford a firm to do it. If I win the lottery I'll become a foster carer and a de clutterer

@imnotacelebritygetmeoutofhere I think realistically it would have to be room by room for me. And the biggest value would be in the carpentry/DIY/handyman time to fix all the annoying small jobs that I have on an ever extending list... but if I were bringing someone in literally to clear, clean, support me to sort, reorganise and replace - maybe £200 for a whole (big) room?? And something like 75% of the take from any sales, ie I'd expect 25% of anything we'd agree that you'd sell.

So if you did my kitchen/diner, that would be a hell of a lot of work for £200 and I'd expect a lot too. And I'd only get one room done at that rate. I'd expect to pay extra for actual carpentry or major repairs but not for small bits.

@ pastypirate I hope you win! I could help on an ad-hoc basis for sure. I love organising and cleaning but I’m not brilliant at parting with sentimental things.

Report
LeonoraFlorence · 20/11/2021 18:32

I agree with your DD. If they got rid of all but 1 fondue fork, they could keep their very sentimental things more easily. I think they need a system whereby they start with easier things (toiletries, kitchen utensils etc) then see what space they have last and deal with the important bits!

Report
ElephantOfRisk · 20/11/2021 18:45

I agree, it would definitely be easier to sort out the actual practical stuff. e.g. I have 3 bathrooms/toilets, so I should have no more than 9 hand soaps (1 open in each and 2 spare). Maybe 3 sets of bedding for each bed. That kind of stuff is logical and not emotional. Then clothes should be relatively easy, then on to potentially more difficult stuff like books, toys, ornaments, paperwork etc.

It's all the cables and chargers etc too and just generally obsolete adapters and electrical stuff. I'm sure I have at least 3 PCs that don't work stuffed into cupboards.

Yeah, I'm now wondering if it's a stunt house rather than his actual house. apart from the random messes for effect, it's pretty empty and doesn't look lived in.
