Anyone watching it? Quite intriguing, read the book years ago, but can't remember the story! I love Bertie Carvel but he's not quite the gentle troubled poet who is Dalgleish in the books. Interesting to see how it develops though.

I liked it.
I love all the PD Janes books and am glad the new adaptations are set in the times they were written in as opposed to the present day, I don’t think that would have worked at all.
I hope they do all the books!

QuietFlame · 04/11/2021 22:24

PD James obv

SweetestThing · 04/11/2021 22:24

I'm watching. I loved Roy Marsden as Dalgleish but this is shaping up well. They've captured the female hothouse environment quite well, j think.

Noeuf · 04/11/2021 22:25

Oh we just switched off as it was getting too hard to follow Blush

youngestisapsycho · 04/11/2021 22:31

Loved it… looking forward to tomorrow

UglyModernWindows · 04/11/2021 22:32

I enjoyed it! Glad it's on tomorrow again.

Disfordarkchocolate · 04/11/2021 22:35

I don't think I'll watch another one. I liked the book and it feels faithful to that but I didn't like the lead actor. He also looked too old.

Clawdy · 04/11/2021 22:54

Bertie Carvel is 44, but he does look older. One thing I found improbable was the fact that the dead nurse had been used as a test for the other student nurses. I'm sure even in the early seventies that would not have been allowed, another student pushing a tube down her throat. Even without the poison, she could have been hurt!

I trained as a nurse in the mid 80s and it wouldn’t have happened then...
It’s true to the book though and P D James was usually very thorough in her research so perhaps did happen in the 70s.

UglyModernWindows · 04/11/2021 23:13

Omg I didn’t clock at all the detective is the same actor from Dr Foster! I think it’s the hair and 70’s styling that makes him look older, he’s not old looking irl.

Who was the girl in the shed? Did she really offered sex services for free?

Platax · 04/11/2021 23:22

Dalgliesh actor isn't how I picture Dalgliesh, but then people rarely are in book adaptations, and I thought it was pretty good.

P D James was married to a doctor, though he was institutionalised after having a breakdown during the war, and she worked in hospital administration for a long time. So I imagine she had access to people who could tell her about nurse training, and as she was pretty meticulous generally in her plotting I think she would have checked.

The girl in the shed was a cleaner/housemaid, I think.

Notonthestairs · 05/11/2021 08:58

I wasn't expecting to but I really enjoyed it - I thought it was spot on. My mum was a nurse in the 60's and found the atmosphere within the accommodation tense and claustrophobic.

Adam Dalgliesh is described as dark haired and handsome so I think Bertie Carver physically fitted the bill and managed to convey the characters decency and gentleness.

I have no memory for the plot but I'm going to pin it on matron because Dalgliesh looked at her approvingly whilst she looked after a patient.

UglyModernWindows · 05/11/2021 13:24

Thanks Platax

But why is cleaner/housemaid girl in the shed? Why did she look dirty and unkept? Surely she didn't live in the said shed? I'm bemused.

That was horrific!
Puffinhead · 05/11/2021 19:22

I enjoyed it.

Re. the practice, my DM did nurse training in early 70s and yes they did practice on each other. However, she said the tube would’ve gone down the nose, not the throat.

ancientgran · 05/11/2021 19:30

I really enjoyed it but I think it seemed more like the 50s or the 60s at a push rather than the mid 70s. I assume it was meant to be 75 as the radio was saying something about Margaret Thatcher becoming leader of the Conservatives.

The matron was talking about being in loco parentis for 2nd year student nurses so they'd be 19 or 20.

The whole feel just didn't seem right for the mid 70s.

Cocolapew · 05/11/2021 20:25

I really enjoyed it, Iiked the fact it wasn't modern day.

I was expecting it to go down the nose too ( but not to show that on screen).

That's unbelievble. It was a form of torture used on suffragettes so to use it on young, healthy women as a demonstration is .....mindboggling! It must have been awful.

Cocolapew · 05/11/2021 21:32

How does the white apron thingy stay up on the nurses uniform?

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/11/2021 21:37

Small safety pins inside.
White hairgrips to keep the caps on.

Cocolapew · 05/11/2021 21:48

Thanks, the sister's headwear would annoy me it sits too far back on the head. I'd think it's falling off.

Redshoeblueshoe · 05/11/2021 22:19

Ancientgran when I heard the mention of Thatcher I assumed it was late 70's but I thought it came across as much more from the 50's.

Cocolapew · 05/11/2021 22:25

I really enjoyed it, it was a bit different to the usual police dramas. I liked the slower pace without it dragging the arse out of it for weeks.

Cuck00soup · 05/11/2021 22:28

Im enjoying the tension. I'm sure I heard the theme tune for only fools & horses on in the background at one point. OFAH started in 1981 according to Wikipedia.

But yes tube would have gone down the nose (stomach contents pH tested, not just observed, too).

Glad it wasn't just me. It made me feel a bit confused, I had to try and forget when it was supposed to be. I did like it though.
