Manhunt The Night Stalker

Really enjoyed this first episode, although obviously harrowing at times.
I was confused by two of the main characters looking so alike (Morgan and Eason) but wonder if they have done that deliberately because so far they have only gone on racial profiling to find the perpetrator (if the face fits, you're a suspect) so it's ripe for a case of mistaken identity?

I'm assuming that Martin Clunes comes up trumps and solves the case but for now my money is on Dave, whose only job this episode was to hold a door open, but it was worthy of a lingering camera shot...

I enjoyed it too. I was very relieved that it is three consecutive nights, and not once a week - I can't with for the next one!

I'm also assuming they catch the rapist. The storylines are based on the diaries of the real Colin Sutton, but though he probably had some failures, I think they'll concentrate on his successes.

(Thicko critic in the Express said he keeps thinking he's watching Doc Martin (because Clunes is so typecast Hmm). What a load of bollox! Martin Clunes is a good enough actor to play two different characters and not have then get confused.)

Very good first episode. Good article about the case in Radio Times. Speculation that case would have had more attention and resources if victims had been young women.

mum2jakie · 21/09/2021 19:47

Enjoyed the previous series about Levi Belfield investigation and went on to read the book written by Colin Sutton. Enjoyed the first episode of this one too - interesting dynamics between the police officers involved

Really enjoyed episode 1. Nice characterisation by Clunes, he's almost invisible in this but still an individual. By now he must have spent a fair bit of time observing cops, think he does it well.

Elderflower14 · 21/09/2021 21:06

Watched last night and tonight with my Mum. I told her I was going to get up in the night and fill the washing up bowl with lightbulbs... She was NOT amused!! 🤣 🤣

3kidsareenough · 21/09/2021 21:34

Enjoying (if that's the word) this Martin Clunes is excellent. Have to give ITV credit with their true crime shows, this, Des & White House Farm murders all well done. Didn't realize there was a first series of this would have been interested in this. Might get the book

Akire · 21/09/2021 22:10

Enjoying these too, only saw first series few weeks ago. Nice chance see all paperwork and behind scenes effort not just shouting at suspects in interview rooms. Though seemed have done sexual assault on man victim as in how awful when compared to woman, touching gentiles of men verses rape ejaculation and being so violent it perforates your bowel. I know both horrendous but can’t really compare the two. There really are some awful scum bags out there. Especially as women on news murdered weekend walking home, it’s never ending

First series is still available on ITV player/hub @3kidsareenough Well worth watching.

I usually find Clunes a real turnoff as an actor, just one of those things, sorry Martin, but think he is excellent in this. It’s a fascinating story, and horrific, I know the stalker s not at liberty, but I bet I wasn’t the only person to double check my doors last night,

Akire · 21/09/2021 22:41

I hope they explain lightbulbs and the ornaments. Surely creeping in and out moving vases and tea pots to back door can only make it more likely neighbours spot you. Least we know he be caught tomorrow!

Blueberrycreampie · 21/09/2021 22:42

With people having more alarms and cameras everywhere, one would hope another serial burglar/attacker would be caught quickly. On the other hand, there seems to be fewer police around which is worrying.

PlonkyWillyWonky · 22/09/2021 08:01

I'm scaring myself watching it alone. Martin Clunes is brilliant, he is like DJ that he can adapt to any role and you forget his previous characters
I'm thinking the garden ornaments and the telephone hold the key
Interesting how he descided to target the houses he did

PermanentTemporary · 22/09/2021 09:38

I binged series 1 last night. A couple of dud moments but not from Clunes, and generally a really well structured series (not that I know anything about how to put a drama together, but the sense of multiple frustrations with an eventual resolution was gripping).

Akire · 22/09/2021 09:39

I fast forwarded all the bits where he’s at home with wife seemed far to many with no plot essentials and her basically moaning at him and arguing over which police force was the best!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/09/2021 09:47

First series is still available on ITV player/hub @3kidsareenough Well worth watching.

So is "Stephen" with Steve Coogan as the policeman who manages to get Stephen Lawrence's killers convicted. Also on ITV catch up.

Though seemed have done sexual assault on man victim as in how awful when compared to woman, touching gentiles of men verses rape ejaculation and being so violent it perforates your bowel. I know both horrendous but can’t really compare the two

That struck me, too - it rather jarred. I thought fondling genitals is NOTHING compared to rape, but on thinking about it, I think it was just sympathy for a deeply distressed victim - one he had met himself, rather than considering the crime the equivalent of those brutal rapes.

I had wondered though, from the beginning, whether there would have been more money put into catching him if he had assaulted /raped male victims. I recall there was a serial rapist not so long ago who got a very long sentence - much longer than usual, and there was speculation that because his crimes were against males, they were considered more serious. (Can't remember the details, unfortunately, but others might recall the case)

3kidsareenough · 22/09/2021 12:36

Oooh will check out the ITV player never thought on that thanks mumtojackie and Schaden will have a look at the Stephen Laurence program too. Steve Coogan is quiet good in serious roles.

Has anyone watched the Night Stalker on Netflix? It's a documentary rather than a drama about Richard Ramirez. he committed a similar type of crimes over a long period of time, although he murdered a lot of his elderly victims, and it wasn't just the elderly there was children as well. It happened in LA during the 1980s. I have to say it scared the life out of me after watching it I was checking all doors and windows going to bed after watching that one.

TokyoSushi · 22/09/2021 16:16

Just caught up on this, this afternoon. It's excellent, looking forward to tonight.

PermanentTemporary · 22/09/2021 16:57

I'm still remembering the moment from series 1 where Clunes/Sutton put his hand and arm over his daughter's head and kissed her hair. Something very simple and unsentimental - no gloopy music or words - but very powerful in the context of the overall performance and the horrible scene of Bellfield hassling girls at the bus stop.

darklindor · 22/09/2021 17:10

Martin Clunes and the actual detective were on GMB on Monday which is why I started watching the series. An interesting interview.

NotMyCat · 22/09/2021 17:17

I need to watch the first series! This one is excellent

colouringindoors · 22/09/2021 21:09

Ep3. Martin Clunes really is good in this
