Seaspiracy, anyone watched it? I am disgusted and shocked.

I will never ever eat fish again. The plastic, the deaths, the lies and backhanders, the slave trade. I am gobsmacked. The little blue tick of “sustainable fishing” means absolutely fuck all and our seas are being decimated beyond any scale that we are led to believe.

There's a meme going about on how and why it wasn't called ConspiraSEA and I can't get past that.

Sorry nothing helpful to add. I do plan on watching it.

LarsErickssong · 31/03/2021 21:50

Not watched it yet but going to over the weekend, I've seen the stat about the huge oil spill actually being GOOD for the environment which is shocking Shock. I only really eat tuna and the occasional fish finger/chippy fish so if I feel the same as you OP I won't actually miss it that much.

BlueShrew · 31/03/2021 21:53

Yes, horrifying. I imagine it was called Seaspiracy to link it to the original Cowspiracy. Both worth a watch for anyone who hasn't already.

HappyRaven · 31/03/2021 22:04

I will watch it tomorrow. I found out today that a lot of fish and chip shops sell an endangered shark but relable it as rock salmon. I am really starting to feel like there is no hope for our planet.

AnneLovesGilbert · 31/03/2021 22:12

The fewer people eating fish and meat the better for us and the planet.

JustDanceAddict · 31/03/2021 22:24

The only fish I’d really miss is smoked salmon! I haven’t seen it though.

K imagine it's Sea's-Piracy - robbing the seas.

I haven't watched it because I know what is involved and I know I'll be too upset.

Catslovepies · 01/04/2021 21:28

I haven't watched it (or Cowspiracy) but I'm vegan already. From what I've heard about the programme things are even worse than I thought they were when I went vegan originally.

cushioncovers · 02/04/2021 08:40

Yes I've seen it it's shocking. The fact that the plastic charity (forget their name) wouldn't criticise the fishing industry spoke volumes and was an embarrassment to watch.

Frazzled2207 · 02/04/2021 08:44

I will watch it but I’m worried tbh- we’re a very eco-conscious family, dh and ds are vegetarian, I am virtually pescatarian but a nice occasional piece of fish is one of my guilty pleasures and I don’t have many tbh.

GoLightlyontheEarth · 02/04/2021 08:51

I was disgusted and horrified too. I am not going to eat fish any longer as a result and certainly not tuna or salmon. Farmed fish are kept in appalling conditions and are a breeding ground for disease. Animals kept in unnatural conditions and fed crap are another pandemic waiting to happen apart from anything else.
The killing of whales and dolphins just upsets me so much , it’s a deeply visceral response.
So profoundly depressing that profit and greed as usual are used as excuses to rape the Earth. How anyone with a soul can kill and maim animals like this, and treat them as a mass commodity is beyond me.
We all need to stand up and be counted. Don’t eat fish, in particular tuna and salmon.
I have been following the series on Cornish fishing communities with interest, but become Increasingly disturbed by the way living animals are found by sonar and just hauled out in huge numbers. The trawlers are a whole other horrifying story. I’m surprised we have any fish sticks left.

Stocks

fairydustandpixies · 02/04/2021 09:10

I watched it yesterday. Am absolutely horrified. I'm another one who will never eat fish again.

Missteebeee · 04/04/2021 21:23

It made me cry

It’s so horrific. We are killing the planet

NahahaNa · 04/04/2021 21:34

I won't be able to make myself watch it as going through a tough time right now but can someone factually summarise the key points please?
Is there any seafood that is more ethical to eat?

GoLightlyontheEarth · 04/04/2021 22:04

You need to watch it.

Wallabyone · 04/04/2021 22:07

I watched it last night and it was certainly thought-provoking. I couldn't believe the awful cover-ups and avoidance of questions, and how the fishing industry is basically killing the sea. It's disgusting that they are focusing on plastic bags and straws when the problem is so much bigger than that, and yet fishing is so politicised, no one can change the situation. Also, I didn't realise how important the ocean is for carbon absorption; this is a huge problem that needs addressing.

Lavera9 · 04/04/2021 22:16

Yes, and also never eating fish again. I think it was super important viewing! And I hope it gets a lot of viewers.

Lavanderrose · 04/04/2021 22:19

Haven’t watched it yet but so many people saying the same after watching it, that they’ll never eat fish again.

Wallabyone · 04/04/2021 22:24

How many people would have to stop eating fish for it to start having an impact? It seems so hopeless Sad

PiIsAReallyLongNumber · 04/04/2021 22:26

I watched this today.
The environmental concerns regarding apex species and the overall health of seas/oceans and the knock on effect for the planet as a whole is something I already understood whereas the rest, the deaths, cover ups, links to slavery, corruption and the fact that it's a completely unregulated industry (despite claims to the contrary) has shocked me.

I'm also another that won't eat fish again.

Noshowlomo · 04/04/2021 22:29

Watch Cowspiracy as well

PiIsAReallyLongNumber · 04/04/2021 22:32

@noshowlomo, I definitely will. I'd never heard of it before this.

I just need to find it.

Mybobowler · 04/04/2021 22:35

I watched it and while I totally support the premise, I thought the journey from "plastic pollution is bad" to "so you need to be a vegan" was a bit of an own goal. Changing our behaviour - particularly behaviour as deeply entrenched and culturally significant as what we eat - won't be achieved by making people feel impotent. The film should have done more to make its audience feel informed and empowered. This documentary just made me feel depressed and guilty.

ruddynorah · 04/04/2021 22:48

Not sure what you mean by own goal. The message was empowering. By not eating fish you can make a difference. And a real difference at that. Not just refusing plastic straws to save the fish which was always a literal drop in the ocean. Like wuse Cowspiracy explains why turning the tap off when you brush your teeth is a mere drop compared with eating a burger.
