I am on episode 5 and can understand why it is popular, but it is one of the most violent series I have ever seen. For those that have watched it what did you think?

OP posts:
Carolinechanning · 18/10/2021 23:56

@garlictwist

I quite enjoyed it but also didn't think it was any more violent than other "violent" things.

I thought the ending was a bit weak and also very slow though and left lots of questions unanswered. Maybe that's the point.

What questions have you been left with? I'm wondering/hoping there will be a second series. I can't imagine they're going to leave it at one after how popular it's proven to be.
JacquelineCarlyle · 19/10/2021 00:01

It's definitely set up for a 2nd season.

NearLifeExperience · 19/10/2021 10:48

There was a strong morality to Squid Game which was different to the way say violence is portrayed in other shows, where the gun toting, wise cracking hitman who sprays bullets like confetti is the one we as the viewer are meant to be rooting for. hmm Here you are definitely rooting for the victims who are staring down the barrel of a gun not the ones carrying the firearms

Yes! I think this is exactly the point, exactly why it is being regarded as horrific, violent and shocking. It’s “good” or innocent people who are being killed, the ones we are rooting for.

We were supposed to punch the air and cheer when hundreds of “savages” were gunned down by cowboys in those repulsive westerns; when James Bond and the “good” Brit and American forces gun down the evil villain’s henchmen and minions; when uncountable stormtroopers are obliterated in Star Wars. We’re supposed to be pleased!
The death count and violence level in Squid Game is probably lower than any of these, but it’s not “baddies” being killed, so that’s where the shock value lies. But “baddies” are people too!

Good theory about the red and blue: those “staff” will not have much choice about what they’re doing and will be in constant danger of elimination too.

NearLifeExperience · 19/10/2021 10:55

And I wish that woman with the curly hair would just piss off!

(I’m on episode 7 and I imagine she does, in a horrible way, quite soon)

ImUninsultable · 19/10/2021 10:59

Its It's not set up for a 2nd season. The writer has repeatedly said that he doesnt have a story in mind for a 2nd season and if he were to do it, he'd do it with a writer's room this time.

There are some loose ends that could be told and there is more story in there, like about the staff and how that all came about etc.

JacquelineCarlyle · 19/10/2021 18:46

Have you seen the final episode @ImUninsultable? Definitely seems like it's been set up for a 2nd season even if the writer has no idea what that might be yet, they've certainly made it very possible.

toffeeshock · 19/10/2021 18:49

Yes I get the feeling that it wasn’t originally written with that ending and they’ve added a bit on to set it up for another season.
JacquelineCarlyle · 19/10/2021 18:54

That's probably true @toffeeshock

She's irritating but she's supposed to be.

I think a few women can relate to her and so can men too, from the 'gangland style boss' guy she gets involved in.

SPOLIER DONT READ UNLESS YOUVE FINISHED!!!

maybe that explains the ridiculous red hair at the end - he was asked back to film a new "open" ending and had dyed his hair for another role? I guess open threads are how main man ended up there after winning in 2015/ did the cop really die when he fell off the cliff and did any of his texts go through?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 21/10/2021 14:37

ALSO SPOILER:

I thought the red hair kind of hinted he was going back in as a pink solider..?

But who knows?

Reddit and TikTok are full of theories. You could waste a day reading/watching them.

ImUninsultable · 21/10/2021 15:12

@LCHF2018

Remember at the end it jumps a year in the future. And they're recruiting new players for a new game. He sees the recruiter and takes the card off the poor kid who was targeted.

It's been a year and they're still out there doing the same stuff. If the texts got through, or the cop made it home, then there would behave been news stories investigations into the money trail etc. Didnt seem like any of that had happened.

Cop might have survived but been fished out the water and taken back to the island.

Possible spoiler don't read if you haven't finished!

Last chance to look away!

I might be misremembering but I thought the final scene was him calling the number on the card at the airport and was filmed from behind the whole time? I'm sure it was because I thought at the time it wasn't the actual actor. Maybe they changed the ending and had to film it like that because he couldn't do it

ImUninsultable · 21/10/2021 15:49

@Carolinechanning

You see his face clearly when he is going into the airport. You see him spot the recruiter and go and take the card off the kid. You see him make the phone call and then turn around. It's quite a long scene with the red hair. Not just the phone call.

NearLifeExperience · 21/10/2021 15:58

I didn't like the ending. Just go and visit your daughter FGS!
I don't imagine Gi Hun wants to go back as a red 'foot soldier': he's far to decent and moral to want to do all that killing.

RedRiverShore · 21/10/2021 16:03

I didn't think it was that overly violent, lots of shooting and blood but probably no worse than stuff like Terminator and First Blood type films, I also thought it was a bit slow when the games were played as we had to go through everyone playing them and it was a bit tedious, I especially found this with the marbles and glass tile games. The red suited people reminded me of another film or series, can't remember which, and made it a bit comic book like

Yeah the actual game playing especially the marble & glass tile ones were pretty tedious.
NearLifeExperience · 21/10/2021 16:47

What?? The marble and tile games were tedious?! Friend against friend, partner against partner and husband against wife. To the death! It was knife edge emotional tension! Sheesh! Grin

I didn't remember him turning around, just the phone call from behind, thanks!

He might not WANT to go back as a soldier but he might think if he pretends he does (or as a VIP) he could get evidence to stop them?
RedRiverShore · 21/10/2021 16:59

It was nowhere near as violent as Clockwork Orange which I sneaked into the cinema to see when I was about 14-15 just before it was banned, it was X rated but we used to just say we were 18 then if we were asked.

Wherearemymarbles · 21/10/2021 18:04

The acting is properly appalling. Even worse with the dubbing
On top of this i think all the characters are annoying twunts in the extreme so i hope they all die

In sort i cant for the life of me see why its so popular

littlelollypop · 21/10/2021 19:25

I thought the acting was good except the American VIPs which was absolutely shocking, so bad it was funny!

I completely agree! Also agree that I wanted him to just go and visit his daughter too!
Wearethetwirl · 21/10/2021 20:39

Yes I thought the acting was great bar the VIPs. I’d prefer to watch Lee Jung-Jae over Tom “two curries” Cruise any day.

However I did watch it in Korean with subtitles as the dubbing was at times poor/borderline comical.

Gi-hun’s red hair was explained by the creator as symbolising his rage (though it did have a touch of early noughties Sharon Osbourne about it).
