I've been sucked in, watching them on Sky Arts.
As a child I found them terrifying. I went with my parents to collect my grandad. My sister and brother stayed with my other grandparents. I was 10.
On the way back we skidded on black ice, and the car rolled over and over. Luckily the car was really strong (old car it was a Ghia something, can't remember), so we were able to drive home.
We got back to my grandparents, my nan gave me my first ever alcoholic drink (Advocaat), to settle my nerves.
Tales of the Unexpected was on. It was one about a man who killed his wife and cut up her body in the bath. It terrified me, I 'remember' seeing the blood, it was very, very graphic and scared me for a long time.
I watched part of this recently and the bath scene was very tame. There was no blood! Somehow my young mind had created the graphic scenes of skin, muscle, blood and bone I'd remembered.
The theme tune sent me into a cold sweat.
Now I can appreciate the nuances, the twists and the sheer brilliance of it and it has become my favourite viewing pleasure.
