Can anyone suggest anything similar?
Me and DD 9 have almost finished watching it together and we need something new for when it's over. Doesn't matter if it's old, just needs to be good. Obviously I'm not going to watch Outlander or similar with her Grin

Fyredraca · 07/05/2021 14:07

We've watched pp but Downton is a good idea, thank you

Leonardo has just come out on Prime and is pretty good!

Fyredraca · 07/05/2021 14:41

Ooh more Aidan, that does sound good! Thank you

Bridgerton except for i think episode 5 or 6 which is just sex.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 07/05/2021 14:50

The new All Creatures Great and Small is lovely.

Fyredraca · 07/05/2021 15:20

I watched a bit of Bridgerton but it didn't really pull me in. Some fantastic actors in it and I like the modern vibe but I just didn't feel compelled to carry on with it.
All Creatures sounds good. Watched one of the old ones the other night. Sad how dated it is cos I loved it so much back in the day!

Are you looking for historical drama or just easy going drama?

If the former you could also look at Cranford, Lark Rise to Candleford and Middlemarch.

If easy going, Pie in the Sky and Monarch of the Glen are 90s/early 00s drama and quite entertaining and nothing horrible.

poppycat10 · 07/05/2021 15:50

Also Lilies - set in 20s Liverpool.

Fyredraca · 07/05/2021 16:11

Anything really, just something with drama that's family friendlyish. Monarch of the Glen is a good one, thank you!
The sort of thing they show on a Sunday night.
Thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming.

The Leonardo thing has nudity etc.

What about a Call the Midwife sort of thing? Or the detective series, Vera etc?

Fyredraca · 07/05/2021 22:11

Detective series is a great idea and there's plenty to choose from. Great idea

My kids loved watching When Calls The Heart with me. All completely appropriate. On Netflix. It's cheesy but good.

LagneyandCasey · 07/05/2021 23:10

My dc all loved Dickensian which was on TV a few years ago. I'm sure you could find it somewhere.

The love Call the Midwife too.

stumbledin · 07/05/2021 23:48

I think Vera has some quite adult themes and can be a bit depressing so not sure about a 9 year old.

I recently watched the Suspicions of Mr Whicher which is a victorian detective series, with some great sets and costumes. But maybe some of the themes are a bit adult - but on the other hand Poldark has rape, and men sucking women's toes, so this might seem a bit tame!

Another one is discovery of Witches which has magic and time shift like Outlander. I haven't watched all the series so not sure, but the first one was quite american pie, ie not too disturbing.

stumbledin · 07/05/2021 23:51

Just thought of Home Fires. Cant remember it that well, but a strong female cast, bit of history (about women taking on responsibilities while husbands fighting etc..)

Foyles War which I always think of as sunday evening tv.

Justajot · 07/05/2021 23:59

Anne with an E, Enola Holmes. Both on Netflix.

TaraR2020 · 08/05/2021 00:23

Anne with an E gets quite dark at times, I really wouldn't recommend it for 9yo!

To refresh it for modern audiences it focuses on quite adult themes at times- the abuse Anne experienced before adoption for example, and gives her knowledge of sex that was considered inappropriate in the story.

(Was v good tho!)

Lurleene · 08/05/2021 00:26

The Durrells?

Justajot · 08/05/2021 11:05

My DD was 9 when she watched Anne with an E, and thoroughly enjoyed it. But it wouldn't suit all of her friends - it must depend on the child.

Rhannion · 08/05/2021 22:24

Home Fires is absolutely brilliant but ITV cancelled it after 3 series which was sooo stupid as it had a great cast and storyline. ( the writer carries on the story in book form)
Cranford is wonderful again a brilliant cast , with strong female characters.

Coffeeandcake36 · 08/05/2021 22:54

Me and dd sometimes watch a Catherine Cookson a Sunday. Can anyone tell me where I can watch Homefires, Cranford, Lark Rise to Candleford. Oh and Lillies.

Standrewsschool · 08/05/2021 23:10
