Anyone watching? I'm loving it so far!

Me - I had not heard about it and it's fascinating. There is some irony in the mouse brows of Georgian times being laughed at today.

adrianmolesmole · 20/04/2021 21:55

yeah the mouse brows! Wonder if they'll catch on todayGrin

I'm fascinated that they knew that lead makeup was dangerous in Georgian times but they did it anyway. I thought it was discovered much, much later than that.

Sorry, gave up twenty minutes in, very short on facts and dead slow. Makes you realise how good Lucy Worsley is!

dudsville · 20/04/2021 22:00

Lucy Worsley is amazing!

dudsville · 20/04/2021 22:00

(Missed point of thread)

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 20/04/2021 22:06

I didn't think either of those things murb. Loved the recreation of a high Georgian look. It was also really interesting to learn that Georgiana had such a highly paid hairdresser.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 20/04/2021 22:07

I really liked the programme and the presenter.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 20/04/2021 22:15

Slowing you how to recreate some of the products was a master stroke.

ChampagneCommunist · 20/04/2021 22:20

Really enjoyed it. Can't get on with Lucy Worsley, so I must be the target audience!

3CCC · 20/04/2021 23:31

I really liked it!

It was nice easy watch after a one day but felt like you learnt something

Those mouse brows! Think she was genuinely impressed by the burnt clove idea.

Think they should do a show similar but on the hair.

IntermittentParps · 21/04/2021 11:44

Haven't watched it yet but am looking forward to it. So white lead make-up was around for a long time then? I always associate it with Elizabeth I.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 21/04/2021 14:20

I hope one of the programmes covers Hollywood's influence on make-up. Max Factor invented foundation for use on actors and lots of other products we know and recognise today stem from that time.

JaneJeffer · 23/04/2021 01:19

I really enjoyed it. The clove trick was very clever.

3CCC · 27/04/2021 22:20

Did anyone else watch this evening's episode?

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 27/04/2021 22:24

Yes, I did. There were some bloody ugly hairstyles in Victorian times! I quite fancy making my own cold cream.

whitershadeofpale · 27/04/2021 22:56

I did. I found the revelations about women being able to be forcibly examined rather terrifying.

3CCC · 27/04/2021 23:37

That seemed really grim & invasive

Victorian men seemed to want the perfect woman with there perfect corseted bodies and the perfect skin. Even though that was practically unattainable. And if you did try to look perfect and use makeup you were seen as a prostitute.

BunnyRuddington · 28/04/2021 07:49

Did anyone else watch this evening's episode.

Yes I watched it too. So many parallels with how women are treated in today's society.

Buggerthebotox · 28/04/2021 07:55

I loved last week's. Rather predictable to use the Duchess of Devonshire and Marie Antoinette as typical Georgian women but hey ho.

Not seen the Victorian one yet.

There's a historian called Amber Butchart who does this kind of thing really well. Worth a watch (try YouTube).

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 28/04/2021 09:44

They were used as examples of the most fashionable and talked about Georgian women in fairness, rather than as typical Georgian women.

Next week looks really interesting - the 20s is when make-up was really brought to the masses from Hollywood.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 28/04/2021 09:45

I forgot: I had no idea that mascara came from beard dye until last night!

TaraR2020 · 28/04/2021 23:57

Really enjoying it!

Lucy's stuff is good but I confess to having boycotted it her since I met her...you know what they say about meeting ppl you admire and all :/

Spill?!
TaraR2020 · 29/04/2021 00:22

Arrogant and dismissive in person, although to the Oxbridge students there she was charm personified Hmm

FindBetty · 29/04/2021 11:20

I haven't watched the Victorian one yet but enjoyed the Georgian episode - although it would have been interesting to see that make-up applied to a slightly more average woman in her twenties, to give a more realistic idea of how transformative a burned clove could be.
