Things like Poldark?

Can anyone suggest anything similar?
Me and DD 9 have almost finished watching it together and we need something new for when it's over. Doesn't matter if it's old, just needs to be good. Obviously I'm not going to watch Outlander or similar with her Grin

If you can get hold of a copy of the 2000 drama Lorna Doone, that’s VERY Poldarky and quite “clean” apart from some violence.

All the Austen dramas...the Kate Winslet/Emma Thompson Sense and Sensibility especially. Jane Eyre, the one with a young Anna Paquin in it. I was about 9 when I saw it. North and South is probably THE best period drama I’ve seen. The 1990s Secret Garden is brilliant. Anne with an E for sure (I definitely don’t think it’s too dark for a 9 year old), When Calls The Heart is lovely as a pp said, it’s a bit like a modern day Little House on The Prairie. The film of A Little Princess from the 90s is good, and the Railway Children, Cider with Rosie, Pollyanna, Swallows and Amazons (I’ve only seen the new ones), Five Children and It etc all good “kids” TV dramas from the 90s and 00s. A lot of them are available on ITV on demand etc. I grew up watching the Catherine Cookson dramas. They went on forever but I did enjoy them at the time.

Also, very different but I LOVED the Darling Buds of May growing up. All Creatures Great and Small isn’t dissimilar.

I love Poldark.

Some other shows/movies 've also enjoyed:

Far from the Madding Crowd w/Carey Mulligan - definitely Poldark-esque
The Potato Peel Pie Society (close to that anyway, delightful film with lily james)
Desperate Romantics (also Aidan Turner)
Mayor of Casterbridge
Another yes for The Durrells
The TV version of pride and prejudice with Colin Firth
Downton Abbey and Upstairs Downstairs

North and South, US version with Patrick Swayse and also the UK version

When I was that age I loved The House of Elliott, though not quite the same production values!

I'd second A little Princess/ Secret Garden.
Austen, Eliot, Dickens adaptations.
Catherine Cookson can have some quite difficult scenes so suggest you look up the synopsis online before watching.

Would she enjoy ITV's Victoria?

PlanDeRaccordement · 09/05/2021 23:03

Vanity Fair
Gentleman Jack
Irregulars

For when she is teenager, Harlots. 9 is too young now.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 11/05/2021 07:49

Does she like horses. Heartland on Netflix is quite good.

For historical stuff all the Catherine cookson are worth a watch but the best ones are The girl, The dwelling place, The rag Nymph and A Dinner of Herbs.

Definitely watch downton abbey too

Thanks some great suggestions! I definitely want to relive the first series of Victoria. Mmmm Lord M

Has anyone mentioned Lorna Doone? I think there are at least 2 different series made from this book.

One was a bit more scary, another more true love conquers all.

Probably closest to Poldark!

And wasn't there a fairly recent adaptation of Jamaica Inn - probably best known for the most muffled dialogue ever. Maybe an earlier version would be easier to watch.

And something totally different:

There is a really lovely film about a young girl and her father who helps some young geese learn to fly and migrate south. A real story and a real tear jerker. Just mentioned as it might come up as an afternoon film on a weekend or something.

SapatSea · 13/05/2021 12:18

If you don't mind dramas made a while ago then:

Middlemarch - Rufus Sewell
North and South- Richard Armitage
Vanity Fair - there was a recent ITV one, a changed story Reese Witherspoon film and a much better Andrew Davies adaptation with Natasha Little as Becky Sharpe (1998).
Bleak House - Gillian Anderson, Carey Mulligan
David Copperfield - young Daniel Radcliffe

My dd's loved all of these.

Going way back : Flambards is also good. Jane Eyre with Timothy Dalton.

I mentioned the 2000 adaptation of Lorna Doone just about 6 posts above. It wasn’t that scary so guessing it’s the second sort.

The film about the geese is Fly Away Home with a young Anna Paquin in it. Her Jane Eyre is also good.

Sorry gullible - I had this late night thought and just started typing.

Fyredraca · 13/05/2021 15:11

Ooh yes, lots more good suggestions. Thanks so much!
More Rufus Sewell is especially good Grin

The queens gambit on Netflix.

It's set in the 1970s I think but really modern. About an orphan girl who wants to become the best chess player in the world. It's a limited series, I'm 3 episodes in and hooked.

There was one about a shop called The Paradise. Really lovely. Also A place to call home .
