Our Girl Thread 61 "Our Girl, Soldier Soldier and The Musketeers Revisited"

We started to follow "Our Girl" back in 2014 and although there will be no further series, we do revisit from time to time. We have watched all seven series of "Soldier Soldier" to keep up our military terminology and have almost finished the first series of "The Musketeers". Of course, there is a definite connection between "Our Girl" and "The Musketeers" in the delightful form of Luke Pasqualino. We will start on series 2 very soon.

I do have every confidence though that it will all end happily next week.

Yes ilove, I suppose series 3 is a bit of a spoiler. It's taken a while to wind up the drama and tension, but now we are on the knife edge. Looking forward to next week.

Ilovelblue · 20/10/2021 22:19

Are we all going to watch The Long Call on Monday?

OP posts:
Rhubarb01 · 20/10/2021 22:25

It's running on four consecutive nights - so I'm planning to watch it, apart from Wednesday, when I'll need to catch up. As I said before, I'm not a fan of Ann Cleeves other stuff (Vera and Shetland) but feel that after all our years of support for BA plus the many times we felt we should take over managment of his career, I should watch this, as it;s probably the most high-profile role he's had on British TV, and it's seen as ground-breaking stuff, so let's hope it's good. It certainly has a very good cast. Perhaps we can have our own little chat on here about it, if we watch it?

Ilovelblue · 20/10/2021 22:39

That would be good Rhu. Shall we watch it all and then chat, say, on Friday or early the following week? Whatever suits really, though I can't do Tuesday. There may even be a thread started up elsewhere on MN?

I've never watched Vera properly and the bits of Shetland I've seen have always been depressing. I hope for BA's sake that it's a hit. As you say, we were certainly championing his career after OG1, weren't we?

Also Rhu, how are you finding SCD this year?

I was wondering if we would have a side discussion on The Long Call.

Rhubarb01 · 20/10/2021 23:12

Happy to have a side chat on this thread about it, maybe on Friday or some comments during the week, if we want. I expect there will be a main thread on the series, but I think our interest might be slightly more osbcure than those trying to fathom out the plot and feeling angsty about spoilers. Whatever he does, we will be looking for OG parallels Grin

As for SCD, well I'm enjoying it. I like Rose and Giovanni (she's amazing) AJ and Kai, Tom and Amy and also Adam and Katya (even though, he's done lots of the bad dances like Rumba. I think he's got Samba this week. I'm wondering if they're hoping they'll be able to do all the crowd pleasers later in the series with the difficult/low scoring ones out of the way while there are still a lot of couples) They're all pretty good really, so it just comes down to how popular they are. Happy to have a live Saturday chat along on here if you like?

Rhubarb01 · 20/10/2021 23:13

obscure - blooming fingers before brain!

Magi84 · 21/10/2021 07:09

I'll be watching The Long Call but actually will record and watch the next day with each episode. I prefer to do this with ITV programmes as I can fast forward through the ads. Especially a crime story. Can't bear all those short breaks.

As you say we as avid OG fans will be watching for similarities in BA's performance.

Ilovelblue · 23/10/2021 17:02

Hi Rhu. Probably not going to be able to watch SCD from the beginning tonight so will have to record and watch a bit later. Maybe a little later on in the series?

Evening ladies. I've got my seat booked for BA at 9pm. Hope it's a good series.

So, I've got as far as the first advert break and already have two observations...I prefer seeing him kiss his husband in this to Georgie and, as he issued his instructions to the team and walked purposefully through the office, I thought...there goes CJ! Told you our observations would be slightly obscure! Grin

Rhubarb01 · 25/10/2021 21:18

Also, I know this area of Devon and once spent a weekend staying at Hartland Point, surprising how many times it crops up in dramas.

Rhubarb01 · 25/10/2021 21:20

What gorgeous views from their house. Wow that looks so beautiful.

Ilovelblue · 25/10/2021 23:04

Ashamed to say I fell asleep halfway through. Nothing to do with BA's acting, I assure you. There were quite a few of CJ's mannerisms in there, weren't there? It took me a while to realise that the church elder was Martin Shaw. I once sat at the next table to him in Cafe Rouge in Bath.

Don't know if any of you saw this story - a cross between Soldier Soldier and Our Girl, in a way. Tragic, but shows the importance of medics www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2021/10/26/british-soldier-killed-elephant-malawi-prevented-firing-warning/

Rhubarb01 · 26/10/2021 21:06

21:04 and we've had an "ASAP" - yep, I giggled to myself Grin

Rhubarb01 · 27/10/2021 18:23

Evening, looking forward to tonight's finale. It certainly ended on a cliffhanger last week.

eejit I read that story, and I have to agree. What a dreadful, tragic event, but it did seem almost like something out of one of these dramas. Apallling, when you consider it could have ended so differently.

I've watched two episodes of The Long Call now and, having read the discussion thread on here, I can see why people are describing it as dull. It certainly has that rather bleak feel which seems to accompany Shetland and Vera. As for BA, I think he's very self-contained in this role. I do feel the character's pain in confronting the past and trying to deal with an awkward relationship with his mother. However, I can also see why it's thought a bit dull. Still loving the scenery and all those familiar places, though. I'm sure I had a meal in that pub on the harbour once. I think it's the sort of role where the character could evolve over time and loosen up a bit, but in this first series, he's really got a lot more to deal with than just a murder.

eejittwo · 27/10/2021 18:50

Haven’t had a chance to watch any of The Long Call. It’s one of these weeks when I have things to do every single night. In fact, I think my first ‘free’ night is next Wednesday! I’ll try to catch up with it over the weekend.
Meanwhile, looking forward to tonight’s episode. Much as I like D’Art, Aramis staring down Rochefort is very alluring …

Magi84 · 27/10/2021 19:07

Very pleased eejit that you are starting to appreciate the Aramis allure

Rhubarb01 · 27/10/2021 21:00

Ready and in position for the finale of series 2 - episode 10 "Trial and Punishment"

Pressing play...now!

Rhubarb01 · 27/10/2021 21:01

Oh no, Constance is heading for the scaffold and the executioner is sharpening his knife. Poor Constance!!

Magi84 · 27/10/2021 21:01

Ominous music, a very lethal looking sword and Aramis chained to a wall. What a start

Ilovelblue · 27/10/2021 21:01

Hi all. I have to say that in the main, I would agree with the thread on The Long Call. It's not really gripped me and I keep forgetting who some of the characters are.
