oliveoil · 07/11/2007 10:05

onlyjoking9329 · 07/11/2007 10:11

i have a meeting today with my childrens SN school to talk about how to talk to my three about there Dad and to help prepare them for his death.

pud1 · 07/11/2007 10:26

i am going to watch it. i kniw it will be painful as i lost my sil in feb to cancer. she left behing a 13 year old dd and i promised her that i would be there for her daughter.
although we did not contact winstons wish my neice and i did look at the web site and she found it really useful. there was forums like mn and she did find comfort in knowing she was not alone.
tbh my sil didnt tell her dd that she was dying, she knew she was ill but thought she would get better, in the end it happened really fast. looking back i think that it would have been better to tell her the truth. it still suprises me how well kids handle these things

I will be watching as my sister would have loved to have the time to do this for her children. She died of liver cancer when her children were 6 and 4. She died 10 days after she was diagnosed and only 30 days after the onset of any symptoms.

She wasn't able to leave anything like a mummy diary for them and I know my niece and nephew (16 and 13 years old now) would have loved this.

They love it when we talk about her and tell them stories from when she was little. My niece in particular would love to be able to read a diary or watch a video with her mother's advice on it. It seems to me that she in particular misses her mother more and more as she gets older. This to me seems one of the worst things about losing a parent young.

When we lose someone as an adult most bereavements get easier to bear as time passes for children, I'd say that almost the opposite is true. Each milestone reached is done so with the knowledge that a parent might have helped or been there for them.

In the end though life happens and my niece and nephew have a good life with lots of people around them who love them.
