Thread to discuss plot with spoilers.

Don’t read on if you haven’t watched!

Love this series. So chilling.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 26/09/2021 12:45

What is the purpose of the games though? It's not on TV for the masses like the Hunger Games, nor is it a selection process like in the 3%. Is it just to entertain the VIPs? Where did the pink men come from? Are they actually slaves? How was the arena built? I love the part with the brightly coloured stairs. Others must be watching. Is the reason for the games organ collection or is that a side gig for the pink men?

Birdkin · 26/09/2021 12:53

Ali’s death and the other girl in episode 6 were brutal. That episode was so sad.

I really wanted Sae-Byeok to survive but knew it was pretty inevitable it would be the two men at the end, the beginning scene made that really predictable.

People who enjoyed it you might want to try Alice im Borderland also on Netflix, Japanese show with a similar premise.

Mol1628 · 26/09/2021 13:42

The point of the games I thought was that the rich people were just using them for entertainment and to bet on. Like horses. 🤷‍♀️

I would like to know how/why the pink people were involved though as PP said they weren’t treated well either.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 26/09/2021 14:05

When is season 2 coming?

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 26/09/2021 19:45

I think the red hair was a result of feeling overwhelmed and suddenly having money at his disposal.

001 - it was luck that he survived right, with the slight advantage of knowing the games? I guess that was the risk he took. All that effort to prove a point to the winner though?

So our protagonist has been invited back to the games... Will he play? Trying to prove a point...but he could well die...?

Fantastic series.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 26/09/2021 19:45

OK not suddenly having money. He'd had it for year. But hadn't spent any

Tootshoots · 26/09/2021 23:03

001 took quite a chance with the tug of war game, he could easily have gone over...

I was thinking the same. He wouldn't have got away with that one if they'd lost!
Leaveitonthefloordrobe · 26/09/2021 23:31

I've just finished it after bingeing over the past couple of days. It reminded me a bit of the film Would You Rather, which involves games where people are pitted against each other and to lose is to die.

I didn't guess the 001 twist, but I guessed that the front man was the police officer's brother relatively early on. I'd like to know how he went from being winner to being front man, too. Some back stories would be good in Season 2.

I think knew he was going to win that game. He had said something about playing when he was younger and always winning even if the person he played was much bigger/stronger because of the technique he used. He must've been confident the team he was in would listen to him and work well together.
Tootshoots · 27/09/2021 13:30

True but it was the other guy telling them all to take 3 steps forward that won them the game. 001 couldn't have known he would do that. Plot hole me thinks.

IsabellesMissingSock · 27/09/2021 19:14

I binged the whole series yesterday and thought it was really good.

Soubriquet · 28/09/2021 17:07

Currently watching it now

I wasn’t going to as I don’t like dubbed things but it caught my attention

Sitting through episode 2. I was Shock during red light green light

You don't have to watch it dubbed. Change your settings to Original Korean with subtitles. (Much better IMO.)

Watched it all in two days and was surprised by how gripping it was.

@Invasionofthegutsnatchers - don't think he was invited back to play. The card was one that he took from the guy at the train station. Our main man rang the number on it and the voice on the other end of the line said something like, "Get on the plane and leave for your own good."

Soubriquet · 28/09/2021 17:27

I don’t like hearing it foreign either Grin

I can tolerate the dubbed

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 28/09/2021 21:58

My teen dd wanted me to watch this with her.

I thought it was weird that the old guy was in there, the other contestants you had some backstory which explained their reasons but I couldn't understand why he'd want to do it.

I had thought the policeman would survive? It was a shoulder wound but if he had surely there wouldn't be another Squid Games the following year?! Also did none of his texts go through? Surely the police would be a bit more interested in 454 missing people!

The ending were our winner gets off the plane really pissed me off, his poor dd hasn't seen him for a year!! He was a useless father throughout the series so I suppose that wouldn't change 😕

RevolvingPivot · 29/09/2021 20:26

I've just finished it. Yes the red hair and the style. Very strange.

I wanted red hair guy to be settled and content in life with a house, family and money.

Now he's going back??

I thought old guy had something to do with it when we didn't see him die.

At the end when he was in the bed, I thought it looked like him but didn't think it was until he said the brain tumour was true as red hair guy asked "who are you."

Also guessed Ali was carrying stones not marbles. That bit was very sad.

I thought the whole point was to sell their organs but some were insinuated straight away.

I didn't understand the swapping of the triangle mask for a square one.

rosegoldwatcher · 29/09/2021 20:30

The cop had worked out that Squares were managers?

rosegoldwatcher · 29/09/2021 20:35

I thought the whole point was to sell their organs but some were insinuated straight away.

The organ trade was a side-line for the masked workers.
They had full access to the medical records of all players and, presumably, had their eyes open for suitable donors. Those were harvested of their organs whilst others were incinerated whole.

boatyardblues · 29/09/2021 20:36

@viques

I was completely misled by number 001.

Want to know more about how the policeman’s brother morphed from being a winner to his present position. I hope season 2 has some explanatory back stories.

Like how do they recruit the pink suit people?

Why are all the VIPs the people they are, (apparently rich , white, foreign) how do they get involved.

And why can’t they afford straws for the VIPs’ drinks?
RevolvingPivot · 29/09/2021 20:54

Insinuated lol sorry

BakeOffRewatch · 29/09/2021 21:21

Don’t worry, I know you mean “incinerated straight away” not insinuated @RevolvingPivot

RevolvingPivot · 29/09/2021 21:29

I couldn't spell it and when that came up on predictive text I assumed that was it lol.

I'm going to re watch but with the actual audio. I think the voice overs made it seem a bit cheesy.

rosegoldwatcher · 29/09/2021 21:36

Can't abide dubbing!
The sing-song lilt of the Korean language is lovely. DH thought that I was watching something in Welsh!
