Moving to a new house should have been a dream come true for Alice (keesley hawks) and Harry (Jason Merrells) and their daughter Charlotte

But turns into a nightmare when Alice finds Harry at the bottom of the stairs dead

And turns out harry has secrets ........

It’s not great. No spoilers, but I am fast forwarding through the rest of the episodes. Interested to see what the story is, but first episode quite poor

It felt really clunky. I laughed when Keeley Hawes gave her date of birth as 1980.

Hoping it's just first-episode clunkiness as it looks like a good cast and the story has potential.

I enjoyed it
Hated the stairs.

On Grand Designs I've seen them forced into putting up bannisters before. Often they opt for glass and all I can think about is the fingerprints.

@thenightsky

I thought the bill from the fertility clinic that Charlotte found was dated 2000, so would maybe relate to her (she looked about 19 years old)

February 2020. I just played it back :)

@JaneJeffer

What was Joanna Lumley up to upstairs? She looked very flushed! The dad (NH) also seems oblivious to everything. Maybe he's in on it too?

I assumed they’d been upstairs having some, erm, afternoon delight - not expecting their 40 year old daughter to let her self in. The they crept downstairs, Joanna Lumley came in to the kitchen whilst Nigel Havers pretended he’d been out with the dog.

Yes, but she’s only four years older than that though.

As Judas says, Keeley Hawes was born in 1976 so it's not that far fetched Hmm

I couldn't sit in front of those large windows at night, it would freak me out. I'd be expecting to look up and see a face pressed against it. Especially after seeing someone had been in it the night before.

I'm glad it was billed as having sone comedy as I laughed a lot and didn't expect to from the trailers. I'm going to have to have a binge watch tomorrow evening.

Just finished this first episode and I think I am hooked enough to watch the next one. Agree though on some of the comedy parts of the scripts which are irritating. This looks like one of those stories with so many twists and unexpected (and unrealistic) sub plots but i look forward to next week's offering. I tend not to persevere with these short series if not fully engrossed so will give it another go.
Joanna Lumley always just plays Joanna Lumley in most of what she does (probably that voice she can not alter) with the exception of Patsy in ABFAB!

I'm finding it a hard watch because it's really relatable. My DH died from cancer not a sudden death, but the things like wondering what to wear, and the thing about the milk - they are ways of distracting yourself from the enormity of being a widow. The humour isn't jarring to me either because I take the piss out of my situation all the time as a way of coping with it. I think it's very well written and would be surprised if there wasn't someone with experience of being widowed in the writing team.

The pp that found the mention of finding someone else implausible - it happened to me. Not the next day, admittedly, but a few weeks after he died, a close friend said that I was still young enough to remarry and start again.

Oh and I hated that house. Far too cold and stark for my taste. A "smart house" ? They are for lazy buggers aren't they? Smile

Ah right @Judashascomeintosomemoney Grin

I think JL telling her daughter she'd meet someone else was very Patsy!

The morgue scenes were amusing and ruthlessly obviously flouting rules of real life. Like the police were doing

I'm not a widow but can relate to the black humour etc and the enormity of a situation like this.

I dont know how pp can say she isnt acting heartbroken, I thought she was the epitome of heart broken, bewildered, lost, angry, tearful, sad just about every emotion. Grieving someone you love especially in the first shock filled days isn't just crying constantly, if crying even happens at all. The bit she said I don't have friends, Harry was enough was very sad i thought as she obviously about to realise that maybe he didn't feel the same....

I'm sticking with it there's enough to hook me in. Whilst I would never have a smart house myself, I can well believe if my dh was desperate or we bought one with it in place for one I'd go with it but wouldn't have a clue how to sort the apps and wouldn't take much notice or any interest of it all until i had to learn it to live there!!

I’m never keen on comedy drama , but I think I shall give this another episode at least . Keely Hawes although beautiful looks older than 44!

@Judashascomeintosomemoney :
That wasn't how I saw JL's breathless entrance.

I thought afternoon delight was happening, but with someone other than Nigel Havers.

The way she sniped at him when he walked in saying "that wasn't a very long walk", or words to that effect.

Then he made some comment about just having seen George/Arthur/Geoff, or some such, and that Margaret was doing better.

I wondered if the aforementioned chap had just legged it from NH's bedroom.?

I should say, in my defence, I have previous form for not seeing and hearing what is actually happening.😉

Report
Wingedharpy · 18/01/2021 02:42

I also wondered if she didn't turn over CCTV to police as she knows, or suspects, who those legs belong to and she is playing her cards close to her chest, for now.

@Wingedharpy that's how I interpreted it too.

It's all a bit odd ! I thought to start with that some of them were making strangely inappropriate comments until it clicked that it was dark humour.

So I warmed to it in the end but the endless trailers beforehand had shown it as a straightforward drama .

The door had a camera on too, so would you not look at footage and entry info there?
