Hope no one minds me starting a new thread as 4 was filled on one episode.

Ted has been the police so long that they won't necessarily have his DNA on file from him joining. He was arrested and interviewed last series so his DNA may be on the nominal database from then.

@IstandwithJackieWeaver

Well it's not like Agatha Christie where everyone is gathered together for the denouement, that's for sure, and actually it's pretty life-like to not have everything answered. We can only guess at people's motivation for lots of things.
Yeah, but not to the extent that people are confused by what they've seen - eg the last episode of series 5. Unless I've lost faith too soon and all will be clear soon.

I don't mind loose ends particularly - but I do like things to have some internal logic.

MysteriousAffairAtStyles · 14/04/2021 17:50

Something I’ve been wondering: so, AC-12 are the main focus of the narrative in LoD.

We’ve had tangential views/mentions of AC-3 & AC-9, though I’m still not entirely sure precisely area(s) they investigate.

But what about ACs 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 & 11? Are there any numbered higher than 12?

Why do we never hear about them? Do they even exist? Why does the work of the various AC units only rarely collide? How corrupt can one police force be that they need a minimum of 12 units keeping tabs on them? How many OCGs are recruiting bent coppers across the entire force?

I’m with Andrea Wise on the need to downsize and amalgamate. Anti-corruption seems like a very bloated beast. Confused

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 14/04/2021 17:57

I can't believe how seriously you are all taking it. 😁

Dailyhandtowelwash · 14/04/2021 18:00

Police units are often randomly numbered - usually because the other units used to exist but now don't, and no one has ever changed them. Eg the Met used to have some SO (Special Operations) units covering a few numbers - now reorganised I think.

If I were DCC Wise and PCC Sindwhani, I'd be looking to carry out a zero-based budget review across the board. I'd also be questioning structures as units should be headed up by someone of the same grade across the board - usually a Chief Superintendent. Hastings is oddly junior for his command.

But not quite as seriously as that poster a couple of years back who thought it was real. Does anyone else remember that? One of my most favourite things on MN ever! Grin

Here we go, this is the thread:

To be fair I started watching it because I read that the current series (murdered journalist) was loosely based on Jill Dando/Barry George.

@Gladimnotcampinginthisweather

But you were no doubt aware that it was a fictionalised drama that drew inspiration from the Jill Dando murder, rather than a dramatisation of actual events?
GrandmasNightgown · 14/04/2021 18:23

I'm beginning to think the mistake in the first episode was just that, a mistake.

What was important was how it was covered up, and how that was pulled off even with one of the team (Steve) breaking ranks and telling it how it happened. So how and why did Osbourne get that level of protection?

It wasn't because, as Vella thought, there was institutionalised racism (didnt matter that they shot the wrong man, just because he was the same colour as the target) but because someone, Osbourne presumably, must not be put in the (metaphorical) firing line. Why? Is he the senior corrupt officer, or just someone who knows so much he became untouchable - what might he know, and is it a child abuse ring at high levels of the establishment? OCG involved, but the real story being the paedophile abusers

That is priceless! When Ryan was going to chop off Steve’s fingers, was she wondering why the camera operator didn’t intervene?

AwkwardArnottDentonFumble · 14/04/2021 18:36

Oh god styles I’d forgotten about that thread! :o

AwkwardArnottDentonFumble · 14/04/2021 18:39

Come to think of it Jed probably had to be really careful with names of dodgy people - especially the List - and find names that didn’t match any notable people, in case some vigilantes thought it was a documentary 😬😂

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 14/04/2021 18:39

MysteriousAffairAtStyles I did say loosely based.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 14/04/2021 18:41

They also mentioned Jimmy Saville by name and a raid on the home of an elderly pop star so it touches on real life now and again.

storminabuttercup · 14/04/2021 18:46

I did float the ridiculous idea in the last thread that the DNA matched Jimmy Saville but I was quite rightly ignored

UrgentExit · 14/04/2021 18:51

In my imagination I think there's AC-3, 6, 9 and 12, That would work neatly. So far I think we've discovered they cover professional standards and anti corruption plus witness protection and safe houses etc.

The instruction about amalgamating and downsizing came from Chief Constable Osborne, he wrote to DCC Wise. I think that's o the list of Easter Egg clues. She then got to break the news to Ted.

CheekyWeeShite · 14/04/2021 19:00

😂

I just text my husband the link to that LoD is real thread and he then sent me this (SinkGirl is my usual username).

Glad that we share the same sense of humour 😂

Maybe they'll invent an ageing rock star, who has perhaps been arrested a few times for dope (so a nominal) who has been dogged by rumours of being a serial sexual abuser (stage name something like Sammy Sequin?)

Or we could fall down the truly irrelevant rabbithole of Ian Watkins, H, Steps and his namesake Lostprophets

CheekyWeeShite · 14/04/2021 19:07

You mean Ian Watkins from Lostprophets and his namesake H from Steps?

Poor H!

Wait... H! It’s all coming together 😬

NoWordForFluffy · 14/04/2021 19:11

Well, I never knew that was H's real name. Unfortunate for him.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 14/04/2021 19:21

No! Oh dear. He is an annoying personage but I wouldn’t wish that coincidence on my worst enemy.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 14/04/2021 19:31

It’s not a copper though from what Steve said. He specifically said it was a nominal. So it’s a criminal who has not been in the police
But if it was before Jo joined the police, which was 1999, do we, the viewer, even know of any characters that were criminals before that time? Of course, it could be someone we’ve never encountered as viewers, but I’d never forgive them if they did that. So, maybe he meant if they did speculative DNA running at the time, they’d have known she was related to someone in the police. But now that person is on the nominal database because they have since committed a crime. So could be any number of Bent Coppers. But also, going on their fictional DOBs it’d have to be a sibling or some such because none of them are old enough to realistically be a parent of Jo, born in 1979, surely?
Or she’s related to Jimmy Savile. Grin

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 14/04/2021 19:35

But what about ACs 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 & 11? Are there any numbered higher than 12?
Nah, they go up in threes. AC-3, AC-9 and obvs AC-12 no problem. No one knows what the Jeff AC-6 do yet though. Maybe they’re in charge of police convoys. In which case they’ve probably already been disbanded with their LOD track record.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 14/04/2021 19:36

The photo looked very much like a woman (yes we sis keep rewinding and freeze framing it). Her mum? Ties in with the photo she threw her glass at (she must still be picking splinters of glass out of her feet). Maybe.
