I watched tis on BBC catch up last night - it was lovely! Sad, but lovely.

Anyone else seen it?

I enjoyed it but a lot was cut out of the book. If you don’t mind the sadness in the book, I really recommend it. It covers the real tragedy of being occupied.

Rhubarb01 · 02/01/2021 13:28

Yes, I've seen it a couple of times. I appreciated it more on second viewing, although I was slightly distracted by Clovelly in Devon standing in for Guernsey, but an enjoyable film. Lucky lady having two such charming suitors!

Rhubarb01 · 02/01/2021 13:31

'Enemy at the Door' an old 70's TV drama about the occupation of Guernsey (I think) was pretty good, although of its time (long scenes with lots of conversation and mostly studio based). I think it ran to a couple of series and probably portrayed the occupation more accurately.

Theimpossiblegirl · 02/01/2021 13:34

I loved the book and the film.
Underrated in my opinion.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 02/01/2021 15:19

Loved the film. Don’t particularly want to read the book. Nice to see Bude as the setting for the beach scenes.

Always wanted to visit Guernsey.

MichelleofzeResistance · 02/01/2021 15:21

Loved it, although was sad to find it was Devon and not Guernsey as you say!

Definitely now wanting to go and see the places where it was filmed, and to read the book.

Thank you - I'd wondered whether to get hold of a copy. Even in the film I was shocked that the Germans had used slave labour to build the beachside defences. I've read a lot about WWII but hadn't been aware of this before.

I saw it a couple of months ago and enjoyed it.

bruffin · 02/01/2021 16:00

I loved the film, though need to see it again as i saw it on a log haul flight in the middle of the night
There was an interesting programme on recently called Tony Robinson Walking through History . One of the episodes covered the German Occupation of Guernsey. Its well worth watching

reprehensibleme · 02/01/2021 16:01

Definitely read the book - lots more in it. There was a series called Island at War a few years ago about the occupation - it was OK, but there should have been a second series which was never made, so it didn't come to a proper conclusion. Worth a look for anyone interested in the occupation of the Channel Islands.

wildthingsinthenight · 02/01/2021 16:02

Yes I loved the book and the film!

TroysMammy · 02/01/2021 16:03

I've got the book which I read years ago. I watched it the other day and enjoyed it. I may re-read the book again one day.

Morgan · 02/01/2021 16:04

You should visit Guernsey when you can - I live here - it’s prettier than Devon 😉 and lots of occupation history to see.

Now I'm torn . . . Want to see the programme but I can't stand TR - he's the most obnoxious little tw*t! I can tolerate him in Blackadder, but that's as far as it goes.

I'll just have to pretend it's Baldrick narrating.

I remember that program! Was so disappointed that there was never a second series.
bruffin · 02/01/2021 16:42

I havnt got over TR misprouncing my home town all the way through an episode of TimeTeam they made here @SchadenfreudePersonified, still the Walking Through History Guernsey episode is worth watching

User478 · 02/01/2021 16:51

The book is good (although I had it as an audio book and misheard Dawsey as Dulcie so thought it was much more controversial than it was!)

DobbyTheHouseElk · 02/01/2021 17:05

Bude is in Cornwall, the beach scenes.
Clovelly is Devon, the harbour scenes.

FuzzyPuffling · 02/01/2021 17:11

I loved the book.

And almost went to audition as an extra for the film, but chickened out at the last moment. Some of it was filmed on my local beaches!

FuzzyPuffling · 02/01/2021 17:13

And thanks for that Dobby...we get so fed up with "but Bude's in Devon, isn't it?".

Sunshinedrops85 · 02/01/2021 17:15

I loved personally but saw it before. It made me want to move!

This quote made me cry "It's hard to lose a friend when you haven't got many".

DobbyTheHouseElk · 02/01/2021 17:25

DH is from Bude, born and bred. MIL lives there still. I get it. Even people from Cornwall think it’s North Devon.

DH was half watching it and then shouted out, “that’s crooklets!”
FuzzyPuffling · 02/01/2021 20:22

Hurrah for Crooklets! (Although I was at Widdy today)
Bude is my nearest "civilisation".

DobbyTheHouseElk · 02/01/2021 20:51

DH only goes to crooklets or widemouth. Never summerleaze. That’s for emmets apparently.

Last time we saw MIL in October briefly, we drove past Widemouth as we were coming from south cornwall. The waves were really wild.
