The two-part drama explores Northern Ireland's strict abortion law and its impact on three different families between 2013 and 2019.

Looks very good and powerful. 9pm tonight.

I've watched both episodes - fantastic to shine a light on this situation but awful that those poor women (& many others) have gone through what they have.

I'm from Northern Ireland and absolutely love the place but it's so bloody backwards at times that it's shameful.

whatsthestory123 · 11/05/2021 01:59

yep watched both fantastic

MercyBooth · 11/05/2021 02:19

Ive watched both episodes on i player Heartbreaking
Absolutely barbaric policies.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 11/05/2021 05:31

shocking

SouthOfFrance · 11/05/2021 09:59

Watched the first episode last night, I thought it was good that it really captured the cultural differences with Northern Ireland with the strong religious beliefs of the characters, which burdened them with an additional sense of shame that they should not have had to carry.
The real shame comes from the doctor and police and legal professionals who lacked a basic sense of compassion and empathy, what amazing and brave women to take a stand against this treatment and campaign for a change in the law.
I'm going to watch the second episode tonight, will be interesting to find out the circumstances of the 3rd family.

MrsDThomas · 11/05/2021 10:17

Im watching the second one later. Its shocking. “It’s a sin” -religious claptrap.

So backwards.

SoupDragon · 11/05/2021 11:15

I agree, it was heartbreaking. I knew about the abortion laws there but this has really hammered home the way women suffered.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/05/2021 14:35

Omg. Just seen last nights

Was heart wrenching

To have to give birth knowing your baby will be dead or die shortly afterwards

And to help your daughter tho knowing was illegal

How can Northern Ireland still be in the dark ages 😢

I think if was my daughter, I would have gone to Uk with her and had an abortion

The doctor was wrong to tell the school /child protection

Tonight’s will hit home as well

cushioncovers · 11/05/2021 14:37

Going to watch this on catch up.

whatsthestory123 · 11/05/2021 15:48

I think we (NI women) can now avail of termination services over here until 9w6d, after that I imagine it's 'on the boat/plane' like the old days Sad

Hopefully I'm wrong though?

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/05/2021 19:41

If it’s only in why don’t the woman go to Southern Ireland rather the fly to Uk

OnslowsBaseballCap · 11/05/2021 20:16

Because in the south we would have to pay, we can still avail of the NHS in England which we should, rightly, be able to make use of in our own country.

Oh didn’t reliese that

This programme has made me Aware of things i should know

UpTheJunktion · 11/05/2021 22:02

“In Theory”.

How can some women in the UK have such a deficit of rights compared to others? (Rhetorical q)

Is there somewhere I can donate for women needing to travel, until this benighted situation is sorted out?

Justmuddlingalong · 11/05/2021 22:02

FFS. The written update at the end? I cannot fathom how little has really changed. It was and still is a bloody scandal.

UpTheJunktion · 11/05/2021 22:10

So the medical establishment have basically refused to enable the implementation of the law?

DelphiSwimsLate · 11/05/2021 22:23

UpTheJunktion - just posting this link in case it's helpful - www.bpas.org/abortion-care/considering-abortion/northern-ireland-funded-abortion-treatment/

It looks like the bpas will cover travel expenses for NI women who need to travel to England to access abortion. At the bottom of the page there's a link to donate.

I've just watched episode 2 and am genuinely lost for words.

userxx · 11/05/2021 22:26

Jesus, how depressing. How can that even be possible in this date and age.

UpTheJunktion · 11/05/2021 22:53

Thank you Delphi, I will donate.

Merriwicks · 12/05/2021 00:13

@Blondeshavemorefun yes many people do go to England but unfortunately it is expensive and many more people can't afford it. I would say that poor mother would have went if she could have afforded it. Many people are lucky to be able to afford food for the week, never mind a flight, accommodation etc on top. If you have watched secomd episode yet it does mention the cost of travelling. In addition to this people are very unlikely to discuss it with family or ask for financial help for travel for a termination as there is still a massive stigma attached to it here in NI.
It is infuriating we are still so far behind in womens rights

Merriwicks · 12/05/2021 00:16

@Blondeshavemorefun also in amswer to about going to the south. Although relaxed a little their termination laws are still very strict. You can't get a termination after 12 weeks. Most initial pregnancy scans are not until 12 weeks! So therefore fatal fetal abnormalities are not able to get terminations. Beggers belief really!

UpTheJunktion · 12/05/2021 06:20

When the Dr told Rosie they would manage her suicidal feelings with medication - “that would damage my baby”. - the whole situation is so without logic, sense, it showed up the intellectual gaps in the status quo.

Whatwouldscullydo · 12/05/2021 06:32

What's the support system in Ireland like does anyone know?

If they expect all these woken to continue pregnancies even with severely disabled babies , is there a benefit system? Dla? Schools that can take them etc?
